I really wonder what suddenly made that daughter escape and contact the authorities. It seems these poor children have been so contained in an enclosed environment all their lives.
Why did none of them do this before now? What finally made one of them break for freedom? Thank goodness she did.
I think many people, especially when the abuse begins in childhood, don't even consider running. Abuse can really do a number on one's psyche. :(

I had a hard time sleeping too - I'm sure the kids are feeling such a mix of emotions...relief, fear, guilt, confusion, etc. What sort of plan will be made for them?

I worry about the kids and am keeping my fingers crossed that caring people will be there for them.

I couldn't care less what happens to the parents except they need to be kept from the kids.

Disturbing case.

I'll add I hope the "parents" remain locked up for as long as they are breathing.

Do you suppose some of the "kids" were mentally challenged? Maybe that's why the chains? Was the family receiving $ from the State of California for any reason?

I'm going to guess that the older children were chained over night and unchained in the morning when they could be supervised so they couldn't escape while the parents slept.

I also wonder if starving the kids was (in their minds) a form of fasting they thought was religiously beneficial for them. I think they probably started the fasting exercises at early ages and it steadily grew worse and affected the older kids more as they probably suffered for more years of malnutrition. Again in the minds of the parents (scary place to go) they probably self righteously thought they were doing the right thing for the spiritual well being of the kids. JMO.

AGAIN I am not blaming the neighbours. But there does lie a level of responsibility within a community to protect the vulnerable. Of course the neighbours will feel bad because they went about their daily lives, and I don't say they shouldn't. There should be more awareness made, where people are encouraged to look out for each other. It's sad times!

It sounds like the family in question was quiet and did not alarm neighbors. There was an online mention of a neighbor who knocked on the door, offering to mow the lawn. They did not open the door. What could anyone do if the people next door just want to be left alone? Thinking of my cul-de-sac nine families, I really don't know what goes on inside their homes. We wave, visit occasionally in the yards, but in 31 years I have never been inside seven of the nine homes, and we are the friendly ones on the street. The entire cul-de-sac does not interact. I cannot blame the Perris neighbors.

30th anniversary Vow Renewal video, October 31, 2015:

ETA to add from same link:
David Turpin's parents, told ABC News they were 'surprised and shocked' at the news.
The couple, who live in West Virginia, said they had not visited the family for four or five years but had spoken to them on the phone, although not with their grandchildren.

We are hearing a little bit from the dad's parents... And their shock at the news...

I wonder where the mom's parents/family is?

Still so weird....no guests it seems.

They lived a fantasy world: isolated in the home, visits to fake Disneyland, visits to fake Vegas, renewal vows with fake Elvis.

jmo

The dad reminds me of Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

from abc7 article:
"James and Betty Turpin, who live in West Virginia, said David and Louise had so many children because "God called on them."

They were given "very strict homeschooling," and would memorize long passages in the Bible, the grandparents said. Some children tried to memorize it in its entirety.

While David and Louise were in the Pentecostal faith, they did not have a church in the area and David's parents knew of no friends that the couple had."

Sad, sad, sad for those children.
Not sure what to think re ^ excerpt.

The poor kids were spiritually persecuted as well. Bless them :(

Yes! Wedding dresses are NOT cheap!

Edit - just watched the video of their vow renewal. The dress may be courtesy of the chapel from the looks of it. Source - got married in Vegas but not in a cheesy chapel lol but I looked into a lot of elopement packages before deciding not to go with one

maybe they renewed their vows when he hit a Jack pot...

Comp for frequent visits to a casino?

Conceiving at 46 naturally isn’t common. Sorry, it just isn’t. Unless there’s pics of her pregnant with the youngest, my gut is telling me it may not be her child.

The 13 children were all biological offspring of mom and dad...multiple news sources have stated that, and I tend to believe it in this instance. JMO

Getting pregnant in one's late 40s can more easily happen if the mother continues to get pregnant over the years--the fertility period can be extended. I see it all the time in my genealogy charts with the farm wives. And I agree that for some women, even today, this can be a fulfilling and purposeful choice (though we see it less often than a generation or two ago).

My own instincts - just a hypothesis at this point - are that mom perhaps struggled with advancing mental illness, and dad tried to keep her happy (eg. three vow renewal ceremonies since 2011 per the Heavy.com article, which also mentioned her smirking and spitting when arrested). Close friend growing up had a schizophrenic mom who only felt 'well' when pregnant; big family. Mom was in and out of hospitals all her life and the elder sibs (big family) mostly raised the younger. Schizophrenia is also a disease often associated with 'religiosity' (though not to be confused with any one faith).

The bankruptcy in 2011, the move to CA, the lessening of ties to family and friends in the past 4-5 yrs (per facebook and grandparent comments), last vow renewal in 2015 or 2016...in my opinion this could have been a scenario where there was a downward spiral of increasing isolation and mental illness that was unaddressed. My heart breaks for those kids. The last vow renewal mom had a baby in her arms. That baby is now two...time to get pregnant again, be a bride again, or have a breakdown. ☹️

JMO, and just a guess for now.

Wondering in their homeschooling if the older children knew they were legally free?

I could be wrong but I don't think they gambled. I think their financial problems were because they didn't pay their bills. They took out credit cards and didn't pay them. They took out loans for new cars and didn't pay them. That's the sure-fire way to end up bankrupt....and I get the feeling that they really didn't care but just drifted along and circled downward in their problems with no plans for the future.

He is 57 years old, in debt, with a house full of dependents....what was his retirement plan? (Jail might be the answer to his prayers for a secure old age.)

I'm going a little off the deep end here, but if you're interested... I believe this is a book on David Turpin's grandfather.

Now I've been here on WS for a few years, and I've seen some horror-filled cases, some cases have made me mad or sad enuff to scream or cry, but this one is the damnedest one I have ever seen. This one is just pure nutz.
I have no idea what we've got here, Peeps... yes, indeed it's bizarre. Dayam. SMH. :notgood:

And one more thing,

:greetings:...:wagon:... :welcome:... :cheer:

to Websleuths, terrace2!! We're glad you're here!!

I am trying to catch up today. I'm sure this was already mentioned, but...NONE of those kids look like adults. The wedding pictures were from 2 years ago, not a single one looks over 18, let alone in their twenties!!! Just when I think I can't be shocked anymore, I think this one is going to do it. I cannot not imagine what horrors happened to these children.

The 17 year old is incredibly brave. I hope that they get so much help to heal from this. Surely, there are victims advocates to make sure the adult children have the correct services to heal? I worry about them not getting as much help.

Bankruptcy proceedings showed he at least had a 401k with $80k in it at one point.

I agree, don't think gambling was the likely problem.

What a bizarre story, I've spent ages looking at the photos and really struggle to even guess which are the seven adult children. One of the girls looks a bit older, so I guess she's the eldest (although I'd say more like 20 than 29), the tallest boy (with glasses) doesn't really look much over 16 but he was about that tall back in 2011 so he must be one of them... 3-4 more of the girls look mid-teens so presumably are 18+ in reality. If the dates of birth of the older children posted a few pages back are actually accurate then I'm shocked that the middle boy is over 20, he looks about 12!

What a strange family, everything I could say has been said before I think, the Elvis weddings, the Disneyland visits, the thinness and clear lack of development of the children, they've been a very strange family for many years. I hope those poor children (I'm including the adults in that) get plenty of help, poor kids. :(
