A male witness has told Major Crime detectives he found the suitcase just after the road was resurfaced in late March.
He said he found the suitcase behind low bushes a short distance from the road shoulder — and then dragged it several metres closer to further inspect its contents.
Detectives believe that initial location is precisely where another man found the remains concealed among distinctive children’s clothing.
Major Crime officer-in-charge Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the man has told police he “found a suitcase behind a bush’’ and had dragged it out and inspected it.

He did not see the skeletal remains among the clothing where he first found the suitcase.

So had most of the contents already been tipped out when this person found and dragged the suitcase closer to the road shoulder.
Do a road shoulder and a verge differ ?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_verge

a narrow strip of grass or plants and sometimes also trees located between the carriageway (roadway)curb (or road surface edge or shoulder) and the boundary (right-of-way line) of a road.[1]

I had to look up what a road verge is [emoji4]

Didn't the police release the dimensions of the suitcase? I can't find that anymore. Anyone remember what they were?

Converted to inches 23 5/8" x 15 3/4" x 7 7/8" for those of us Americans still stuck on the Imperial System [emoji1]

When I read things in centimeters I always think the size is a lot bigger than it really is. After doing the conversion I'm surprised how small the suitcase is. I can't believe clothes, other items not mentioned PLUS a skeleton FIT into there! And some items may be missing due to people picking through. This makes me think that the child is toward the younger side of the scale. Or like PrimeSuspect mentioned, the bones could have been placed there afterwords. (Maybe even by the same person!)

My money's on them being placed afterwards for sure.

Hope we get more information today!

I think that's why the info is taking a long time to come out. I think the skeleton is possibly very old.

I find the media reports confusing. Some make it sound like the body was found IN the suitcase, but others make it sound like they were on the ground NEAR the suitcase.

Yeah, there was a bit of confusion. Both versions are correct. The bones and clothing were initially in the suitcase. At least one unknown person emptied the contents behind a bush and dragged the suitcase to closer to the road. Over time, others stopped to inspect the suitcase by the side of the highway (whilst the remains were behind the bush.)

The tiny size of the suitcase must be why police believe the bones were placed into the suitcase, not the body - as awful as it is to type that.

Richard III's 500-year old skeleton was identified by DNA. I wonder why this child's is proving so difficult.

UPDATE: Police used DNA technology to charge 56yo #Enfield man with the sexual assault of two women in Nth Adelaide in 2012 @7NewsAdelaide

SA Police say it's the first time in Australia this DNA technology has resulted in criminal charges. @7NewsAdelaide

Forensics SA say they could potentially use the same DNA technology for the #Wynarka bones case.

In the article below about the arrest it explains how “familial” DNA search works. Very interesting

I wonder if they can use it in another historical case that has a lot of relevance on another thread?
