It looked to me that the couple who walk south at the very beginning may be Asian. Hard to tell. Melbourne is quite multicultural.

A lot of apartment complexes have a camera at the front door so you can see who your visitors are when someone buzzes you but it may not actually be recorded and kept.

Yeah, I would think the police probably would have checked the CCTV on board any tram in the area at that time (probably at most two trams) just to rule that out. I'm pretty sure most trams have CCTV.

I find it really odd that no one has come forward to say they heard something that night- a yell, a screech of tires... Anything. The person in the turkish restaurant who reported a scream- do we know if that has been confirmed? I haven't seen it referenced in the msm articles.

ITA. I've heard a few American tourists comment on the amount of graffiti you go past when you're on the train. I don't really notice it but I think some visitors see it as out of the ordinary and assume that it's indictative of the area being a bit dodgy.
