LE can’t make a profile without knowing the “why” and/or the target. This seems to be too unusual a crime.

Wasn't Jayme the target?

That's my take. Mr. Closs answered the door not expecting trouble but someone whose car broke down or ran out of gas. Then, I'm guessing, the perp saw that Closs wasn't armed and out came his gun. Closs saw that and tried to shut the door, but the perp kicked it open and shot Closs. Then he barged in and did the rest. That he was gone in 4 minutes with Jayme proves to me that he went there to abduct her and had the whole thing planned ahead of time.
That's one of my scenarios. He might have been a very trusting soul and opened the door. After all some folks in some rural areas of the country don't even lock their doors at night.

Otherwise, maybe Mr. Closs - wondering who would be at his door after midnight - might have asked who it was and the killer shot through the door prior to kicking it in.

Finally am caught up on this thread and am disappointed there is no info out yet and no announced progress. Sad, but this case just seems unique in all the different possible scenarios that could have possibly played out. But until we get more facts released, hopefully soon, don't know what else to say as I see no reason to change my original thoughts until I have some concrete facts to work with. One thing is I plan to go to Rice Lake in a week so I am looking forward to just get the pulse of so many of my friends, relatives, classmates, etc just to get their gut feeling. Although I never knew any Closs, Denise wasn't even born when I left for the military and James would have only been 6 years old, it is a very small, close-knit, friendly area so I am interested in what the locals are thinking. I will be there til after Thanksgiving. I hope and pray every day this case will be resolved shortly.

Maybe, maybe not. Tell that to the sailor who shot and killed an armed home invader a few years ago in Virginia Beach. The would-be invader did the same thing, he kicked in the door and was hit multiple times with 9mm rounds. In my father's case he had replaced both doors and frames with solid wood doors. The would-be invader would have taken the door down but by that time he would have been a sitting duck in that doorway. There's a reason LE refers to a doorway as a 'vertical coffin'.

Except that didn't happen here. Remember, the cops didn't recover any guns on the scene. I'm assuming that means no Closs family guns too. Closs probably went to the door not expecting to be killed. Why would he? There are VERY few murders around here. Most likely Closs thought somebody ran out of gas or had a flat on the highway.

Possiblity random, but from the rapid way the perp shot Closs, got inside the house, dispatched the mom, possibly hung up the (real) 911 call, and then departed with Jayme in 4 minutes flat (I discount the neighbor hearing the kill shots at 12:30 a.m.), tells me this was a planned targeted mission carried out with military like precision. Lack of known internet trail points to someone local who possibly observed Jayme and became fixated on her.
No internet trail could also mean Random and Focused. Goal is murder then subsequently taking Jayme for alternative motives and murdering her down a random road that leads to a field, then exiting on an easily accessed highway. MOO

I'm not buying the "he answered the door" scenario. It's midnight on a school night. James just got off work. I'd assume Denise and Jayme are asleep. Someone comes to the door, and James just answers it? Maybe I'm exceptionally cautious, but if someone comes to my door at midnight, I'm not going anywhere near it.

I'm losing track of the facts. I was thinking maybe if the neighbors were asleep the first shot or shots might have woke them up and the first one or two shots didn't really register because they weren't fully awake. But I went back and looked at the facts in the first page. They got home at 11:30 and went to bed at 12:15 and stated they were not asleep when they heard two shots.

I also wonder what the temps were that night. Did they have the windows closed? A closed up house with trees as a buffer can help silence a gunshot. That had to be a medium to large caliber gun or shotgun if they said it was loud.

I think the critical discussion was about having a septic vs. city sewer.
Or if it was searched for evidence.

It would be interesting to learn what you hear. Enjoy your trip back home.

Been wracking my brain, trying to figure how not only one (quite distinctive muscle car, but another regular everyday car) could disappear so quick.
Here's what I have so far.
1: maybe hiden in an auto body shop.
2: could be someone with a garage, and under the table business, car painting, detailing, soupING up,or moding type thing.
3: the cars are hidden in a storage unit.
4: it could be a car hobbyist, collector, with multi car garage.

Expanding on what you have suggested above:
6. Maybe someone who doesn't drive his Challenger in the winter months? I started looking around for info about Challenger owners and found a place where many like to talk about their cars. It seems muscle car owners, especially those in cold climates, sometimes only drive their car on the weekend and summer months. Then they put the car away under a tarp or in a garage when the salt starts to be used on the roads in order to protect the car and keep the miles low. Could be someone like that? In which case, the owner hiding his car away for the winter might not be suspicious to those close to him.
*Just more speculation...

Overnight temps in the 30's (F).

It had snowed here earlier on that Sunday. The temps were in the mid 20s to low 30s that night.

I'm not fully sold on that scenario either. However, I'm thinking he was in the area of the door when found if my memory is correct. I haven't ruled out that scenario, though. We don't know many times he was shot.

Then again, I've been assuming he was shot as the killer was entering just because he was found there. He could just as likely have crawled there after being shot elsewhere in the house. Yeah, that scenario muddies the water.

Thanks! So not only was the house closed up, but the heat was likely to be on. Those gunshots had to compete with some sound buffers plus some other noise at the time.

Thinking more about @human ‘s post re: what possible inferences can we make profile-wise (with the very limited factual information we have), I think this would vary in some ways depending on how we approach it as related to motive.

Meaning, if I/we knew for absolute certain that Jayme was the intended target for pedophelic/SA reasons, then elements within that profile would vary from one that say, hypothetically, is based on a revenge motive towards the parents, etc.

Therefore when approaching an “inferred” potential profile I’ll call it, we would have to list all the different possible motives and perhaps approach it that way.

In addition/at the same time we could see what commonalities these would share so as to create one which could be applicable to all potential motives.

—-ETA: really missing @Foxfire’s input here.
I wonder if @Blef or @Skigirl could help us with a profile? Here's a short summary just in case:
