GUILTY CA - Jessica Funk-Haslam, 13, found murdered, Rosemont, 6 March 2012

DNA Solves

So apparently the skateboard rider that was seen on someone's home surveillance video had nothing to do with her murder. I kind of doubt an adult male would have been riding a skateboard.

I bet it is someone Jessica knew that she was meeting at the park. It wouldn't surprise me if this guy just happens to be an RSO.

Showed a picture of the suspect.... youngish looking guy (under 30) with dark hair.

Sheriff -

Dedicated team, they knew this day would come.
While they give all homicides attention, there are some cases that really hit them.
Jessica's murder was one of those cases, it affected her family, the community, the nation.
Initially thought it might be an easy case, but it was a very difficult case with many initial leads being difficult or impossible to resolve.
It was through the support and continued cooperation of Jessica's family, the community, the hundreds of tips they received... the DA's crime lab.

Having DNA evidence, they ran over 60 different DNA tests to try and resolve this case.
Recently they got a match.

DA -

This proves the key role DNA plays in our system.
Without DNA, Jessica's murder would NOT have been solved.

Detective -

Jessica was found dead in a dugout.
Had to work backwards.
Lots of tips right away.
Found out Jessica left her house about 5:30, took light rail and a bus dropped off by the park.
Entered the park around 6:30 in the evening.

Started with friends and associated... with the cooperation of the school district, it's administrators, teachers and kids... we were able to get a lot of things done right away.

Help from lots of officers canvasing the area, well over 200 homes.
School resource officers also incredibly helpful.

Throughout the investigation, you have to exhaust all the leads and that takes time.

Scene was processed, evidence processed immediately, we knew we had foreign DNA.

Cannot discuss where the DNA was found. It was in an area that would be "probative." We felt it was a strong lead.

Run against database, didn't get any hits. Then yesterday we got a hit on it from the crime lab.

Ryan Douglas Roberts - 23 years old from Sacramento.

We understand the impact on the victim's family and now the suspect's family.
We have had great cooperation from the family of the suspect.

Encourage anyone who has information about the suspect or anyone connected to him, to call.
We are interested in finding out, just as we did about Jessica's movements.

I missed some of it.

The information we have says he had frequented the park in the past.
Only suspect at this time.
He was arrested for domestic violence in May 2013, that's how we got the DNA.
They will now go back to Jessica's friends/family, people who frequented the park.
To see if they have any knowledge of this person.

His reaction was pretty calm when they contacted him. He didn't show surprise, fear, didn't show emotion.
We did talk to him and because of the evidence and our conversation we felt the case was very strong.

Charge is MURDER.

So so glad to see this! Was afraid that Jessica would never get justice.

Prayers to her family.

I am so happy to see justice for this young lady.

It’s because of Proposition 69 that investigators took Ryan Roberts’ DNA after his May arrest in a domestic violence case.

It came back on Wednesday as a positive match to the DNA found on Jessica’s body.

Investigators didn’t have a name, a face, or even a suspect description. All they had was that DNA.

I can't help but wonder if LE is now trying to match his DNA with other unsolved murders/attacks/etc...

So his next court date is TODAY!

At 1:30 p.m....

wonder how that turns out?

ineligible for bail?

I don't remember ever seeing that!

Why is he ineligible? (Of course I agree with it.... Just don't know what that means in a legal sense?)

TIA...:seeya:

I'm so glad that this guy was arrested. The article below shows how close he got to getting away with murder. Thank goodness the wife turned him in, even though they let him go.

"She says Roberts brutally attacked and choked her back in May.

“All of a sudden he just got angry and irate.”

She says it happened at a rec area in Fair Oaks.

“He said he was going to break my neck, and he tried, and then he raped me two times.”

Lynn says she called deputies, but after investigating, they said there wasn’t enough evidence for an arrest."

The above is a clip from this article:

Or maybe random. If she was hanging around in the park late, and this guy just happened to be there.
