What I don't understand is what was DG doing with the false ID in 2014 to begin with? He was arrested in 1999 while living under that false identity. To our knowledge, he hasn't legally changed his name so how was that ID not taken away from him in 1999 when his true identity was discovered? Or was it taken away and he created another set of documentation? And whose "stolen" credit card did he have? A card in the name of the deceased child wouldn't be considered "stolen" IMO.

True enough. Where did the info regarding cheating and leaving without graduating come from? That info has been kicking around so long that I never questioned the validity of it.

I tried searching for it but I clearly have no talent for searching the threads.
I just want to point out that if he really did lack a diploma, it's supreme irony because among other duties, a lab's QA Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the lab staff are properly qualified.

That is the ramp that we take into Airdrie when we go into the city from our house. There are some RV sales places there and I can't really remember what else. I will look into it though. I am wondering though if the police blocked it off on ajuly 19th why is this article only released on the 24th?

Thanks sublimemumma, I'm so curious what's there now! I Google mapped and tried to go down the road to look at the businesses and buildings as the article only says what business *used* to be there so it was hard to figure out where on the road this was. I think it might've been 61 East Lake Ramp NE, and I think there's some sort of RV businesses there for sure. Not sure about the articles dates, the funny thing is I read the article and then happened to read the photo caption and that's where the most interesting information was!

Just to address the fact that we have so little information on DG, I am drawn back to the "perp walk" video. I was trying to read his face and body language in the video of him being escorted by LE to the arrest processing unit. (the reporter's questions are no longer audible, but are mentioned in print).

I can't decide if he looked guilty, humiliated, angry or terrified.

Are there any members with experience in recognizing body language signs? I thought it would be interesting to hear some "qualified" views on this. I realize that this is a controversial area but I do find it interesting.

In a complaint to Calgary's chief of police, the Criminal Defence Lawyers' Association expressed "profound revulsion" with what it describes as a "media circus."

For one minute and 17 seconds, Garland was walked handcuffed, with his head down as reporters peppered him with such questions as, "Mr. Garland, can you tell us what happened to Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents?"

Pure and *total* speculation - Perhaps he took ID and credit cards belonging to the Liknes's (not sure if they had CC's after a bankruptcy) in order to fabricate a story that they just disappeared? Stolen ID and plastic taken to steal AL's identity for example, would be solid evidence and certainly fall in DG's MO.

61 east lake ramp is for sure a Western RV. I was also trying to think of what would be there that
Would of been a car sales lot... I know there is a green house, vet clinic, subway and at least one RV place... The RV place would make most sense I believe.

If LE were searching a possible RV business (not confirmed) on East Ramp Lake for the bodies, why there? If it's an open, operating business?? Unless it's a warehouse/storage building for RVs…. I find the fact that they searched there extremely strange.

I transcribed the perp walk video but I have a different reference. It's #57 on Page 3 of Media, Maps and Timelines. JMO, but I think he just looked angry.

Yes, I thought maybe either a used car sales lot or RV business. An RV involvement could definitely open up a can of worms in this case.

I have a question re first and second degree murder charges.
If intent can be formed in an instant--long enough to decide whether to kill or to walk away--shouldn't Nathan's presumed murder also be tried as first degree?

I have never followed a case before in Canada so I am wondering is it the norm to have so little updates since after the arrest. I find it quite odd that there is no interviews with neighbors of DG, school mates, former colleagues and so on. Is it the norm to have leaks in a case? Just find it disarming such silence from all aspects.

There is also a Chrysler, Dodge dealership just down the road from there as well

The general consensus amongst couple colleagues I spoke to was that he was angry, defiant and arrogant. Of course that was based on no words spoken. We have to take in consideration that he was likely furious about the perp-walk thus making it difficult to distinguish that anger from arrest anger.

I have a question re first and second degree murder charges.

I think because he did not know NO was there or have motive to seek NO out and kill him. LE wants a case with no reasonable doubt, first degree with NO leaves doubt. JMO

Possible, but it is my understanding that the reason he was arrested the first time in July was because LE found the ID of the deceased child on him (the same ID he used for 7 years running from his drug charges until arrest in 1999) and a "stolen" credit card. So, how and why did he still have that ID? It should have been taken away in 1999. Does he forge documents or have access to someone who does?

It would be my speculation, that the Crown is careful in choosing the charges based on evidence and also what they feel a jury will convict.

If I was arrested for a crime I did not commit I would be pleading with anyone and everyone that I was innocent. It would have been a perfect opportunity to plead innocence with the media there especially with the questions being asked by the reporter. I would have answered with a passionate response of innocence. I agree, I saw anger, defiance and arrogance as well.

This whole case is not normal and very odd. Especially when it comes to the information we are given and the information we are not given. The fact we are not given any details on DG or hearing anyone describe him. JMO

He was probably advised from his lawyer not to comment either way. Reporters can take your comments many ways so he was probably advised not to speak. JMO
