CDC has confirmed 53 cases of novel coronavirus in the US

There are now 53 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.

These include 36 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, three people repatriated from China and 14 US cases.

This reflects an increase in 18 cases from Friday, all among Diamond Princess passengers. At the time, CDC officials said that there were additional passengers who had tested positive for the virus in Japan and would likely be added to the official US count once those test results had been adjudicated.

The 14 US cases include eight in California, one in Massachusetts, one in Washington state, one in Arizona, two in Illinois and one in Wisconsin. Among these cases, there are two instances of person-to-person transmission, one in Illinois and one in California.

I’m living in a city in Friuli Venezia Giulia. They have shut down all activities, schools, religious and movie theaters. Fun activity And Sports till Monday. I'm worried it might be longer if more people get affected. My city seems normal except with no tourist. Parents are very all over the place. We had been traveling last week and arrived in Venice Saturday evening. It really is a uncomfortable feeling when it's in your back yard. Thanks for all the updates.

Yeah, in the unlikely event you haven't seen it, sounds like everything is closing down:

Italy's top soccer league, Serie A, canceled at least four matches scheduled to be played in Lombardy and Veneto regions.

Atalanta versus Sassuolo, Hellas Verona versus Cagliari, Torino versus Parma, and Inter Milan versus Sampdoria were suspended, according to Serie A's website on Sunday.
The country's fashion capital, Milan, announced it would close its schools starting Monday for a week. School trips inside and outside Italy were also being canceled from Sunday, according to a statement by Italy's Ministry of Education.

The spike in numbers has also affected the end of Milan Fashion Week.

Fashion houses Giorgio Armani and Laura Biagiotti confirmed to CNN that they will be holding Sunday's fashion shows with no spectators and behind closed doors.

Venice Carnival is being suspended in the face of the outbreak, Luca Zaia, the governor of the Veneto region, announced Sunday.

Two of the region's 25 cases occurred in Venice, the popular tourist destination whose carnival celebrations attract visitors from across the world.

Zaia also announced a ban on public and private meetings, and closures of schools, universities and museums in the region.

I am not a fashion person, but I think fashion shows behind closed doors are going to look very creepy and dystopian-movie... more here:

Interesting.... methinks there’s been a delay in public reporting here, and the cat got out of the bag 2 days ago with that Contra Costa court filing. Seems like we here on the thread knew something was up.

A WHO-led team of scientists that just returned from China found that the epidemic in China peaked and plateaued between Jan. 23 and Feb. 2 and has been declining steadily since then, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of WHO, said at a press conference at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva.

The case fatality rate is between 2% and 4% inside the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and 0.7% outside of Wuhan, Tedros said, citing the team’s findings. For people with mild diseases, recovery time is two weeks, while people with severe or critical diseases recover in three to six weeks, he said.

While cases in China have slowed, the “sudden increase in new cases” outside of China is “deeply concerning,” Tedros said. Outside of China, there are 2,074 cases across 28 countries, including 23 deaths, he said.

“What we see is epidemics in different parts of the world, affecting countries in different ways and requiring a tailored response,” Tedros said.

Coronavirus: FTSE 100 sees biggest fall in four years on outbreak fears
"There has been so much complacency in recent weeks from investors, despite clear signs that China's economy is facing a large hit and that supply chains around the world were being disrupted."

In London, the FTSE 100 was down by as much as almost 300 points, or nearly 4%, during the session, before recovering some of those losses by the close.

Travel-related stocks led the fallers, with easyJet losing nearly 17% and holiday operator TUI down 10%.

British Airways-owner IAG was more than 9% lower while hotel stocks also felt significant pain.

Mining giants such as Anglo American and Rio Tinto - whose fortunes have been closely tied to China's rapid economic expansion in recent times - took a big hit too.

In the US, tech giants were among the big fallers with Apple, Microsoft down about 4% and Amazon by nearly 5%.

I know this building. I used to pass it daily. It housed mental patients in the 70's. I disagree that it cannot be restricted for access. More concerning is that it's old and rundown. It would take a lot of renovations and money to make it safe for quarantined patients. Imo

Representatives from the southern California city of Costa Mesa will be in court this afternoon to continue its fight against housing coronavirus patients in its city.

Late Friday, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking the possible use of the Fairview Developmental Center to quarantine patients who've tested positive for the coronavirus. In the complaint, the city says “Fairview is an inappropriate location for a quarantine, as there is no way to restrict access to or from the facility.”

A hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time Monday.

So many questions:

1. Are Mild cases kept at home or are they kept in those dormitories or makeshift hospitals we saw in China?

2. So Mild cases take 2 weeks to recover. But how long are they infectious for?

3. Do we assume Severe and Critical patients are in a hospital during that 3-6 week recover time?

4. How long are Severe and Critical patients infectious for?

Nobody is sending money in to the WHO Emergency Fund. Seriously? Ireland, Slovakia, Japan, EU, UK, Canada while the rest of the world sits on its wallet? The giant in the room being the US...so we are just not going to contribute at all? Good grief...

I'm not sure how much other countries have already given.....maybe this group who are giving now are just late to the party.....like the UN funding.

Don't miss out that he also mentioned Cuba contributed

If it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck...it is a duck.
This IS a pandemic according to all descriptions of "what is a pandemic".
IMO. Nobody wants to call it what is...over fear of starting panics.

Austria has said it will stop people suspected of carrying the coronavirus from crossing its border, after parts of northern Italy were put into lockdown over the weekend following a surge in cases.

“As far as the borders and cross-border traffic are concerned, we will proceed as follows: we will further tighten warning systems with our neighbours, we will immediately order a stop in the event of suspected cases, as happened last night,” Kurz said on Monday.

I found this concerning US contributions.....yep, they are all late to the party...

One of the main ways in which the U.S. government supports WHO is through assessed and voluntary contributions; the U.S. is the single largest contributor to WHO. For many years, the assessed contribution for the U.S. has been set at 22% of all member state assessed contributions, the maximum allowed rate.18 Between FY 2010 and FY 2017, the U.S. assessed contribution has been fairly stable, fluctuating between $107 million and $114 million (see Figure 2).

Question about mutation if anyone knows the answer... does a mutation (or multiple mutations) basically equate to a new and different virus? If so, then multiple vaccines would be required?

It will still be a form of COVID-19, but perhaps classified as a different "strain". As to mutations requiring multiple vaccines, depends on where the mutation is on the RNA and if that specific vaccine was developed to target the part that changed.

Think of the "everyday flu virus" and the vaccine for such. We know it mutates year to year, so the current vaccine is really one vaccine with a mixture against different past flu virus *strains*,...it's like many vaccines in one, and the govm't/private industries guess which strains are going to go worldwide each year. Think about what we all know about no symptoms present but a carrier. What a waste of resources.......they should shut it down.
