Home schooling. I get it, public schools lose funding when people home school. (Too bad, so sad!).

I cannot believe so much focus would be on the home schooling aspect of this case. No gymnastics, no little league, no trips to the grocery store, no pediatrician appointments, playgrounds, local pools, libraries... kid's that are seen ANYWHERE.... home schooling was the least of this problem.

I home schooled my son's for two years because there was a problem with Asian gang violence in their school. ( If you don't like that reality, you can use the triangle at the bottom of this page.). We had a spectacular time! I was able to Incorporated courses such as " spelunking" formal letter writing ect.. my children and I loved it. A move and a full time job, and my children were able to safely return to public school once again.

And what about all the children so bullied at school they kill themselves because schools are such a paragon of attentiveness and reliability.

You have got to be kidding me.

Louise Turpin of Perris, who was arrested on suspicion of torture and child neglect on Jan. 14, 2018, released two Maltese mixes to Perris Animal Control, city spokesman Joe Vargo said.
He said both are approximately 1-year-old female Maltese mixes; one is black and one is white. Both dogs are available for adoption at the Public Works Yard, 1015 South G St., Vargo said.

Dogs in better condition than their own flesh and blood

It’s a shame that there aren’t more resources is what I meant. Your parents pay taxes for that very reason. I guess I look at it differently since public schools are better than private schools where I live. We pay out the butt in taxes bc of the school systems. I think everyone should have the same access to resources despite what you pay in taxes. That’s great your brother is excelling in his studies. I applaud your mom for taking matters into her own hands and being so dedicated.

I respectfully disagree homeschooled kids get a better education. It might be regional, but teachers need masters degrees to be an educator. And kids strongly benefit socialization. JMO

Where I live, the public school system is a joke.
Teachers don't actually want to spend the time helping kids who are struggling and they rush through the curriculum, leaving kids half educated on everything or completely lost...They don't fail kids and let them advance to the next grade. Which doesn't benefit those who struggled in the previous grade.

My brother is in karate, soccer and French.
He definitely is socialized.

And I saw earlier (no longer have the link at hand) that there were two small dogs. Only one of which is up for adoption.

I wasn't aware that public schools lose funding for homeschooling.

Lived in Texas for almost 30 years adult life and I always paid taxes for the school districts regardless if my kids were in public school or homeschooled (I homeschooled my kids after 6th grade due to religious beliefs that I no longer subscribe to).

Where do you live that public schools lose funding? I'm sincerely curious.

That’s unfortunate that your school system is lacking. It’s a shame when teachers don’t put the needs of their students first. I’m also sorry you’re taking my posts so personally. You’ve had your experiences, and I’ve had mine. I didn’t intend to upset you. My apologies.

I’m curious too. Where I live, you pay taxes regardless if you have kids in the school system or not.

Edit - I meant to say you pay the *same* taxes whether or not you have kids in the school system

Focus is on the home schooling for obvious reasons. With no required checks, this torture went on for over a decade. Had there been any oversight of home schooling, it's possible that 12 children would not have been tortured. And it's a certainty, IMO, that this could not have gone on for so many years if they had been in school.

Nobody is attacking the idea of home schooling. They are simply pointing out the obvious and saying this is a wake up call that there needs to be some oversight.

Great post!
I too was homeschooled for a year and a half.
I was bullied in elementary school and my parents didn't want to send me to junior high and continue to get bullied by the same people.

I also mentioned that my 6 year old brother is homeschooled.
My mom can teach him things he wouldn't learn in a traditional school setting, such as cursive writing. She can teach him at his own pace. She does maybe an hour of teaching, but that doesn't mean he's stopped learning. He'll do his little workbooks that my mom doesn't use for homeschool lessons, and he'll ask how to spell things.

My mom enjoys it.

I don't understand why people have bad things to say about homeschools.

This is pure speculation but last time they moved, the parents left the dogs and a kitten in Texas. We know the animals were found by a neighbor and okay, but the kids didn't know that. What if the parents said they were moving again and the girls didn't want their dogs to be left behind/die, so they escaped now for that reason? I know LE said they were planning it for 2 years, but the thought of losing their dogs could have spurred them to act now.

Cant remember who asked earlier, but here’s the photo where Louise appears to be pregnant.

I havent seen that picture before. Those lovely children.

On another note, i've just looked again through the daily mail photos and had another look at the video. LT strikes me as being very lucid and with it. I know that the newspaper has selected some 'choice' photos for publication, but, i dunno, she strikes me as being quite compos mentis. Totally at odds with the original mug shot or the reports of her spitting etc.

Its absolutely bizarre.

I grew up in upstate NY many years ago, and at that time there was a NY State Board of Regents. The board determined what needed to be taught in each grade in each academic subject. The board's guide book was sent out to teachers at the beginning of each school year.

When it came time for final exams at the end of the year, there was the school exam and the State Board of Regents exam. You had to pass the state Regent exam in order to be promoted to the next grade. It was up to the teachers to make sure they had taught the material in the state guide books.

It was said that it was a way to make sure the quality of education was uniform state-wide. It didn't matter if you lived in a poor community, you got the same education as those in the wealthy areas. It was said that it was also a way to check up on teachers.......if enough students in one classroom failed to pass the Regents test, it could be the teacher was just not teaching.

Maybe this type of state board tests could be given to home schooled children. It would determine if the children were learning what was necessary. The test brought to the home school location and the state instructor staying while the home schooled students took the exam. This would accomplish two things..............test the children's academic achievement, and also allow a state instructor to be in the home school location while the test was being taken would give time to make observations.

Here in NC, I believe homeschooled children have to pass the end of grade tests given in grades 3, 5 and 8. Maybe they are given every year but those are the ones that count. Homeschoolers should definitely be having their academic progress assessed.

That's fine. It really doesn't matter which is best in terms of this case. The conversation should be about what kinds of oversight can be implemented to prevent kids from literally being tortured without anyone ever having to see them outside the house.

I would place money that 1) they didn’t spend a long time at Disney and 2) they most definitely didn’t get to go on any rides.

I'll see that bet and raise you this: They had to pay to get in the darn park. Why would they not go on any rides. and what would make you think that they didn't? Because you weren't privy to the visual proof?<modsnip>

My understanding is that Federal funding levels are based on the number of enrollees. That's the reason for daily roll call. Of course, that doesn't affect local and state school board taxes one iota. But I believe all states lose the federal funding when children aren't in the seats in a school building.

Ya know if people don't get off the home school verses public school we might get the smack down from the mods.
Best get back to the case we are all following.

While I agree with you, regulations are being rolled back as we speak on so many different levels. Many feel like their private lives, their business and corporations shouldn't have to answer to regulations. Then something like this happens:(
