If I read this correctly, the trailer and the tow vehicle were found in different locations. I understood at the time, apparently incorrectly, that the trailer and the bodies were found at a turn-out on Route 2 in East Montpelier. Do you know the current names of town highways 46 and 47 in Calais?

They can always upgrade to first degree if they want to. Charging with second degree gets him off the street and sidesteps any debate about premeditation, which might take more work to demonstrate.

Online hit a lick - Wiktionary, I find it identified both as African American vernacular and as Multicultural London English. (Still sounds to me like it's related to an animal's good luck in finding a salt lick.)
Wild guess: I'm guessing it is derived from the idea that cattle will come to a salt lick, as will deer and other wild creatures. Sounds like it might be the jargon of hunters in cattle country.
