I wonder if he was engaged in his evil activities until there was too much daylight light to notice that the light had been left on. After all, he tidied up the water hose.

How do we know he used the water hose?? Maybe I missed that. Do you have a link?

Would it have been possible for DG to dispose of bodies in the Effluent Storage Cell in Crossfield, AB?

Bodies of water around the farm are sloughs where the water levels vary annually. I don't think that would be a smart place to hide a body. I would agree with the RCMP that the victims could be under rocks, or in a ditch, in a field, at a former high school party spot, in the most obvious spot ... where is that?

Surely if the bodies were dumped there would be ravens to tell the tale. Everyone in Alberta was aware of the missing people. Especially the farmers would know to check for any raven activity.

I thought I would take a look at the idea that there was a connection between AL's patent and DG. But looking at AL's patent, it's all engineering and no chemistry. So I wonder where the link is?

AL's patent was a sort of pump that removed water from oil wells (a frequent problem in Albert, IIRC). Separating oil from water, the problem appears to be.

But isn't acidizing used, as well, for this purpose?

I will be the first to admit I know nothing about the topic, but I will bet that some WS's are right up on this.

I have not seen the particular patent (should check it :) but generally separation of oil and water is based on their different specific gravity - there is various equipment used for separation. The problems is with emulsions - ie stable small droplets. Ultrafiltration membranes can separate emulsified oil droplets from water. Chemical treatment includes addition of acid (either with polymer or salt) to break the emulsion. So - yes, there can be chemistry involved but I would still be surprised if DG was involved in depth.

There is some reason why they were removed from the home. Now what was it?

I think his original plan was to make them disappear. And I still believe he thinks with no bodies he has a chance of getting away with it. If it wasn't for the camera (which I don't believe he knew about) would they even have a suspect? NO put a wrench in his plan.

Thanks, I am glad to know this information. I was trying to figure out if DG had given some sort of chemistry knowledge or proprietary information to AL for the patent, but I can't think how it relates, other than something along the lines that you have suggested.

I appreciate the info given by garbagetweet as well; I too have been pondering that. The idea behind the patent doesn't seem like it would need special chemical knowledge - I would think a petroleum engineer with years of experience would be able to come up with that design. .... Unless AL and DG never actually got around to producing a new design together.

I've been wondering whether we know for sure that the antipathy between the two really did stem from a patent dispute. I know that was reported in the press, but the last I saw the police said it was a past business dispute. I wonder whether the problem might have come about during the Calcap Investments years.

DG risked more by taking the victims away with him. He could have been discovered in the process and also planted dna evidence in the truck and elsewhere. For a supposedly smart man, why didn't DG just park the truck down the block, walk to the house, shoot them and calmly walk back to the truck?

Exactly! Would have been perfect since 200 people were there on the weekend. My guess is 3 things: 1) He was making it look like a domestic crime and AL/KL took off. Not knowing NO would be there. 2) Went over to talk, things turned bad and he panicked in taking the bodies. 3) He was leaving his mark with this family by taking them, like he thought if you are planning on moving and disappearing let me help you out, kind of thing. I don't think we know that 100%, we just know it looks like the drag marks were cleaned up as best he could in the dark.

I keep finding it strange that a grown adult is using his dad's email address. My elementary aged kids have their own for goodness sakes. Also, no cell phone number ... 948 is an Airdrie area land line exchange that's been around for a long time.

Perhaps he took up an email address in his father's name. We know he is an identity thief. Perhaps his way of flying under the radar? He has no internet presence whatsoever.

I can't recall but I don't *think* I've seen this yet.
What if DG HAD to take either AL or KL with him, away from the property for some reason? To retrieve something... show them something..?
It would have been so much easier to fake a CO2 poisoning, or like someone above just said, walk in, shoot them and walk away.

There is some reason why they were removed from the home. Now what was it?

Yes. If it was a question of just removing the bodies that might carry his DNA, all he would have had to do beforehand was order in some tyvek suits or something like (available online) and spill booties (also available online) to cover his clothes and shoes. Latex and nitrile gloves are easily available as well. Especially for someone who worked in a lab and would know suppliers of such. Then park in the lane after dark, slip into them, and walk into the house.

Although if he had to rely on them letting him in, that wouldn't have worked. They surely would have wondered why he was in that kind of get-up. But if he did enter on the sly and surprised them, it would not have mattered what he was wearing.

I just took a closer look at some of the patents and the dewatering patent (2000 or 2002) is not really what I was thinking of when I quickly scanned it at first. The later patents, 2010 and 2013, for pumps is something that I could see a synergy between AL and that Ranchland Equipment company.

I posted the patent the night before last. It's somewhere up this thread.

In the year 2000 Douglas Garland was sentenced to 39 months in prison. He served six months.
Also that year, this company appears in his name: http://wikiparts.com/index2.php?opt...id=22&Itemid=103&distributor_id=7752&pdf=lite
So either he did it before he went into jail or after he got out. Hard to say. He could have even done it while in jail.
The company's name is Ranchland Equipment Ltd, is based at his parents' farm, and does the following:
Key Products / Services:
Bearings; Power Transmission ( Belts, Bushings, Chain, Couplings, Pulleys,
Sprockets, Etc. ); Electric motors; Electrical components; Gear reducers; Maintenance
products; Seals; Heavy Equipment Parts; Hydraulics
Description of Services:
Machine tool repair, Development, and Prototypes

That same year, AL is most likely working on his patent "Method and apparatus for removing water from well-bore of gas wells to permit efficient production of gas"
CA 2350453 C
because the patent for that was filed in 2001
http://www.google.com/patents/CA2350453C?cl=en

(AL also filed another patent in 2011 http://wikiparts.com/index2.php?opt...id=22&Itemid=103&distributor_id=7752&pdf=lite)

Given that DG's company stated it worked on hydraulics, seals, developments and prototypes, I would say that these things are all in common with AL's patent for 2001.

Awh, good catch. It was mentioned by a firsttime poster, and resident of Calgary, that an apparent and assumed attempt had been made to hose down the sidewalk. The water hose was coiled and in its place. See thread #3, post number 317.

It's actually KathYRN but I see what you are trying to say and I think it's all of the above. I do think he thought he would not get caught and this would be 'the perfect crime'.

If NO wasn't in the picture, it just might have been 'the perfect crime.'
