Betty Forsyth, 94, identified as one of the victims of the van rampage

The nephew of Betty Forsyth, 94, said he identified his aunt to the coroner as a victim of Monday’s van rampage.

Forsyth’s nephew, Rob Forsyth, told the Star he and one of his friends who knew the 94-year-old recognized her hair colour and her facial features. He added that at the moment his aunt is listed as unidentified victim “number 6” and that the coroner is waiting to confirm his aunt’s identify based on dental records.

Rob Forsyth said his aunt’s walker was found on Yonge St. nearby her apartment building at 5430 Yonge St., a Toronto Community Housing building for seniors.

I have read a lot of talk here about schizophrenic/bi-polar people, and how they are NOT more likely to be violent, but are more likely to be victimized. And I don't know, maybe the statistics bare that out?

Yes. People with mental illnesses are more likely to be victims. The studies bear that out.

Do you have any links to such studies? Thanks

No problem. Thanks for asking. I hope you are sincere in your interest and will read them.

The Myth That Mental Illness Causes Mass Shootings
In their 2016 edited book Gun Violence and Mental Illness, psychiatrists Liza Gold and Robert Simon summarize the evidence debunking the myth that mental illness is a leading cause of gun violence. As they report, less than 5% of shootings are committed by people with a diagnosable mental illness. Like mentally healthy offenders, the mentally ill are far more likely to shoot people they know rather than strangers. The mentally ill are also far more likely to be victims of gun violence rather than perpetrators. These data suggest that the link between mental illness and mass shooting exists in our minds, not in reality.

Perpetuating the myth that mental illness is the cause of mass shootings only serves to stigmatize the mentally ill even further. In addition, it distracts from the more difficult conversation that must be had over gun-control in America.

The Myth of Violence and Mental Illness
Does Mental Illness Cause Violence?
Mental illness plays no part in the majority of violent crimes committed in our society. The assumption that any and every mental illness carries with it an almost certain potential for violence has been proven wrong in many studies.

Current research shows that people with major mental illness are 2.5 times more likely to be the victims of violence than other members of society. This most often occurs when such factors as poverty, transient lifestyle and substance use are present. Any of these factors make a person with mental illness more vulnerable to assault and the possibility of becoming violent in response.

Mental Health Myths and Facts
Myth: People with mental health problems are violent and unpredictable.

Fact: The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population. You probably know someone with a mental health problem and don't even realize it, because many people with mental health problems are highly active and productive members of our communities.

Post by Former NIMH Director Thomas Insel: Understanding Severe Mental Illness
Is violence more common in people with SMI? Yes, during an episode of psychosis, especially psychosis associated with paranoia and so-called “command hallucinations”, the risk of violence is increased. People with SMI are up to three times more likely to be violent and when associated with substance abuse disorders, the risk may increase much further.

But, mental illness contributes very little to the overall rate of violence in the community. Most people with SMI are not violent, and most violent acts are not committed by people with SMI. In fact, people with SMI are actually at higher risk of being victims of violence than perpetrators. Teplin et al found that those with SMI are 11 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population.

Study Shows Mentally Ill More Likely to Be Victims, Not Perpetrators, of Violence

New research shows that almost one-third of adults with mental illness are likely to be victims of violence within a six-month period, and that adults with mental illness who commit violence are most likely to do so in residential settings. The study also finds a strong correlation between being a victim of violence and committing a violent act.

The work was done by researchers at North Carolina State University; RTI International; the University of California, Davis; Simon Fraser University; and Duke University.

Facts About Mental Illness and Violence

Here is what researchers say about the link between mental illness and violence:

- "Although studies suggest a link between mental illnesses and violence, the contribution of people with mental illnesses to overall rates of violence is small, and further, the magnitude of the relationship is greatly exaggerated in the minds of the general population (Institute of Medicine, 2006)."

-

-"People with psychiatric disabilities are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violent crime (Appleby, et al., 2001). People with severe mental illnesses, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or psychosis, are 2 ½ times more likely to be attacked, raped or mugged than the general population (Hiday, et al.,1999)."

I agree this has shades of Elliot Rodger. Alek Minassian is an injustice collector.

From the CBC link, he has lots of issues of social alienation and social isolation issues like Rodger.

Injustice Collectors

1.) Injustice Collectors are convinced that they are never wrong. How is it possible that they are never wrong? It is simple: They are always right.

2.) Injustice Collectors never apologize. Ever. For anything.

3.) Injustice Collectors truly believe that they are morally and ethically superior to others and that others chronically do not hold themselves to the same high standards as the injustice collector does.

4.) Injustice Collectors make the rules, break the rules and enforce the rules of the family. They are a combined legislator, police, and judge and jury of

5.) Injustice Collectors never worry about what is wrong with themselves as their "bad list" grows. Their focus is always on the failings of others.

6.) Injustice Collectors are never upset by the disparity of their rules for others with their own expectations of themselves.

7.) Injustice Collectors rationalize their own behavior with great ease and comfort.

Here are more with 20 characteristics
http://www.lisaescott.com/forum/2009/11/25/are-they-injustice-collector

Characteristics of Injustice Collectors

1. Injustice collectors are never wrong. How is it possible that they are never wrong? It's simple: They are always right.

2. Injustice collectors never apologize. Ever. For anything.

3. Injustice collectors truly believe they are morally and ethically superior to others and that others seem incapable of holding themselves to the same high standards as the injustice collector does.

4. Injustice collectors make the rules, break the rules and enforce the rules of the family. They are a combination of legislator, police, judge and jury to those they consider their subjects. They forever banish from their kingdom any subject they deem disloyal, and only grant clemency if there is sufficient (in their eyes) contrition.

5. Injustice collectors never worry about what is wrong with them as their "bad" list grows. Their focus is always on the failings of others.

6. Injustice collectors are never troubled by the disparity between their rules for others and their own expectations of themselves. Injustice collectors rationalize their own behavior with great ease and comfort.

7. Injustice collectors have an external orientation; the problem always exists in the world, outside of themselves, and in their view, the world would be an acceptable place if their rules and standards were followed at all times.

8. Injustice collectors do not have a capacity for remorse, empathy or guilt.

9. Injustice collectors scoff at the idea of therapy, therapists, self-help books, and other tools used by people who struggle to live with them.

10. The phrase "walking on eggshells" describes life with an injustice collector.

11. The IC (injustice Collector) will prey upon your weaknesses to frame all issues in their terms.

12. IC's will always cry foul when you are 'mean' to them and accuse you of being nasty when you are confronting them with their negative behavior.

13. They are titanically insecure and cannot trust anyone. All relationships they have, even with their own parents and children and trustless and must be reinforced by subordination over and over.

14. They can only strengthen relationships through imprisoning their mates and banning behaviors and other relationships. Friends and family are a huge threat to the IC.

15. They must repetitively revisit situations where you service them, give in to them and agree with them. They will over time shrink your world to a small plot of empty activities that only they like. They are terrified of travel, meeting new people, understanding new concepts and paroling you from any punishment they have previously 'convicted' you of.

16. They do not care about you at all, they care about aggrandizing themselves with you as an assistant producer.

17. They will occasionally do something for you, but if you are not completely brainwashed, it will be a negative experience for you in the end. Example is throwing you a birthday party. I guarantee you will not have fun at your own party.

18. They will force you to choose between them and other things you like or love. The more you choose them, the more they will make you choose them over and over. They do not understand the concept of loyalty at all.

19. Hypocrisy is their modus operandi for debating and arguing with you. Everything they say about you is true about them. (aka Projection) It makes it so you try to 'win' fights by getting them to agree with you, which they never can because their whole position is false.

20. Your life will disappear into their lives. Your hopes and dreams will fade, even in your own mind. You will eat what they want, you will watch what they want on TV, you will vacation where they want, or not at all.

Early to say, but very likely Minassian is going to meet all characteristics of one and looks like he does.

Websleuth Radio Interview Tina Meier
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/websleuths/2013/09/30/tricias-true-crime-radio-adult-cyber-bullying

Tina Meier's description of Lori Drew starts at the 20:40 mark. Tina Meier is Megan's mother who was harassed to suicide by Drew. Lori Drew is a constant complainer and very bitter. In ID Web Of Lies Friend Request and Tina Meier said Lori and Sarah Drew had trouble fitting in, which points to social alienation. This likely describes Alek Minassian as much as it describes Elliot Rodger. Lori Drew is similar to Jodi Arias, Casey Anthony, Betty Broderick, Yoselyn Ortega, Michelle Carter, Nikolas Cruz, Stephen Paddock, Devin Kelley, Omar Mateen, Seung-Hui Cho, Adam Lanza, Eric Harris, Anders Breivik, 9/11 Terrorists and Osama bin Laden. Drew is more driven by rejection like Arias, Broderick, and Carter, while she is vicarious like Lanza, Mateen, and bin Laden. She can be predatory like Larry Nassar, Jimmy Savile, Jerry Sandusky, and Mary Kay Letourneau. That is not the case with Minassian, though they are extremely narcissistic. They all had pathological envy issues, which is likely the case with Minassian.

Sounds like injustice collectors share the same traits with malignant narcissists.

Sounds like injustice collectors share the same traits with malignant narcissists.

Agreed. Jerry Sandusky or Larry Nassar are not injustice collectors, but are malignant narcissists nonetheless.

Even borderline narcissists are injustice collectors like Jodi Arias, Lori Drew, Casey Anthony, Betty Broderick, and Christy Sheats.

Yes. People with mental illnesses are more likely to be victims. The studies bear that out.

They are also OVERREPRESENTED in the criminal justice system. The statistics bare that out:

"Individuals with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression are overrepresented in the criminal justice system.1 This overrepresentation has become a growing concern nationally among mental health workers, corrections departments, lawyers, public policy makers, and human rights advocates.2 Although estimates vary widely, approximately 14 to 16% of people in the criminal justice system have a serious or persistent mental illness.3 This translates to over one million people."

In addition to having trouble in prison, offenders with serious mental illness have a difficult time when they are released back into the community.10 In fact, people with mental illness are significantly more likely to fail the terms of their probation and parole.11 Studies have found that offenders with mental illness are around twice as likely to have their parole suspended than offenders without mental illness.12 This results in a return to custody, often within a year,13 further perpetuating the overrepresentation of individuals with mental illness behind bars.

This article examines why people with serious mental illness are overrepresented in jails and prisons, and what can be done to prevent criminal justice involvement among this high-risk population. In order to develop effective and efficient prevention and intervention strategies, it is critical to understand the role of mental health symptoms in causing and perpetuating criminal activity.

i heard on the radio yesterday he left a remark on his facebook page about elliot rodgers

elliot rodgers i someone whome INCELS worship. incel means involuntarily celibate. it's a subculture that i'm not going to get into but they are misogynistic younger guys who can be found on reddit and 4chan.

it's a rabbit hole.. that's for sure. been following a few boards that have been pointing out the more dangerous ones, i wonder if this guy had an acct on either of the aboved mentioned websites.

eugenie I am not seeing a thread for this Trial. I believe u may need to have a few posts before starting a thread. If u can post mainstream media on the trial we can help.

<modsnip>

I'm comfortable insulting and ridiculing the Incel culture, while at the same time recognizing how dangerous they are. It's not up to women to help men get over misogyny.

<modsnip>

<modsnip>In our patriarchal society men hold the power and (some) men blame women for their failures on the job, in the world, getting dates, having sex. There are men who blame their female victims (murder, rape, abuse, torture) and others (of both genders) who will side with them. Heck, the COURT often sides with rapists and abusers.

I don't feel sorry for any of these men no matter what sad stories they tell. Hateful misogynists. Maybe if they respected women they would have better luck? Just a thought.

Yes, it is not normal and yes it is mental illness, but what to do about it? And why so much of it?

I don't think there's more mental illness now than there ever was (I'm not saying you said there was, just using your post to jump off and a lot of people do think there's more now than there used to be). In the past, anyone with a diagnosis of mental illness or mental disability was institutionalised. Now for both $$$ reasons and compassionate reasons as well as the availability of effective psychotropic medications and other therapies, those people are now in the community. Governments need to fund good outpatient diagnostic services, mental health, therapies, education etc and ensure all those services are of a good quality standard. With humane, patient-centred acute care facilities as well for when people really do need hospitalisation. That's step one imo.

And never lose sight of the fact that most people with mental illness and mental disabilities never hurt anyone, know wrong from right, and are more at risk of killing themselves or falling victim to bullies and abusers.

Secondly we really need to keep working on getting over the stigma of diagnoses in society. While various diagnoses have stigma, people are much less likely to seek the help they need.

I spent plenty of time reading r/incels when it still existed. Disgusting place. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if quite a few of them are high-functioning ASD, diagnosed or otherwise. That doesn't mean individuals with ASD are innately dangerous. It reflects the fact that a lot of people on the spectrum aren't diagnosed or aren't diagnosed early enough to receive intervention. Left alone, often having spent their childhood isolated from others because people alienate them because they're "weird", and with serious communication deficits and an inability to properly process people's emotions (including their own), individuals with ASD can easily be manipulated into thinking and believing certain things by people with toxic intentions.

They are also OVERREPRESENTED in the criminal justice system. The statistics bare that out:

"While it remains unclear exactly how Mr. Minassian fits into these online communities of anti-feminist trolls, many self-styled incels spent Tuesday celebrating the attack he is alleged to have carried out. The incel community exists in a dark corner of the internet, infamous for its sexist, racist and homophobic language, where cyberbullying and posts normalizing rape are common."

Facebook has confirmed that a post published shortly before the attack came from a profile linked to Minassian, and it provides some chilling insight into what may have motivated him to wage such a violent attack. In it, Minassian wrote: "Private (Recruit) Minassian Infantry 00010, wishing to speak to Sgt 4chan please. C23249161. The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail the Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!”
