Countries will have to go beyond locking down their societies to defeat coronavirus, the World Health Organization's top emergency expert said on Sunday, adding that there need to be public health measures to avoid a resurgence of the virus later on.

"What we really need to focus on is finding those who are sick, those who have the virus, and isolate them, find their contacts and isolate them," Mike Ryan said in an interview on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

"The danger right now with the lockdowns ... if we don't put in place the strong public health measures now, when those movement restrictions and lockdowns are lifted, the danger is the disease will jump back up."

Worldwide, more than 307,000 people have now contracted the novel coronavirus and at least 12,944 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. For most, the coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms. But it can cause more severe illness in others, especially older adults and people with existing health conditions. Some 92,000 people have recovered, mostly in China, where the virus first struck late last year.

At his daily media briefing on Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Global Affairs is "working directly" with the governments in Peru and Spain "and right around the world" to ensure Canadians stranded in other countries "have access to airports so that flights can take off when the airspace is closed."

...Masks do help people as a preventative. At least according to a major study and some minor studies in Asia. If the CDC has evidence of the contrary that's been published in a juried publication, as they imply they do, I have yet to see it. At any rate, I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorists, but the government's decision to tell us not to where masks now seems as if it needs to be challenged. I notice that Dr Fauci hasn't touched that issue yet, it's such a hot potato and he doesn't wear a mask to those crowded pressers.

<respectfully snipped>

I've said it several times: I am aghast that the Task Force, the President, and Vice President continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder during the daily briefings  Why? How can they expect the American people to cooperate with the pleas for "social distancing" when they, themselves, don't abide by the CDC rule? It isn't necessary for all of them to cram into a tight space so they can be seen on camera. Each can step up to the podium for individual report and return to the podium when asked a question. When not giving a report, the Task Force team should be standing out of view away from the podium and keep their distance from each other and the media representatives in the room.

UK

This is absolutely shocking.

A paramedic has described being evicted from his home because his landlady was concerned that he could spread Covid-19 at the property.

Joseph Hoar, a paramedic for South Western ambulance service, tweeted on Saturday night that he had been asked to leave his home within 24 hours because the owner was “super nervous about having someone from the NHS here”.

It is disgraceful how selfish people are and it is happening in the U.K too. We are going to end up in total lockdown as the death toll rises and rises.

@dixiegirl1035 .....I think you were looking for this....

PER CAPITA DEATHS
: Italy is now clearly worse than Hubei. And Spain now pops out as another serious epidemic hotspot with another potential runaway outbreak. I think regional/local per capita rate is always a better way to look at epidemics. #COVID19 Eric Feigl-Ding on Twitter

What is the definition of elderly - over 80, over 70, over 60??? I have seen varying definitions of elderly.

The risk climbs mildly at age 50. About 1% of people aged 50-59 who are known to have contracted CV19 will die (as compared to approximately .05% of 40 year olds, so far - this is based on data that is still heavily skewed toward Asia and Washington state). At 60, the risk climbs to at least 2% which is quite sobering. At 70, the risk is something like 3-4% mortality and at 80 and older it's something like 5-7%. Maybe even 8%.

Younger people can still require hospital admission to survive and that's a real concern. If we don't flatten the curve, do we give all the hospital beds to under-50's and decrease survival for the over-50's? Doctors in Italy have had to make those decisions and it's awful. Two people in their 30's had died in the US as of yesterday, both had not received hospital/ICU care in time.

Above figures are derived from various publications as of about 5-6 days ago, I am not sure what the numbers are today. New York's data will be crucial in helping us understand who is at risk in the US.

At any rate, hearing that thirty-somethings are dying is awful (a third one appears to have died yesterday - in good health, quarantined at home as is common in the US due to lack of beds, awaiting test results).
