"truck was in front of the bus"

perception is interesting...

here's mine:
truck was in front of the bus (bus travelling north on hwy #35) as the truck ran the stop sign (truck driving west) on hwy #335...

ETA: from early on the word "t-boned" was used - HTH

Thank you.

If he was traveling north (in front of the bus) he was lost. Until we hear proof otherwise I'll continue to believe the bus was traveling west (as shown on your map).

moo

Agreed. Judging from the position of and damage to the vehicles, tire marks, and direction of the debris field I suspect that the bus probably impacted the transport behind the cab somewhere around the middle of the front flatbed. Therefore no damage to the truck cab but complete devastation of the front end of the bus. The flatbed looks pretty compressed behind the front tires of the flatbed. I think the question will be did the truck run through the stop sign, or did it stop and then drive forward through the intersection thinking it was clear and not seeing the approaching bus. The truck doesn't appear to be that far from the actual intersection, leading me to wonder if the truck was moving fairly slowly through the intersection.

My heart goes out to all those impacted by this tragedy. Those first responders and medical personnel are heroes in my book.

I'm sure you are right. I think the early t-bone reports are incorrect. If the truck t-boned the bus one would certainly think there would be more damage to the truck cab, and possible injuries to the truck driver. So I don't think that is what happened.

Fields are still snow covered in these parts....

It is totally possible the truck did stop and proceed into the intersection, not seeing the WHITE bus.

It makes the most sense.

No one in their right mind would intentionally pull out in front of a bus moving at 100 km/h.

Still unfathomable.

T-bone
ˈtēˌbōn
past tense: T-boned; past participle: T-boned
crash head-on into the side of (another vehicle).
"his car rolled over and was T-boned by an oncoming vehicle"

The truck did not t-bone the bus....

Rather the bus t-boned the truck because the truck appeared right in front of the bus, as the truck crossed hwy #35.

ETA: That's my guess....based at what i've gleaned

The truck would have either been going straight on hwy #335 or turning south / left onto hwy #35.

I agree tarabull. I wonder if the bus had operable daytime running lights, which I believe are mandatory in Sask for vehicles manufactured after 1989 (which I assume the bus was). Not saying they would have prevented the accident, but nevertheless could be a factor.

Didn't the bus have the right of way, and the truck had the stop sign? That's what I thought I had read today.

Anyhoo, the Halifax Mooseheads held a tribute to those who lost their lives in the crash, #HumboldtStrong http://www.metronews.ca/news/halifa...ockey-reacts-to-humboldt-broncos-tragedy.html

Oh now I see the flashing lights . I wonder if it was working. I don't see lighting on the roads -- making it darker. If the light was working that makes the accident more confusing.

The red light makes a difference IMO as far as visual stuff

I also wonder if this was a new route for him?

Id however think from pics and stuff that it would be easy in that environment to just keep zooming along or losing some situational awareness.

I am wondering about some distraction as well.

If you look at the marks in the road they start dead center with no skid marks so appears like it was a total surprise to both drivers.

In that kind of dark environment tho it would seem headlights would alert at some point in advance - just because it was so dark?

Does anyone in the area know if the road the truck was on has like no stops for miles and miles or are there stops. That would increase awareness IMO.

Does not change anything but in some way I hope to learn the truck driver had not driven that route often.

It would also be interesting to know if trucker was running late.

I think I am trying to come up with contributory factors -- dont really want to believe it was just a blatant choice to barrel through -- the flashing red light - if working - is bothersome however.

At some level the limited info is also baffling - they were able to talk to the trucker- so in terms of investigation it would really be more of validating his recollection of events.

I also wonder how long he was interviewed.

Hey C, whats up?
Just wanted to point out that the accident happened at about 5pm, so it was not dark out whatsoever. In fact quite the opposite, as the sun glare could most definitely have been a contributing factor. Anyone who has travelled those prairie highways especially in the winter could tell you the sun glare can be blinding.

If I have it correct one of these three is Xavier...that was misidentified, so one of these 3 is actually alive but still in hospital, not sure of his condition.

RIP Parker Tobin

:rose:

:tears:

Yes, i believe that is Xavier on the right. So scary. I just heard Tobin's parents were actually with Xavier thinking it was their son while their son had actually passed but was misidentified as Xavier. God bless them all.

The outpouring of support has been incredible. Almost everyone in the province has a connection to hockey, and is used to travelling long hours on the highways for sports or to visit family. 'Drive safe' is a goodbye and prayer here and this accident is everyone's worst nightmare.

I, too believe by looking at the trailer chassis, that the bus t-bone the trailer. This decimated the front of the bus.

Confirmed: one survivor paralyzed from waist down. Amazing outlook and new goals for him!!
Paralyzed Bronco Ryan Straschnitzki refuses to give up on hockey dream

"Just hours after emerging from surgery, Ryan Straschnitzki was making plans to overcome the fact that he will never walk again.

He intends to get back on the ice.

The 18-year-old Humboldt Broncos defenceman, who broke his back in a team bus crash that killed 15 others, underwent a successful surgery Saturday that lasted close to seven hours, his father, Tom, said. At 11 a.m., the family was told Straschnitzki would be paralyzed from the chest down but able to move his arms and head...

It is tough becoming disabled so young especially when you were so active. I wish Ryan the very best and hope he receives the best rehabilitation and counselling available. I hope some of the money raised helps him with housing adaptions and new transport etc.

Heartbreaking.

Completely agree with this.
