Off topic to current discussion: there was a request made by LE to alert locals to looking out for car bits that may have come loose...we were all questioning what that might have meant such as mirrors, pieces of headlight covers, taillights, etc.
I'd like to add my two pennies worth at this point after I was driving behind a truck tonight....bits of towing hitches can fall off....if there is a lot of ATV activity in that area it's possible one of the toy haulers in the area may have lost a ball hitch etc.
or even a bike rack?
This is one of the more perplexing parts of the puzzle to me too, newone. I can understand looking for articles of clothing that may have been discarded. Any abductor would want to get rid of identifying attire. But looking for car parts means that they have a reason to look for car parts. What car parts could that be, and why?? Whose car is missing parts?? :waitasec:
Rural mailbox may have been damaged by hit and run and perhaps there is a bit that was at scene?
Tire cover ((from those SUV's with rear mount exterior spare))?
Makes one wonder if there is evidence that perhaps our wee boy was struck and whisked away?
It's a headscratcher for sure.
As it took them a few days to start looking for car parts, it could be that someone ordered new parts for a car soon after William disappeared, or took their vehicle to a repair shop for repair and/or new parts, or it is evident that something recently came off someone's vehicle.
To me, it means that someone is on their radar, or that someone heard a noisy car driving through the forest (tailpipe dragging perhaps) around the time William went missing.
Or they need some story substantiated .....
I always took that reference to looking for missing car parts as being attributable to poor reporting. I know it was printed in the local Port Macquarie paper but I imagined it was just some junior journalist or copy person getting their wires crossed and reporting a search for missing car parts instead of a search for *items discarded from a car*!

NSW Rescue Sergeant said about "things thrown"
Superintendent Paul Fehon spoke about "part of vehicle"
Superintendent Paul Fehon said the State Emergency Service's volunteers will walk the forest's trails as they search for part of a vehicle that may have become detached.
Teams of emergency services began the first of a two-day search of roadsides ‘‘in case something has been thrown’’, said NSW Police Rescue Sergeant John King.

Was William wearing shoes at the time of his disappearance? If he wasn't there is no way he would have gotten far in bush without them? His last known photo had no shoes.
