The lesson is in the chart.....china flattened the curve...

"Watching Wuhan I thought back in end January:
- Good that we now know how to and how not to respond to this
- Good that China bought us time to prepare
- Good that we now know about effectiveness of massive social distancing.
8 weeks later: They completely ignored all lessons" epsilon on Twitter

but VP Pence said:

Over the weekend, Vice President Mike Pence stressed it was safe for healthy Americans to travel, noting "one of our favorite places to go when my children were young and even before my children came was in Orlando."

"Whether it be Disney World, whether it be other destination, whether it be cruise ships … those most at risk are seniors with serious or chronic underlying health conditions."

"Otherwise Americans can confidently travel in this country," Pence said at a meeting with cruise industry officials in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.

the above statement is exactly why people are not cancelling cruises or trips to Disney.

"Initially, we had a posture of containment so we could give people time to prepare. We're shifting into mitigation phase, which means that we're helping communities understand you're going to see more cases...you're going to see more deaths. -@Surgeon_General @CNN

Dow set to open with a decline of 1,300 points as oil war adds to coronavirus stresses

Wall Street is preparing for a bloodbath on Monday, after oil prices cratered by 30 percent overnight, pushing all three major averages to declines of around 5 percent and adding stress to an economy already feeling intense pressure from the coronavirus epidemic.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average looked set to open down by 1,300 points on Monday morning, with trading on the S&P 500 halted overnight after hitting critical levels that triggered a "circuit-breaker," which prevents further losses.

Investors took shelter in safe havens, pushing gold to a seven-year high and pushing the 10-year Treasury yield to an all-time historic low of 0.3 percent by early morning.

Conditions worsened after the world's oil-producing countries failed to strike a deal at a meeting between cartel members in Vienna last week. The stalemate continued over the weekend, with Saudi Arabia and Russia reportedly planning to ramp up production on their own terms after the current deal expires at the end of the month.

1.
A good read in the Lancet about how country-based #COVID19 mitigation strategies may favourably alter the course of the epidemic.

2.
"Personal, rather than government action, in western democracies might be the most important issue. Early self-isolation, seeking medical advice remotely unless symptoms are severe, and social distancing are key."

3.
"...strategies are also needed for reducing household transmission, supporting home treatment and diagnosis, and dealing with the economic consequences of absence from work."

Warning about scams, be aware....

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread both in the US and across the globe, the Better Business Bureau and the World Health Organisation have issued warnings about potential scammers taking advantage of the outbreak.
Multiple attorneys general offices - including North Carolina and Washington, DC - have issued warnings about criminals who may set up fake websites, send emails or texts, or post on social media in an attempt to profit illegally.

WHO has said it will never ask for direct donations to emergency response plans via email, separate websites, calls or texts.

To prevent phishing, WHO recommends users verify the sender by checking their email address, check any links before clicking, be wary of anyone asking for personal information and to report any scams they see to their attorney general office.

Why CNN is calling the novel coronavirus outbreak a PANDEMIC

Starting today, you will notice that CNN is using the term pandemic to describe the current coronavirus outbreak. It is not a decision we take lightly. While we know it sounds alarming, it should not cause panic.

So why now? The World Health Organization hasn't called the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Nor has the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But many epidemiologists and public health experts argue the world is already experiencing a pandemic because of the novel coronavirus. There are now over 100,000 cases and over 3,000 deaths attributed to this new virus. In one day last week, the number of new cases outside of China, where the virus originated, was nearly 9 times higher than the number of new cases in China. This virus has found a foothold on every continent except for Antarctica. In several countries, the number of cases continues to climb.

Some of those countries "have had sustained community transmission of a substantial sort," said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University professor and longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Put that together, that spells pandemic."

I am assuming those soldiers weren't in their seventies or eighties.
