Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice says one of the deceased in Friday’s bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos was misidentified.

The ministry says the body of Parker Tobin was mistaken for that of Xavier Labelle — Labelle is injured but alive, and Tobin is among the 15 people who died when the bus carrying the junior hockey team collided with a semi truck in northeastern Saskatchewan.

Most of the scene of the Humboldt Broncos crash was cleared overnight and should reopen today. Known as Armley Corner, local first responders say it’s a trouble spot for collisions. Six crosses from a previous crash sit at the corner. #HumboldtStrong

Here is one of the photo's, it's from ground level, and gives a better perspective of that corner with the trees, stop sign, and if you zoom in you can see the signs that show North (left), East (straight), South (right).

Oh now I see the flashing lights . I wonder if it was working. I don't see lighting on the roads -- making it darker. If the light was working that makes the accident more confusing.

The red light makes a difference IMO as far as visual stuff

I also wonder if this was a new route for him?

Id however think from pics and stuff that it would be easy in that environment to just keep zooming along or losing some situational awareness.

I am wondering about some distraction as well.

If you look at the marks in the road they start dead center with no skid marks so appears like it was a total surprise to both drivers.

In that kind of dark environment tho it would seem headlights would alert at some point in advance - just because it was so dark?

Does anyone in the area know if the road the truck was on has like no stops for miles and miles or are there stops. That would increase awareness IMO.

Does not change anything but in some way I hope to learn the truck driver had not driven that route often.

It would also be interesting to know if trucker was running late.

I think I am trying to come up with contributory factors -- dont really want to believe it was just a blatant choice to barrel through -- the flashing red light - if working - is bothersome however.

At some level the limited info is also baffling - they were able to talk to the trucker- so in terms of investigation it would really be more of validating his recollection of events.

I also wonder how long he was interviewed.

THIS is horrid on a whole bunch of levels - not ok imo

I was just coming to post about the mix up...

BREAKING: Coroner's office says they misidentified two victims. Tragically Parker Tobin, previously believed alive, is one of the deceased.

This means Xavier Labelle, previously thought dead by his family, is ALIVE. #HumboldtBroncos

The sad part about this is... how badly injured is Xavier Labelle that they couldn't tell who he was? or Parker's parents not know? crazy :(

Another press conference shortly....@ 9am

ETA: 9 am MT/CT (11 a.m. ET)

FYI Newstalk 1010 in Toronto is reporting (via CBC) that the transport truck was actually travelling AHEAD of the bus, vs heading west as has been reported. This raises the possibility that the bus hit the truck from behind, perhaps as the truck was turning left (west)?. I certainly hope investigators are able to determine what caused this terrible accident. Link to the report is below

If I have it correct one of these three is Xavier...that was misidentified, so one of these 3 is actually alive but still in hospital, not sure of his condition.

:candle:

RIP Parker Tobin

From the link: In Friday's crash we've heard suggestions the truck may have t-boned the bus, but the father of a surviving player claimed to CBC the transport truck was ahead of the team charter before the impact.

IMHO, the father is incorrect. I believe the truck was traveling west, ran the stop sign and was already in the intersection when the bus hit it.

Thanks, I had assumed that is the correct version also, but we will have to wait and see what the crash investigators conclude.

When I first saw daylight photos of the scene, my first thought was that the intersection played a crucial role but then the positions of the vehicles seemed odd for that and now with this statement from a player's father...well, is it possible that both vehicles were traveling in the same direction at high speed with the truck in front? Then the truck or it's trailer hit some loose gravel leading to over correction and jackknifing? If you are traveling only 2 or 3 seconds behind a jack-knifed trailer, collision is almost unavoidable.

Such a tragic loss of life...

One of the many articles I read this morning said the trauma both boys suffered was traumatic, both had dyed blonde hair and athletic builds.

I need to look for the link but there was an article yesterday that identified the site where the trucker picked up his load. IIRC, it was northeast of the accident site.

ETA:
Marc Beland, a spokesman with Premier Tech, confirmed on Sunday that the semi involved in the crash had been hauling a load from his company’s facility in nearby Carrot River. Premier Tech doesn’t have its own truck fleet, and Mr. Beland declined to identify the driver or contractor involved, but to say that Premier Tech is working with investigators and wants to support the community any way it can.

humm it was really hard to put it together but I would think since there were survivors we would have heard more

along these lines

and the driver being able to talk I would think would clear this up??

BUT from link

Crash scene photos appear to show little damage to the truck's cab while the front of the bus looks like it was torn off. Every single person on the bus was either hurt or killed, but the truck driver was not hurt.

I suppose the bus could have actually impacted the trailer itself which might also explain the intensity of the trailer velocity (being flipped on its back. )

Confirmed: one survivor paralyzed from waist down. Amazing outlook and new goals for him!!
Paralyzed Bronco Ryan Straschnitzki refuses to give up on hockey dream

"Just hours after emerging from surgery, Ryan Straschnitzki was making plans to overcome the fact that he will never walk again.

He intends to get back on the ice.

The 18-year-old Humboldt Broncos defenceman, who broke his back in a team bus crash that killed 15 others, underwent a successful surgery Saturday that lasted close to seven hours, his father, Tom, said. At 11 a.m., the family was told Straschnitzki would be paralyzed from the chest down but able to move his arms and head...
