The gun would still be right there, is the thing.

We don't know that it isn't or that it isn't buried in muck or that it wasn't stuck in his hand and chewed off and dragged away by a panther.

Realistically, we have reason to believe he had a gun, but no proof that he did or did not have a gun.

It doesn't justify hitting someone. Assault is wrong. Both of them were wrong to resort to it

clearly you've never been in a situation where you are cornered by someone or held by someone twice your size who is beating on you.

Only if they are of a "tender years". The FBI will initiate a missing persons report if the missing person is under the age of 12 or under an interstate aspect. An adult missing from their home, or in this case not coming back from a hike, would be directed to report the situation to local LE or County Sheriff.
