I hope that every person in Victoria making a Victim Impact Statement which will be read to the court mentions the added stress of living with lack of confidence in the justice system when released hardened criminals reoffend. It is obviously becoming a significant problem.

I'm not sure if it's a no no to post about other cases? I just read this and thought it's relevant in the discussion about how it would be good to have more info about how a sentence comes to be determined?

Warning: Another graphic story

Now without knowing all the details, to me, if you've knowingly disposed of a body in this manner and murdered over something so stupid, I would think your rehabilitation chances are slim to none. Yet this guy could be on the streets again at age 47, 51 at worst. And from what I read, this is not considered a light sentence?

You are right, it is the framework which needs changing. However, the decisions the board makes affects every single one of us. How is this different to a company CEO? All Im saying is there needs to be accountability. If they are too lenient, which is quantifiable by the number of repeat offenders on parole, then fire those responsible. If this is a cushy retirement role for these people they might hold for years and years surely this is a problem. Make them accountable for their actions!

You are correct.

They should me made to justify the decision and be open and transparent to the community, so we are better informed.

No one can predict what someone will do when hey get out, the original sentencing parameters need to be reviewed so decisions like this, cant be made by a parole board who see a shining angel in front of them.

Ghastly stuff

My argument is I dont know enough yet, I think we'll all end up on the same page in the end.

Does anyone remember the sentencing questionnaire that was in the herald sun about a year or so ago? I filled one out and remember thinking as I was going through it - ok that seems to be an adequate sentence for that crime, so what am I complaining about huh. But I found it so frustrating as I felt it was not painting an accurate picture. Ok, the max sentence for X crime is 20 years, that seems fair, but is it the reality? How often do judges impose the maximum sentence? Isn't it more often 20 year max, judge imposes 12 years with a non parole period of 8 years. Thats what frustrates me.

The car at the PC address appears to be immobile through a flat tyre. It has smashed windows.
The vehicle at the 5 Simpson St address appears to be the same model and colour and so may well have been SH's car.
As the car at the PC address appears immobile perhaps that was why the yellow car was used and why it is so significant in the investigation.

I went for a drive as it is a 5 minute drive for me. I do not believe it is number 5 as the same car is still there. There are 3 units next door (to the left) and flats on the corner but I think they would be classed as Lord St.? I did not see any Police tape or anything?

Based on the hubcaps, I think it's a similar, but different car.

*self modding.

I'm now thinking based on the "quiet court of flats", it's likely those listed around 20 Simpson St?

another thing, look at 5 Simpson street Bacchus Marsh on google street view, that car look familiar to you?

edit: someone already mentioned it...

Very, very interesting about SC's recent, repetitive visits to SH's house at all times of the day and night. I have a feeling I know what's going on there, a possible motive for the killing and have mentioned it before (posts removed out of respect to the victim and family), make of it what you will...

Yep, have the same thought after reading that article. The motive and 'how they knew each other' was discussed here earlier.

I'm not too sure, But they are dodgy looking, I was just on google street view and there are units directly across from number 5, But I was too busy looking on the other side to notice them. I think they may be the correct ones.

The man accused of killing Melbourne woman Sarah Cafferkey showed no emotion as he faced a magistrate's court this morning.

Steven James Hunter, 47, sat silently in court and spent most of the time staring at the floor during the brief procedural filing hearing.

The Bacchus Marsh man did not speak during the court appearance and his lawyer indicated he would not be seeking bail.
A committal hearing date was set for March.

Last night during an out-of-sessions hearing a Melbourne court was told Sarah Cafferkey was stabbed several times before her body was driven from the murder scene and stuffed in to a wheelie bin.

Hunter showed no emotion when he appeared barefoot and dressed in a white forensic jumpsuit last night as he was charged with murdering 22-year-old Ms Cafferkey on November 10 at a Bacchus Marsh residence.

I can't understand why he took her body to PC? Could it have been to try and incriminate someone ELSE??? Excuse me for being dumb, but I'm confused. Somebody help a preggo brain out. :(

(I have a pic saved but can't upload as it needs a URL)

I believe that's the one we're all discussing as number 5? It only shows me even numbers when I'm on street view, so it's the one I'm discussing anyhow (under the tree). I think it has different hubcaps and looks to have tinted windows?

I can't understand why he took her body to PC? Could it have been to try and incriminate someone that was living there? Excuse me for being dumb, but I'm confused. Somebody help a preggo brain out. :(

I think we're all wondering that. Especially since there now seems to be 1 resident of PC not accounted for (as in, not mentioned in the media, not that I'm suggesting someone is on the run). It leads to those wonders about whether TB is that person and if so what role (if any?) they've played?

Diggety what would be of interest is the positions of influence of those 9 males and 8 females. Are the males all ex Judges Judges of the Supreme Court, Magistrates etc. and the 8 females part-timers? Also what is the criteria for assessments for release back into the community. Do they have a formulated guideline? etc. How are these assessments made? by whom? 'Skill set' in composition of the Parole Board needs to be reviewed IMO. Mr. Ari Freiberg from the Sentencing Advisory Council stated on Drive program with Derryn Hinch yesterday (www.3AW.com.au) that the Parole Board deals with hundred of these applications for parole; about 70% of the time they get it right and parolees don't re-offend. Sometimes they get it wrong.
With all the different types/grades of crimes, are their different grades of Parole Board meetings? For example, is there a specialist Parole Board meeting for serial and serious criminals (i.e rapists and murderers) and their 'risk' to women and girls? Or is it one size fits all, that is, one board decides all?
Should the Parole Board be accountable to a higher authority for their decisions? Being accountable outside of themselves and being open to review could help identify where decisions went wrong, what information was given undue weight, what information was taken into account/excluded etc.
IMO we could benefit from being informed about how the parole Board is structured and operationalised and any further information about this is welcome.

Interesting post. I have worked with two of the community members of the board and they are bureaucrats through and through. They come from a different perspective to citizens in the general community. While they live in the community like everyone else, their thinking is very different and is shaded by the bureaucratic process they have been subjected to for many years. In fact, I'm surprised that one of them is even on the board as their general demeanour is of being negative and argumentative. Interesting. It's often not about who is best for community representative roles but who knows who and who can write the best application telling them what they want to hear. Someone in the general community, highly intelligent etc won't get a look in because they are seen to not be experienced enough yet bureaucrats with little experience in the outside world are are seen to be more appealing because of their bureaucratic background. JMHO

Me too. It seems odd. He could have been trying to frame someone else or maybe he just went into meltdown and denial. If he wasn't specifically trying to frame someone else then he has not really made any practical attempt to hide his participation in the crime. He would have known that he was spotted with SC and as we have seen it was only a matter of time before he was apprehended. I think that the Police had a good idea of who it was as soon as they decided foul play could be involved. MOO

I guess it will all come to light in March!

Ms Dickson said she couldn't think about the man arrested in relation to Sarah's murder, though she believed he might have been introduced to her through a mutual friend.
