The last 2 miles go down a steep grade. On the side going down which is the side they would drive it drops into a canyon. There are lots of trees at the start of the deep part., there are spotty guard rails but plenty of "holes".
There have been 2 cars found down there from just what I know.
One was a guy who was kidnapped n killed in Escondido by gangs and him n his car was dropped down. It was found by electric workers months later and it took a crane to get the car up from where it was.
The second was someone else who drove off and was found after a while by hikers. I'll see if I can find the articles anywhere. It's been a while.

As for water. Yes Lake Wholfors is right there. But it's pretty dried up. Level to the road and I don't think there is really any area to get near it with a car.
The road is far away from it till you get near the diner and there are parking lots and such that you have to drive down to. I don't see a car ending up in that lake.

I actually found the article of the guy who was killed. I guess his car was found in San Pasqual, and his body found 100ft in the ravine, but San Pasqual is where Valley View is.
But there was a story where a car had to be hoisted up from there with a crane. I'll keep looking for that. Here is the article about the guy though.

Yes, I think in this case we substitute trees and ravine for water, since a water accident seems unlikely. I do understand searching is difficult because there are several routes that could have been taken to get to La Quinta, but perhaps start with the most likely route they would have taken--the most direct without traveling super-winding road. I would think the son and his family would know which way his folks usually drove to get to the son's house. Then, get some teams of motorcycle riders and teams in cars to drive the route as slowly as they can, because if Paul and Dianna went off the road, there will be some kind of disturbance (could be very minor) roadside or just off the shoulder. I realize this disturbance may now be harder to see because of the rains, but if this were my parents, I like to think I'd be walking those highways if that's what it took to find them.

That Paul's cell phone and not Dianna's pinged on a tower to the west is perplexing, and sure adds to the confusion.

tacky IMO but I have no idea how I'd be in this situation... whatever it turns out to be...

I think anytime anyone with a Go Fund Me account uses it for one purpose, but then enters their own financial plight, it muddies the waters. It might make people think twice to donate, because how would they know if that money will go where it is intended, or will it be used on some other financial issue(s)?
That Being Said...
Again Desperate People, Desperate Measures. Maybe the Honesty brought forth is the dying need of Help Me!!! I am desperate!!
And at this point, who knows what anyone would say or do, if they were in This particular situation.
Maybe they have reached Bottom, and the only way Up, is to tell it like it is.
Although i do feel it is tacky as well, I am looking at the totality of everything, and it is all so sad and they must feel Helpless on some level.
There are still search efforts so even if the Go Fund Me doesn't garner as much as they would like, people are still searching for them.
That's a Positive.
My heart aches for them, because I see the desperation...
AND I know they want Dianna and Cecil "Paul" back. And alive!!
IMOO.

I would donate to a search and rescue team or agency but not directly to a family IMO

I say this as when my cousin was missing and found dead due to car accident a week later (car went behind trees) it was hard to scrounge up funeral costs. So IDK.

I'm more inclined to someone following them from the casino, either way it's really sad

That is what I originally thought happened. But I think they would have been found by now if they were carjacked or robbed. And since then we found out they did not win anything that day. So?

Thing is, if they were followed, maybe someone Thought they had money, even if they didn't win.
They had been there before on other occasions, so maybe they were recognized by someone?
Also, the son mentioned that Dianna was wearing jewelry.
And just because they haven't been found yet, doesn't mean they weren't kidnapped, they just haven't been found yet.
IMOO.

If it was a car jacking I feel the car would have been dumped and found by now. JMO.

Unless it was like their son said:

" “They said as result of them not getting a reading the antenna has either been completely severed from the vehicle or buried in something like a parking garage,” Said Acosta."

If the car was in a garage somewhere, or "parted out", who knows when it would be found.
IMOO.

And that would make sense of perhaps why they won't release the video of them leaving the casino.

Searching that many miles of highway without any idea which way they may have gone is going to take a lot of time. I don't know that they are going to be able to find them by just driving up and down the road looking left and right. They may be down in a hole or buried in trees and brush to the point that their vehicle is almost unrecognizable.

Here are some images of vehicles that have run down into ravines for various reasons. In the majority of cases, people SAW the accident as it happened or shortly thereafter, but not all. One lady was trapped in her vehicle for 8 days, upside down and injured, but was alive when rescued. Another young male was trapped in his car for a day or two, but was located by the pings on his phone.

That's what I would call being down in a hole.

cliffravine2.jpg
The car was almost completely concealed by brush.......almost.

cliffravine3.jpg
This car drove off a drop off and landed in a ravine below.

cliffravine4.jpg
Another one where the car was almost concealed. It's going to be hard to see that from the air.

cliffravine5.jpg
This car left the road, went down an embankment and rolled.

I know this is way way far fetched, but allow me to indulge myself for a second - could they have won something else, like a car? No, because we'd have word of that by now I imagine. But it would open up new possibilities. I don't honestly think this at all, but we have to think outside the box at some point ETA: if what has been reported thus far is all deemed true, that is...

No, they looked at their Casino Club Card and determined they had not won anything. They left without cashing in any winnings and without even eating anything. Which I found odd. They would be eligible for some FREE FOOD after playing all morning, imo. And they had to be hungry. Seems weird to me that they did not take a moment to grab a quick snack at least. Especially with the diabetic issues.

More images to give an idea of the various terrain these searchers may encounter while trying to find this vehicle.

cliffwreck1.jpg
In this image, the vehicle is upside down. If searching from the air, and due to the it's color, it almost blends in with the rocks around it. I could see how they might miss this on the first couple of passes or if viewing it from a distance. This looks more like Arizona than it does California, but you get the idea.

cliffwreck2.jpg
Don't know where this happened exactly, but guessing California by the terrain.

cliffwreck3.png
Drove off the road and landed upside down below. As you can see, traffic driving by on the road above may not ever see this vehicle. You would literally have to peer over the edge of the cliff to see it lying below.

cliffwreck4.jpg
I don't know the story behind this one, but I imagine they needed a jib crane to get it out of there.

cliffwreck5.jpg
Another vehicle, partially concealed by brush and trees. This could be another one of those places where the accident is literally right on the side of the road, but unless you go over to the shoulder and peer down, you may never see it.

but how long did it take for each of those cars to be found, Steel? can you give an estimate, based on what was reported on each of those? was it days? weeks? longer?

ETA: Tortilla Flat (your second pic in your recent pic post) is here, in Arizona, and that road there is treacherous!!!! Bikers (motorcycles) like that drive, but it is a lot of hanging over the sides of cliffs, and the road is so very bumpy.

holiday weekend coming... I will have this couple in my thoughts. Please please let there be a break and let these folks be found safe, some how, some way...

The majority of these pictures are file photos from various media sources. A few of them had descriptions along with the photos, but most didn't. I would imagine in probably 90% of them there was a witness to the accident that reported it right after it happened. In some cases, the person in the car may have dialed 911 themselves.

The problem we have with Paul and Dianne's case is that apparently nobody witnessed what became of them OR their car. The main ongoing theory is that they had a traffic accident that wasn't seen by anybody. I posted these pictures in an attempt to show various conditions in which their car may have left the road and not be easily visible to passing traffic.

His phone pinged one time off the Deer Springs cell tower and then never pinged again after that. The GPS system installed in their car is not picking up any kind of signal either. If they were down at the bottom of a ravine or some other kind of steep embankment, it might help explain why there was a loss of cell phone signal. When I initially heard about this, my first reaction was that they had driven off into water, which would go a long way in explaining why all the electronics basically quit working at the same time. After reviewing maps and listening to the locals describe that area however, it seems that driving into a large body of water is almost out of the question. All that would basically be left are creek beds and streams, and I don't know how many of those around there would have enough water in them to submerge a car, probably not many.
