Just call it a mistrial already. This is a disaster.

Actually, I am good with the trial continuing. A mistrial would mean these folks would have to sit through it all over again. Let’s get it over with.

DB can’t decide if the driver was not him, or it was him and he was honking. He can’t decide if he’s a sovereign citizen where the government has no jurisdiction over him, or a self-taught attorney able to act within the confines of the legal system. He’s manipulating the courtroom. I feel certain that his futile tactics are evident to the jury.

He is an enigma - smart, but devoid of empathy or conscience. Evil genius.

He’s dangerous.

As @BeckyF said above, I am looking forward to a verdict of “guilty of all charges.“

At least four mental health professionals have determined that he is competent to stand trial. Four!

The appeal should be interesting. Start with, incompetent representation...slam dunk. Although, he has the right to defend himself.

I am actually interested in his mental health history, it seems like he had been on psychotropic medication, but stopped taking his meds? I wonder why. Could he not afford them any longer? Lack of health insurance? Those would be some strong and provocative arguments for the insanity defense, that he has shut down. Sort of glad about that.

Regarding his mental health treatment, DB’s mother had this to say. More at the article link.

Darrell did not come from a bad family like many people have said. He came from a loving christian family and is the grandson of ministers. Darrell has suffered from mental health issues since he was very young. In those years he received counseling and was on medication. When he became an adult a decision was made that he no longer suffered from a mental illness. That decision left him with no insurance or financial means to pay for medication and when determind necessary counseling. Mental illness is not cheap to treat but what's more important dollars spent on treatment and recouses or lives lost.

Instead of offering help and resources to combat the problem a jail cell was given. Over and over again. When mental illness is not properly treated the person becomes sicker and sicker. It doesn't go away once a person becomes an adult.

Based on the overview his mother provided, it might be a situation where it was discovered that he was not suffering from "traditional" mental illness, but a personality disorder, which is a whole different thing. IMO

Yeah as usual mom is making shameless excuses. He is not mentally ill, ma’am! Being anti-social and a sociopath is not mental illness in my book. It’s a character deficit.

The sound of the band playing before these poor people are hit sounds like something from a horror movie. I can't believe this jerk is making the victim relive this nightmare.

He's such a schmuck. That's all I have as I watch this.

He clearly has no strategy to his defense/questioning. He seems to resent the victims. He's still combative despite his "apology" yesterday.

The more I watch him the more disturbed I become by him. I don’t care about how he fares, since he has a right to self-represent. As the saying goes “He who represents himself has a fool for a client.”

But why are the victims being put through this sham? What about their rights?

Additionally, under the Crime Victims' Rights Act (CVRA), 18 U.S.C. § 3771, victims have the following rights:

  • The right to be reasonably protected from the accused

Major eye rolls over his "emotions"

These poor witnesses! I imagine they are physically exhausted after they get done with the cross examination. Just guessing at the inner strength it takes to maintain composure while being grilled by the man you believe committed the crime.

Can prosecution call DB’s mother to the stand? He admitted guilt to her. Would it matter legally, or would it be hearsay or some other legal condundrum?

FOX6's Mary Stoker Smith: "Is he remorseful?"

"We talk about the families often and the victims, and he says to me that he prays for them, too, and he has to live with the fact that six people died because of him," said Woods. "He is very full of shame."

FOX6's Mary Stoker Smith: "Do you feel responsibility?"

"Yes," said Woods. "Had I just not bailed him out, then none of this would have happened."

Does "Soddi" have offspring? If so, I don't need/want details... I'm just curious.
