Calgary’s Police Chief is skeptical a large reward will help drum up leads in a bizarre missing persons case. [...] Police Chief Rick Hanson a reward will bring in more tips, but that doesn’t mean they’re helpful.

“If there’s a lot of money that’s created for a reward, frequently it increases the workload because you’ve got all kinds of people that step forward with information that may not even be related to it.”

http://www.inews880.com/2014/07/02/big-reward-not-likely-to-yield-big-results-in-amber-alert-case/

They ultimately decided not to offer a reward to keep the quality of the information coming in high. LE has already had to deal with misinformation (e.g., that AL was sighted in Brooks, which was found to be unfounded https://twitter.com/dcrHerald/status/485876840842543104/photo/1) Imagine if every Tom Dick and Harry started offering "tips" because they saw the reward as a $100k lotto...

Garland v. M.N.R., 2005 TCC 176

2005-03-03
Docket: 2004-3281(CPP)
2004-3282(EI)
BETWEEN:
DOUGLAS R. GARLAND,
Appellant,
and
THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL REVENUE,
Respondent.
____________________________________________________________________
Appeals heard on February 11, 2005, at Calgary, Alberta, by
The Honourable Justice Campbell J. Miller
Appearances:
For the Appellant:The Appellant himself
Counsel for the Respondent:Scott McDougall

In 1992, they raided Mr. Garland's parents' farm. Mr. Garland was charged with an offence under, he believes, the Food and Drug Act. He was released on bail. At this point he acknowledged that he made some not very well thought out decisions. He skipped the province of Alberta and moved to Vancouver. He assumed the name of a deceased individual, Matthew Hartley. In May 1993 he applied for a SIN under this assumed name. He had his own SIN in his own name since 1980. He also applied for a driver's license under the name Matthew Hartley. Indeed, Mr. Garland conducted all his activities in Vancouver under the name Matthew Hartley.

Ahhhh..........so then if it's being reported that they're still looking for the green truck obviously the one they picked up from G property was not the same one..........so does that mean he's truly not even involved?

I think it might mean that they are not sure whether the green truck LE impounded is the truck they are looking for. If the truck is identified as the vehicle, the game changes. The Amber Alert will continue until, IIRC, Nathan if found.

I'd like to draw out a family tree. This is getting confusing to see who is related to who and who married / divorced who and how it is all related. I had a feeling right at the time of the family press conference that the family knew more than what was stated. JO seemed to be in too much of a trance and did not seem to have the appropriate emotional response like what RO had. I think they knew a lot more at the time of the press conference. I hope we will learn a lot more in the next week.

On another note, I went to high school with JN, the neighbour. His place was the last place on our bus route and he is still living at the same family farm. JN was 2 years younger than me, and no one from the property in question rode the bus with me during the time I rode the bus, so it means that DG would be at least 5 to 6 years older the JN. For that reason, I don't think it is unreasonable for them to have lived as neighbours for 40+ years and not really know DG, especially given JN's career and being on the road so much, and DG living in Vancouver for so many years. I have looked through all my high school year books and have found no reference to the G last name.

On the last thread, there was some mention about AL and his patent for some process in oil and gas and that another company has registered another patent based on AL's patent and since then AL has registered a couple of other patents. The basic theory being that there could be a dispute over the patent. I can't find reference to those patents again, but I was thinking if those patents have anything to do with what DG's business does and if there isn't something that might be linked between the patents and the businesses. The whole think about "following the money" always seems to be the reason for incidences like this, so could there be a link between the patents and businesses? Who ever posted about the patents, could you look into a possibility of a link?

Here's some info I found registered to the property:

1260655 ALBERTA LTD. Numbered Alberta Corporation Incorporated 2006 AUG 09 Registered Address: 123 38A AVE SW, CALGARY ALBERTA, T2S 0W3. No: 2012606550

I wonder during those years if he was in contact with his family and whether they were aware of this? Maybe and this is totally speculating here, AL was threatening DG regarding this new evidence?

I know I saw that AL and POI had a business that failed, now I can't find it...was it the reporter this afternoon ? TIA

This is my first time posting so I apologize if I break any rules.. Just curious if anybody knows if AL claimed bankruptcy on a business or whether it was a personal claim? I forget where I read it but I'd seen that AL and DG were in business together at one point. Is it possible that the bankruptcy claim was filed against that company, leaving DG with nothing? Judging by the properties AL and KL own, I'm assuming they're fairly well off, despite having claimed bankruptcy. Perhaps DG was angry that AL walked away ok and he himself was left with "nothing". Just a thought!

I wonder if he was receiving government cheques under the assumed name, since he worked under the assumed name and all the benefits were in the assumed name. It sounds like it was a real mess to sort out, and maybe he didn't completely sort it out, or perhaps he found a legal loophole for using an assumed name?

Not sure but one article stated the child died in 1980. DG would have been 20 at the time of the accident and likely attending the U of A.

Interesting to note and hope it's ok to post as his name is connected to this case and is in the MSM now. The young man of whom DG stole his identity from passed away Oct. 30/80 and sadly his sister who was 21 months younger then him died the previous day Oct. 29/80. Those poor parents, losing two children at once, so heartbreaking.

Wasn't it KL that claimed bankruptcy and not AL? I don't remember seeing where he had claimed bankruptcy. I though it was KL and RO that had individually claimed bankruptcy a few years back?

Swedie, it is my understanding the two children died due to a vehicle accident caused by DG. Can anyone confirm this please. Thanks

That information was introduced by a reporter at the first press conference for the case. Apparently the couple had declared bankruptcy two years ago.

I thought the same. Also one of AL's businesses went into bankruptcy but I do not recall anything about AL going into personnel bankruptcy. The info about KL and JO was during the presser where Nathan's parents spoke and it was in response to a question one of the reporters asked

Yes true I realized this and edited my post thank you. Has it been confirmed DG caused the accident? I haven't hear that yet, only assumptions.

Ummm....what did DG do for a living? These are what, machine tools for grinding and sawing?? He seems to need manuals. When you are selling things manuals are a good thing to have. Wonder if he obtained these tools legitimately?
