I guess I don't see that they would know the "how" unless the physical evidence was somehow tied to the missing child such as DNA, hair, etc. Just speculating, but they must have found something of the child. What else could it possibly be that would implicate likely death of the child?

There is physical evidence of what happened.. that statement makes me feel a bit sick.
