What exactly are the rules for a witness? Do they get told directly that they may be called as a witness & that they can't discuss anything... even if it doesn't go to court for over 21 years? Are they allowed councelling at least?

I think it'd be very difficult for the people around them to understand what they're going through. I imagine thoughts are changing rapidly from day to day as they process it all. It's an awful lot to process. And I don't think this is a situation anyone close to them would have been through...

There is (or at least used to be) also legal aid available which is not necessarily just for legal costs. From my experience, I think victims financial needs are met but that doesn't make you feel any better about things.
