The thing that stands out to me is how intensively they searched that relatively small chunk of land. This is the most meticulous search of snow I've ever seen.
So I'm guessing either
A) They found something/s and need time to process and decide how to proceed. They may need time just to confirm anything found is actually related to the case.
B) They haven't found what they've been looking for or Gannon, so they're taking some time to focus on the...
You have no idea. It's an avalanche of nuttiness on the phone with any high profile incident. They're getting calls from all over the world. People can be really abusive too, no matter how polite the calltaker tries to be. It's incredibly frustrating when you're busy enough with stuff that's...
In my experience metal detectors are probably underutilized in SAR and LE. Surprisingly few people truly know how to use them and they just aren't used as often as one might think.
Maybe a tip or location data brought them to that general area, and hits by the dogs or found evidence led them to narrow it down more to the one side.
Perhaps someone finding something related to the case on the roadside. A local resident stumbling across the Switch or clothing. Something like that.
Hits by dogs may have narrowed it down, regardless of what brought them that far north in the first place.
eta: I gotta say though, the...
I think it's more than just that because they've narrowed it down so much and have invested all of their resources there. If they were only working with location data, I would expect a larger search area and a coarser initial search.
I wouldn't read too much into wildland crews showing up. They're sometimes used for extra manpower on things like SAR missions during the off-season. I highly doubt it has anything to do with the nature of the evidence, these crews don't routinely handle such things.
I'm concerned about snow plows if he was dumped close to the road. There have been cases of snow plows damaging or scattering remains that had been in a snowdrift.
Yes, they are certainly looking for any potential evidence, not just Gannon himself. When they find him we'll likely know rather quickly because it will become a death investigation at that point, unless he's found alive by some miracle. :'(
Any other evidence they find.... I wouldn't expect to...
They're being as meticulous as possible with this location. It's very very resource intensive so they must have a lot of confidence in the information that brought them there. IMO they've been looking for remains and small evidence. That's of course what they'd look for in any case like this but...
IANAL but I believe that could open up a can of worms that might even jeopardize a conviction on more serious charges. If she were in custody she could argue some violation of her rights and that could matter at trial. A confession would not necessarily be a slam dunk anyways.
It may also be...
It may be more quiet today because it's a holiday. That shouldn't affect the actual investigation and search but the Sheriff's Office may not have their whole PIO staff in and available to talk to the media.
Later in the statement she implies that it was a "he," possibly sent by someone else.
"Last they have more in-depth details that go along with this pointing to who sent the person or why he may have come."
My best guess is that she's trying to imply that maybe LH sent a mystery man to abduct...
