Investigation helped lead authorities to body of girl missing after eight days

Johnson-Barr' body was found about a mile outside town, on the tundra, Taylor said.It was about half a mile from Devil's Lake, the city's water source, perhaps some 1,000 yards off Loop Road, Richards said. On Saturday, experts were detailing the scene where Johnson-Barr's body was found, and combed the tundra for clues. Her body will be sent to the state medical examiner's office for review, Taylor said. One question investigators are looking into is how long Johnson-Barr's body was there, he said.... Taylor would not explain what specifically led to the discovery of Johnson-Barr's body. But the evidence tied to the investigation provided a break that helped find her, he said.
Also this:

Taylor said that "additional evidence" from a number of sources had led to the discovery of her body in an area that had already been canvassed by searchers, but he would not disclose what the evidence was or the source or sources it came from. The team comprised law enforcement and volunteers.
In honor of Ashley Johnson-Barr, communities celebrate with vigils and dedicated song
So does that mean the tundra area where Ashley's body was found had been searched earlier and she was somehow missed? Or does that imply that her body had been moved at some point?

I guess we'll know more after the autopsy results are released. My heart breaks for Ashley's parents, family, friends and the tiny community of Kotzebue.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you": Family of Ashley Johnson-Barr expresses gratitude for community support
Statement from the family:
"The outpouring of support from the state, from the country, and from the entire the world is hard to explain but we are so thankful for the walks, the candlelight vigils and the fundraisers.

Thank you for keeping our family, our town in your prayers, we feel them. We would not be able to live through this without your prayers and support. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

It so hard to know that we will never see our baby girl again on earth but we know she is in heaven and her soul is at peace. It will always be hard for us but we felt the love from everyone, and we can use this strength to carry on. For eight days we hope and pray for a better outcome but when she was found a small sense of peace came over us. This is not what we wanted, we wanted our baby girl to graduate high school to have a family, but she won't be able to do that.

On behalf of the family, I would like to say thank you, thank you for all your support, thank you for all your comfort, your love that you've shown to our family."

Hundreds of pounds of donated food and supplies flown to Kotzebue

Three friends in Anchorage have spent the last week picking up donations to send food and supplies to search and rescue teams in Kotzebue.

The friends estimate they have sent around 2,000 pounds of supplies since Ashley Johnson-Barr went missing on Sept. 6.

Clara Glover, a customer service agent with PenAir, says she posted on Facebook last Tuesday calling for donations. "Seven people messaged me in the first hour who I had never met in my life."

Glover teamed up with friend Jenny Stansel, a flight attendant with Alaska Airlines, and Holly Taylor, who works at Cook Inlet Housing Authority, to collect and ship supplies. That has translated into hundreds of pounds worth of food, water and essential supplies like napkins being sent to the Northwest Alaska community

Tim Thompson, a spokesperson for Alaska Airlines, says the airline has been paying for the cost of the shipments, which is sometimes done when search and rescue teams and first responders need supplies in remote areas.

One example Thompson cited was the 2015 Sitka landslides that killed three people, when Alaska Airlines again paid for some shipments.

Stansel, Glover and Taylor estimate it would have cost around $2,000 to ship up the nearly 2,000 pounds of supplies sent over the past week.

The three friends have been traveling around town making pick ups from strangers who have spent hundreds of dollars on food and supplies. "Alaska is just one huge, small community," said Stansel.

he group is being contacted on social media and is accepting more donations to send another 1,000 pounds of supplies Wednesday to Kotzebue for Barr-Johnson's memorial and pot luck.

Heartbreaking.
This just about makes me weep. What an incredibly lovely and generous statement.

"A sworn affidavit submitted by an unnamed Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent reports that investigators used geo-location data from Johnson-Barr's phone to discover that on the day of her disappearance, it had traveled roughly two miles east of downtown Kotzebue.

They traveled to that location Friday, Sept. 14.

"At approximately 4:15pm, Ashley's body was located one quarter mile off the road on the tundra in an area that could only be accessed by fourwheeler or on foot," wrote the FBI special agent. "This was an area that was concealed by thick alder and willow brush and a depression in the ground.""

Wow! From your link:
The FBI special agent says a person whom Wilson sometimes stays with, found the Johnson-Barr's cellphone in Wilson's jacket pocket on the evening of Sept. 6, the night that the girl disappeared.

"When she picked up the phone and tried to unlock it she saw Ashley's name displayed on the screen," wrote the unnamed FBI agent. "(The person) knew Ashley and her family, so (she) immediately contacted Ashley's mother, who advised that Ashley was missing. Ashley's father went to (the) residence and retrieved the phone and it was later turned over to the Kotzebue Police Department."

According to the FBI, Johnson-Barr's family and Wilson were relatives, with Wilson visiting Johnson-Barr's family on multiple occasions.

According to the affidavit, Wilson was interviewed by FBI Task Force Officer Leonard Torres on Sept. 13. In the interview, Wilson is alleged to have denied knowing Ashley, denied seeing Ashley's name on the cellphone, and repeatedly said that he found the cellphone near the NANA building on Third Avenue.
Feds: Suspect had missing girl's cell phone, lied about knowing her
So Wilson was the person who "found" Ashley's phone in the street. What a horrible thing to do to your own relatives.

An FBI agent said in the affidavit that Wilson made an unexplained two-hour trip on a four-wheeler around 5:30 p.m. on the night that Ashley disappeared. That's in the same time frame that the her cell phone traveled to the area where her body was later found.

So perhaps Wilson turned it in as being “found” near the Nana building? But once they analyzed the data the deemed it was never at that location but actually was in the tundra area, thus leading them to body and arrest of Wilson for providing false information.

Doesn’t sound like she was ever anywhere near the Nana building. That was just a story. How did this guy think he would get away with this?
Yep. From the article I think he told his female friend who found the phone in his jacket that he found it in the street. I wonder if he ever had any intention of it being located - it was probably just bad luck for him that the woman found it.

His friend found it in his jacket - he probably told her he found it in the street. Why he kept it instead of destroying it is beyond me. A real Einstein he is.

Linked from Federal charges detail how cell phone led investigators to Kotzebue girl’s body

Early the next morning, on Sept. 7, Wilson himself showed up at the police station "and reported that he'd heard police were looking for a girl named 'Chelsea' or 'Kelsie.'" He explained that he'd found the phone Johnson-Barr's father had turned over to police dropped in the middle of the street.

That was a lie, according to the affidavit.
