Go Italy! Thank God! My heart breaks daily for them.

Everything about Italy is beautiful to me - the people, the food, the culture, the history, the arts, the language, the buildings, the towns, the churches, the monuments, the mountains... everything... it's my favourite European country to visit by a mile. My heart has absolutely broken for this wonderful nation, and I fear we're going the same way.

I asked that question yesterday, what was considered elderly. One person answered that 55 was considered elderly for subsidized housing. Italy considers age over 60 not worth the time to try to save. People that have more than likely worked for decades, paid their taxes that are 60+ are not worthy trying to save. I think Italy is wrong on this.

I'm not sure Italy thinks people 60+ are "not worth" saving. I think they are overwhelmed and out of ventilators. We've seen the anguish. They are in wartime triage right now. Jmo

These decisions aren't made because older people are considered less worthy of saving, they're based on the likelihood of survival. It's triage, and it's some of the most difficult and emotional decision-making that HCPs are tasked with. When there simply are not enough resources to treat every patient as aggressively as possible, hard decisions have to be made, and resources are best allocated to patients who are more likely to respond to treatment and survive.

THIS! So much so, although many still don’t recognize it. I have always been one to stand up for employees who experience disrespect because of the “menial” (I hate even typing that because I don’t view it as such) position they work in. Just yesterday when stopping into one of our stores I escorted 2 customers out for harassing a cashier over our current purchase limits on supplies. I am a willing to take a certain amount of harassment given my position in the company but when you start in on those who work for me my momma bear instincts come out...especially now!

When you think about how much these sports stars and celebs get paid it is disgusting. If anything good comes from this it should be a massive appreciation of our everyday heroes and a backlash against the millions paid to people like footballers and actors. Sickening, really.

As the peak of the number of sick people who are either not able to work and stay at home, or are hospitalized in stable or critical conditions isn't even predicted to hit for 21 days, lessening the restrictions in 15 days sounds exactly like the prescription for more disease and morbidity.

AND MORE RISK to frontline HEALTHCARE providers.

This is just unacceptable and irresponsible to portray as realistic.
Yeah, that is how they got me to understand it. I work in healthcare, but nonessential, but they educate us. Just when I am sure this is at least a 2-3 month ordeal, I turned this press conference on, and I am like what???

Yes. I’ve tried every avenue I can imagine to get to the thread and the screen still pops up blocking me.
Try the "magic" close all apps and restart cure. A few times I got a "don't have permission to view" messages from the front page of WS whenever I clicked on a thread. I restarted my phone and the problem went away. Imo

I am confused. I don't understand all of the sudden optimism about opening up the economy in weeks. Is this a safety decision or a $$$$ decision? I am all for the economy, and hate sitting home, but if the message of the last week is true, could it not be months b

I don't think that age is the only criteria. It's become a case of diminishing return: 60 years old with diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure versus at 70 year old with no underlying health concerns. It's the classic triage situation.

That's a well thought out answer.

Be safe. I love Italy and everything about it. I had hoped to get back one day. I hope that happens.

I will, too. I think we're still several weeks away from a peak. I want to see our kids and grandkids. It was nice to hear that NYC test of the malaria drug had helped a critically ill man improve dramatically.

JMO
Which test in NYC helped a critically ill man to improve after taking malaria drug? Link?

it is scary seeing all the people my age dying it is frightning just terrifying i hope i dont get it
Oh dear. This isn't good. From the article:

A union leader at Canada Post in St. John's says 13 postal workers are now in isolation — including himself.

Craig Dyer made the comment to CBC News after Canada Post confirmed that one of its employees at the Kenmount Road mail processing plant had tested positive for COVID-19 Monday.

Dyer, the chief shop steward for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers local, said those in quarantine were told to do so by public health after attending a funeral at Caul's Funeral Home a week ago where a person who tested positive for COVID-19 is said to have attended. The Canada Post employee who tested positive is among them.

These stories are a real concern. I'm not sure if people realize just how thin our services may become and how difficult our lifestyles will be for the next (3?) months. Food deliveries have slowed to a crawl here in California while Instacart, Amazon, Costco, Sam's Club and all the grocery stores are begging for new workers.

This thing is SO contagious, most of us have never experienced anything like this (especially if you were born after 1970).

@Tillicum
I think you gave us some gardening advice on a prior thread and I wanted to thank you. I am seriously considering just ordering bags of potting soil and seeds to be delivered, starting the way you instructed, giving seedlings away to neighbors if needed. No one knows where we will be in a month or two.
Wonderful!

It sounds like someone is bypassing Dr. Faucci

<modsnip> he is looking at things from his point of view, as a doctor. It may not be a balanced position.

I used to supervise a staff, and each person was great, but they never had the picture of the whole pie. Their focus was laser focused on their area only. And there were times, I made decisions against what one "expert" said. Because, sometimes there needs to be a balance.
