maybe they're checking to see if someone has stayed there recently?
One would have to assume LE were given the keys to the home-condo by the family. IMO I don't think LE is looking for evidence that anyone who would have stayed there recently but you never know since we don't know the whole picture although LE did say they are not looking for additional suspects in Mexico. I would think they are looking for paperwork and financial links (bank accounts, bank statements, business records, deeds, legal docs etc).

I query whether JO accompanied LE to Mexico to assist LE with matters due to a personal and first hand basis knowing her parents and being next of kin and likely power of attorney if they needed access to bank details and accounts, safety deposit box in Mexico???

I don't know how it works in criminal court, would his lawyer not be in receipt of a preliminary brief prior to the Aug 14 appearance?

you left out half eaten burritos and dna

I'm sure that, in a case such as this with no bodies, LE must be beyond meticulous in their investigation thus personally conducting the investigation and any searches in Mexico. There is a perception of Mexican law enforcement that isn't entirely favourable. I'm sure the crown and LE want to leave as little room for hole poking and reasonable doubt as possible.

Certainly but then there is risk of making this a political issue.
What I'm thinking of is that there would have to be something significant in order for LE to enter a foreign jurisdiction along with stepping on thier toes and demonstrating a lack of faith in thier legal processes.

Like the CPS conducting the search though in RCMP jurisdiction, they could be conducting the search with the permission of the Mexican authorities.

Maybe its a key ring?

sure, a ring is a ring is a ring,,

I always carry my keys on my ring finger, especially when carrying key-rings when I'm off to jail in a city where I have no use for keys.

I'm being sarcastic.

it could be an elastic or string to remind him to look over his shoulder more often.

As smart as DG is, he is a twit of a criminal prior to these murders,, he's almost too academic in some of the planning and pure buffoon in the execution. An overthinker

a good chunk of mexico's o&g development money comes from the alberta government, and Canada is possibly the largest tourist nationality there,, we have clout.

I'm wondering if disclosure can occur in stages. I mean they aren't going to stop investigating just because disclosure is due, I'm sure that they can add to it as necessary.

I'm thinking disclosure would be of evidence leading to the charges.
On technicality, would anything newer not be disqualified?

Are there any links stating the JO has power of attorney for her parents? I would think it more likely that whoever was named as executor of the estate would accompany police, or would be able to grant any authority needed by CPS to conduct their search. More likely, as stated up-thread, CPS forensic accountants were following the money and found leads worth following up. JMO

Investigation and relevant disclosure can be ongoing right up until trial.

FWIW here is a transcript of a CBC story on CPS in Mexico.

Nathan O'Brien investigation expands to Mexico

Transcript of CBC news report regarding the Calgary Police Service sending investigators to Mexico.
This is not an official draft, and is not connected to any of the participants.
This is a rough draft, and alll errors are my own.

News Anchor: Police in Calgary have taken their investigation of the disappearance of an Alberta couple and their grandson outside Canada's borders. Kathy and Alvin Liknes and their five year old boy vanished in June. A suspect has been charged with homicide in the case even though their bodies have never been found. The CBC's Carolyn Dunn is in Calgary with the latest.

Reporter, Carolyn Dunn: We know that Calgary Police are confirming their investigation into the Liknes/O'Brien murders has taken them to Mexico. And specifically to one property that they are searching there.

Here's what we don't know: Where is that property?
Who owns that property? and
What are police specifically looking for?

They're being very tight-lipped about that part of the developing investigation.

But, you know, a Mexico connection has come up previous to this. Alvin and Kathy Liknes were just about to retire, or, at least, spend part of their year in Mexico, and we're not sure if that is what the connection is. Police investigators determined that the Likneses and their five year old grandson, Nathan O'Brien, were dead--in part because of signs of a violent incident at the Liknes home right after a moving sale that was preparing them to move to Mexico. But, an exhaustive search of the entire area around the Liknes home, a lot of the Airdrie area where the Garland family farm is has turned up no bodies, and so that is, obviously, part of what the police continue to investigate this many weeks later.

It's very early in the justice process in such a complicated murder case. Including, where there are no bodies do date anyway. He's expected to be back in court in less than two weeks, on the 14th. In the meantime, authorities have put him on a suicide watch. And, the investigation, as we are told, continues while he is in custody.

I agree. I think this whole case is about money. You know, money IS the root of all evil.

Could be, though I think pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth could give obsessive greed a run for its money when it comes to destruction and homicide.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1 Timothy 6:10)
