It sounds like the Rincon thing was a tip that didn't pan out, based on what was learned from the admin of their page. The son went out looking for then at Valley Center at after 5:30 pm and maybe their house, IIRC, with no success, then called the police, who issued the Amber Alert, IIRC, after checking to see if had returned home, for what it's worth.

The timing can't be right that the son went looking for them "at Valley Center at after 5:30pm". (Quoting your post).
He was calling them continuously at 4:30pm when they didn't show up at 4, so he wouldn't have gotten to Valley Center until at least a couple hours later, which would be around 6:30pm I would think, at the earliest.

I think they are going to have to get out and physically walk up and down those roads. Moving no faster than walking speed will allow them to see things much more clearly than driving along in a vehicle.

I know it is easy to sit here in the comfort of my air conditioned home with a can of beer in one hand and a laptop mouse in the other, and make such suggestions. We all know how these searches go sometimes though, with the searchers claiming they have "exhaustively searched" a certain area, and then a month or two later the person is found by a jogger or somebody out walking their dog dead smack in the middle of the search zone that was "previously searched."

Luckily in this case, they are looking for a large object that reflects sunlight and is much easier to spot, but it could still be either partially or almost completely concealed from view. Walking along at a snails pace and getting way over on the shoulder will allow them to see and notice things that normally wouldn't be seen. I've walked along the side of roads before and it's amazing all the junk you see littered around down in the bar ditches. Beer cans, baby diapers, tow straps, water bottles, car parts, tires, etc......normally you never notice this stuff when zipping along at highway speed.

Using bicycles instead of walking might be another good option, but it would force one to stay on the pavement rather than get way over past the shoulder. It is a hazardous process either way because of the rude motorists that seem to think they are required to drive like bats out of hell no matter where they are heading.

Yesterday I was driving from San Diego to my home in Palm Desert (next to La Quinta). When I do this I take the most direct route which is a windy road over mountains; 79S to 371E to 74 into Palm Desert. This would have been the most direct route for Dianna and Cecil to take and it does happen to go right by another casino, Cahuilla Casino. While I was driving I got this eery feeling that this could have well been the exact route that Dianna and Cecil took as it was the most direct and it went by another casino. This route is somewhat isolated and very steep and windy without guard rails.

although we do know the couple went missing in Valley View at 2:00 p.m. and were rumored to have stopped in Rincon, which just happened to have a license plate stolen at 5:00 p.m. just sayin....

although I believe they were in an accident in the brush or off a cliff, I just wanted to point this out .... and, they were reported missing at 8:00pm.

Maybe this could be a part of the parallel investigation?

Valley Center Ground Zero for mysteriously vanishing Fullerton couple
by Dan Weisman, Valley Road Runner, Staff Writer, May 21, '15

"Numerous aerial and ground searches launched in the last two weeks between Valley Center and La Quinta have yielded no results. The San Diego Sheriff's Office has not ruled out foul play.

They reportedly always were in communication with family members and very punctual."

A 25-year-old victim at Harrah's Resort Southern California around 5 p.m. reported the theft of a vehicle license plate.

Around 8 p.m. Dianna Knutson-Bedwell, 68 and Cecil Knutson were reported missing at Valley View Casino.

Oh, JerseyGirl, I responded in haste before, completely missed your link. Thank you very much!!!

Makes you wonder just how many missing people/cars have ended up hidden by trees or down ravines, without anyone ever knowing what happened. Must be loads in a huge place like America, I couldn't even hazard a guess but I reckon there must be a fair few Websleuths cases that ended this way. :(

I was very involved in following the disappearance of Gail Palmgren. Her vehicle went off a mountain road and wasn't found for about 7 months. (I still don't believe that it was just an accident, but that's a discussion for another time)

More good grist for the mill. I've noted the theft on the map. Here, again, is the link:

Yup, and we are only 12 days into this disappearance. Let's hope it doesn't drag out too much longer. I sorta' thought they would find them last weekend after a bunch of searchers had jumped on board, but it didn't happen. A lot of folks have regular day jobs, so they can only help search on the weekends.

I'm really surprised that there hasn't been any mention of additional surveillance footage in the directions they were thought to have traveled. Gas stations, dollar stores, wal-marts, convenience stores.....any one of them might have video showing the white Hyundai traveling by between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.. Maybe there are just too many small compact white vehicles running around for them to say for certainty if it was them or not, don't know. Maybe they have reviewed them and didn't see anything....just adds to the mystery I guess.

If you get an army of steelmen on RileyT's suggested route, I don't think it would hurt at all, if they knew how to stay safe.

Believe me, if I lived within range of this location, I'd be out walking the road myself this weekend. They've got to be RIGHT THERE, within a dozen miles or so of the casino.

I wouldn't hesitate to get down into the vegetation and kick a few snakes along the way either.

Word. What kind of shoes are best for snake stomping?

Thank you, rosesfromangels, would look great with your solar fan hat.

hmm.

I need something more for snakes.

Have you ever tried to walk very far in a pair of those motocross boots ? The soles are so stiff and rigid it's sort of like trying to walk with a wooden 2 x 4 strapped to your feet, kinda makes you walk like frankenstein.

Thanks for adding the theft of the license plate to the map.
Also, I noticed that you typed (on the map) the 25 year old reported the plate missing around 5, which is about 5 hours after Knutson and Bedwell
left the other casino. Dianna and Cecil left around 2pm, and if the plate was reported missing around 5, well, that's about 3 hours after, not 5.
Not trying to be a pain, just wanting it to reflect what is in MSM.

Findhg, solar fan hat!!! Rofl. Never saw one before. Must get one for DH.

Now back to the search. Here is my less than scientific suggestion. If I were searching and couldn't rappel down a ravine, I would at least try a "stone test". That is throw several heavyish stones in a covered area, and listen for "thuds" or soft landings vs. "clinks" or crashes. Yes, not sophisticated, but useful for the average citizen trying to help with limited equipment.

And, as someone pointed out, searching at dusk with flashlights would have a better chance of catching metal reflection. You can get a very high powered search/flood light for cheap at most home improvement or autozones, etc.

These are great ideas rosesfromangels. I'd never heard of them before. Between you and steelman, a list of to do's and don't on this kind of search, if it doesn't exist, would be valuable.

The biggest *don't* is don't become a victim by getting hit by a car as you search along the side of the road!

The second biggest don't, is don't touch anything if you find something! Call LE immediately.

Crash during search for missing couple and other accidents
by Roadrunner Staff, May 21, '15

"Meanwhile, an unfortunate teen driver happened to smash a car into a tree right where a KUSI-TV crew was interviewing members of Team Amber searching for an Orange County couple..."

...nobody was hurt in a sidebar to the search for missing Orange County Cecil Knutson and Dianna Bedwell, who disappeared from Valley View Casino under mysterious circumstances.

[...the]

crew was interviewing members

[... of the team]

who were forming search parties in the area. As fate would have it, the unidentified teen driver lost control of his vehicle and drove straight into a power pole, knocking it down in front of the TV crew.

Teens, on his cell prior to the crash, was fortunately okay, power was knocked out for some. This happened on Wednesday, at 1 pm, outside the Sheriff's station. That's a bit strange.
