Three crime-scene DNA samples have been linked to the man accused of killing and sexually assaulting a retired hairdresser 28 years ago in Petrolia, Ont.

The evidence came from OPP identification officer Darren Soucie, the only witness to testify during the jury trial Wednesday.

The 44-year-old accused is charged with the first-degree murder and sexual assault of Velma Thomson in October, 1983, but cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was 15 years old at the time of the slaying.

Samples from Thomson’s pubic hair, along with semen and hairs found on her slipper, were compared to DNA from a blood sample taken after the man was arrested in June 2008.

I hope they do not have plans to ever let this guy out...

|Michael Giroux, known as the "High Park rapist," was denied parole in Montreal and will continue to serve out his 20-year sentence after pleading guilty to 40 criminal offences in 1996.

The parole hearing Wednesday was another marker in the gruesome history of the now 50-year-old serial rapist; five women were sexually assaulted by the man — two in Toronto's High Park area — over the span of 10 years

Unfortunately Douglas McCaul is an almost free man, until recently. I am trying to get him restrained from entering a store where I work. He misrepresented his true identity to me in order to get me to come out and volunteer as a patient advocate for the Royal Hospital in Brockville.

He claimed he "worked" with law enforcement for 35 years in Toronto, and had me convinced he was ex-law enforcement.

I called the police this week to check on the case. I thought I saw him walking about, unaccompanied around town. I am not sure it was him, but if it was- it's a very sad thing this man is out.

Thanks for sharing your personal experience, oi vey. McCaul should be in a mental institution for the rest of his life. He should be deemed a dangerous offender for the two vicious murders. He was never brought to trial for the Archie McDougal slaying, despite his confession. I think he should be, because then he might get that sentence of confinement for the remainder of his life.

The really crazy part about this is he was granted permission to go out into the community freely. And he was working as a patient advocate at the Royal Hospital in Brockville. He was talking about stigma for mental illness when I met him, which in hindsight is such a pathetic excuse for himself. Really?! I do know people who suffer from mental illness who are nice people, who are responsible for themselves and who are simply not themselves when they are sick. They don't kill people.

The man killed 2 people, and attacked a second woman when he was working and living in the St Thomas area. He was not held criminally responsible for that either.

The other thing that bothers me is the community doesn't get fair warning about this guy. Misrepresenting himself as law enforcement to get someone to trust him, is a red flag even if he never hurt anybody; and yet because he's "criminally insane" he's sent back to the psych ward, and will probably be let out again without warning to the community.

This is a very intriguing story - imo the convicted killer can't roam freely in the community without help from others. These 'others' seem to be jaded, have no empathy for others or they receive some sort of bonus for declaring this person cured by 'others'.

It seems to me the killer recognizes the 'weak' area (others) and uses it to their advantage.

Does anyone have names for the 'others' letting this killer, and other killers, roam the community?

"McCaul, without question, is one disturbing piece of work. Back in 1976, the then-closeted transvestite was found not guilty by reason of insanity -- terminology which has since been replaced by "not criminally responsible" -- for the murder of Carol Lynn Millar, 25, whose badly beaten and semi-naked body was found frozen in a compost heap in a Toronto park by a man walking his dog."

The facts of the case were so grisly -- attempted sex with the corpse three days after the murder, for example -- that Ontario Supreme Court Justice Samuel Hughes barred the public and the press from the courtroom in "the interest of public morals."

Shortly after being sent to Penetang, McCaul confessed to a murder predating Millar's by five years -- that of a 61-year-old stranger, Archibald McDougal, a caretaker at Toronto's Loretto Abbey private school for girls whom he stabbed to death and mutilated with a paring knife.

Because he was already incarcerated at Penetang as a psychiatric inmate, the Crown saw no sense in putting McCaul on trial for the killing of McDougal."

"When spring eventually breaks, and residents of the St. Lawrence Seaway city of Brockville happen to see what appears to be a woman in dire need of a shave strolling the park-like grounds of the Brockville Mental Health Centre, they will be gazing upon one of the most wacked-out psycho killers in Toronto's history.

They will looking upon Douglas Lawrence McCaul.

If he is walking towards the open gateway unescorted, they should call 911 immediately.

He is not ever to be walking alone".

2004 coldcase new big reward, but must be before January 31!

The bodies were found inside the SUV, 12 kilometres north in the rear parking lot of Victoria Square United Church on Woodbine Ave. at Elgin Mills Rd. E.

Why did the killers leave a bloody scene inside the massage parlour and take the victims to a church parking lot next to a cemetery?

Was this a message: Here are the bodies, go bury them?

So far, the killers have covered their tracks very well.

But York Region police are not giving up.

The Police Services Board recently approved doubling the reward for information to $200,000, in hopes of a break in the case."

MYSTERY

Mr. Sit's cause of death has not been released because it is a detail known only to those who are responsible, police said.

The four teenagers went to school together, Det. Leone said, but students at Harbord Collegiate Institute on Harbord Street knew very little of the group.

If Eve were attending classes now, she would be in Grade 10, but classmate Samantha Burns said the girl is not well known.

"The school cares, but it depends who," she said. "Not too many people knew [Eve]. Nobody seems to care. The school is not making a big deal about it."

Eve's mother, Carmen Wu, is frustrated by the apparent malaise surrounding the investigation of her daughter's disappearance.

Ms. Wu believes Eve and boyfriend Jackie have been kidnapped by a "group of men," and said she hopes they are together so Jackie might be able to offer Eve some protection.

Speaking through an interpreter, Qi Tao, Ms. Wu said Eve did not know Philip Sit well and does not believe her daughter's disappearance is connected to that of Mr. Sit"

Yes, I remember that case and I'm surprised they haven't been located yet.

Again, this is an older article with some detail about this odd case - maybe someone will write a new article ( with a few more details for sleuthing)..

" Mills's own epiphany about the cyber world began after the disappearance of those three teens — Eve Ho, 17, her boyfriend Jackie Li, also 17, and Kevin Lim, 18. They vanished five days after the remains of their 17-year-old friend, Phillip Sit, was found in King Township, just north of Toronto in early August, 2006.

Mills was a truant officer at the time, monitoring some of the popular online chat groups to see what kids were up to. When Eve Ho's friends told her school principal at Harbord Collegiate Institute that Ho was missing, it was Mills who took their statement.

A big advantage

When leads dried up, Mills turned to YouTube to make his first appeal and sent those video links directly to the e-mail inboxes of some the disappeared teens' friends. "You don't have to rely on them catching the evening news," he says"

I applaud Mills for taking the initiative and reaching out for information - have felt for some time that LE should be doing a lot more of that, rather than 'waiting for the call'. It's so easy now.

Not unsolved but for Toronto and Southern Ontario sleuths, A&E Killer Kids is featuring Peter Woodcock/David Michael Krueger tonight. Truly evil man, deceased now, murdered 3 very young children when he was a teenager.

Then along with a former Penetang psych hospital patient who was given permission to escort him on a day pass (this guy had murdered someone before and was now a security guard at an Ottawa court house) murdered another patient at the Brockville Psych hospital.

Peter Woodcock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks, Flossie JMO. Unfortunately it's on the Biography Channel, which I don't get.

In my search for unsolved crimes for this thread, I came across this guy 3-4 years ago, and read quite a bit about the murders in the newspaper archives before reaching the point where Woodcock was captured.

Thanks, dotr. The show looks good. My favourite true crime shows emphasize archival footage, photographs, and other real elements, rather than re-enactments.

I must have missed or forgotten about this older article.

Gilmour's brother, Sean McCowan, told Global News he called Detective Sergeant Steve Ryan of the Toronto Police Cold Case Squad after reading the papers on Tuesday.

"(Det. Sgt. Ryan) just mentioned that the Colonel is a person of interest and they're going to take a look at it," McCowan says. "You start to think about Erin's case, and could this person be somehow involved."

Col. Williams graduated with a degree in economics and political science from the University of Toronto in 1987.

Gilmour was found dead in her Yorkville apartment in December 1983.

"I'm not sure how long he was here for, but theoretically it does fit," says McCowan.
