This article says its been taken off the "fast track", and may even now take as long as however long the defense counsel deems necessary, maybe like Chase Merritt's case.
I wonder how they benefits them to delay that long other than practical reasons for the defense lawyers who would make a bundle on the case for longer hours billed.

"Its a complicated case".......not just he got angry, he blew his stack, he became violent, and murdered his wife with his bare hands. End of story. Now, "its complicated".

Complicated? I see nothing complicated about it.

In my opinion, the only thing complicated about it is how many witnesses there were! With that many witnesses, it should be all but an open and shut case. Crazy that her family - especially her children - has to be drawn through a longer process. Sad!

Hey!

For some reason I have this case listed under April 23, 2018 for a pretrial hearing - anyone know "where" I got that date? LOL! I've read the articles posted and don't actually see that date. Did I dream it??

TIA!

Can you believe an article that says he pushed her off the cruise ship?

Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

Was kind of thinking that was some sort of misprint as I've read elsewhere that he did try to push her off the ship after the alleged murder

So no DP wonder if that's somehow for the sake of the children

Not excusing the husband whatsoever but I really hope this tragedy was the result of a tussle in tight quarters, and where victim hit her head. Seems likely the couples children/family did NOT advocate for death penalty. Can't imagine what the victim's Dad and Brother put themselves through knowing a dometic dispute occurred while they too were on-board the ship. Since the tragedy, an adult child of the couple is known to publicly and/or openly tweet birthday greetings, etc. to both her parents so I sense a relationship remains with Dad....IMO.

Cruise ship murder trial pushed back to November 2018

Complexity of case, amount of discovery given as reasons for delay

The original trial date for Kenneth Manzanares, accused of first-degree murder of his wife Kristy Manzanares, was April 23, 2018. Judge Timothy Burgess ruled Wednesday that the trial is now set to begin Nov. 5, 2018.

.....requested the change in date due to the large amount of discovery of the case. There are 72 audio files, eight video files, 541 photographs and nearly 2,000 pages of notes provided so far in the case, according to the case scheduling order. Potential witnesses in the case are located all over the country and in some cases, other countries.

McGrady estimated that the trial will take about four weeks. Burgess mentioned that the trial is likely to take a few days off during the week of Thanksgiving.

During the brief status update Wednesday at the U.S. District Court in Juneau, Manzanares did not speak. He wiped his eyes at the beginning of the hearing but showed minimal signs of emotion after that.

Event initiated by victim's former Employer.....

With a theme of “Stand together – It’s up to us to end domestic violence,” the 2018 gala is being held in memory of Kristy Manzanares, a St. George woman who was killed in a domestic violence incident in July.

Dove Center is a local agency providing emergency shelter, victim advocacy and counseling services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The gala is held each year to raise funds that help ensure the continuation of critical services to survivors free of charge.

I haven't seen any "current" updates for this case; has anyone found anything recent? - so going what I post in #470:

But in my notes I have this:

*Pretrial Hearing - AK - Kathy Manzanares (39) (July 25, 2017) - Kenneth Manzanares (39), husband accused on Alaskan cruise ship/indicted on 1st degree Federal Murder/pled not guilty on 8/23//Update 9/18: waived his right to a speedy trial. U.S. District Chief Judge Timothy Burgess set a new pre-trial hearing for April 23, 2018. (delayed from 10/23/17 hearing). Update 11/17 DA will not seek DP.

or do I have that wrong and just mis-typed??

Hmmm, Complexity of case and amount of discovery....

What could that be? I can fathom complexity of case, so does that fit in with amount of discovery?

Sarcasm alert—Complexity and discovery probably have to do with gathering enough information so the defense can blame Kristy for her own murder.

TRIAL RESET TO BEGIN NOV 5, 2018..... Both attorneys — Assistant Federal Public Defender Jamie McGrady and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt — requested the change in date due to the large amount of discovery of the case.

Manzanares pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in August.

From what I have read previously, the complexity is the fact that their witnesses are all over the world; and the "crime scene" is not local. The defense attorney is going to have a hay day with this case. The suspect needs to spare his family and hers from this circus.
