So, the RAS is the renin-angiotensin system. And the person speaking of it knows so much due to her studies of anesthesiology - where people think they are asleep, but they are actually made unconscious (yes, there is a difference).

The RAS is what makes all of your systems work together to help you out. Coagulates your blood, while inflamming the area to fight off pathogens, while reabsorbing ions and water to maintain your blood pressure as you are losing blood etc etc.

Covid attacks the RAS system, and if your RAS system is not working well it cannot coordinate the defence against covid very well, and this can lead to severe illness/morbidity.
The speaker thinks this is one reason (not the only reason) for severe illness and death in some covid patients and not others.

COVID-19: Tier 4 lockdown announced for London and most of South East - with Christmas bubbles cancelled for millions

Millions of people across southeast England will no longer be able to mix with other households at Christmas, with a new Tier 4 level of COVID restrictions - equivalent to a full lockdown - to come into force tomorrow.

In a dramatic move, prompted by fears over a new strain of coronavirus, all those areas currently in Tier 3 in the South East - including London - will move to the new Tier 4 on Sunday.

And, in further stark action across the rest of England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced the planned five-day easing of restrictions over the festive period will now be limited to a single day.

I was just going to post this: Holy moly: they are citing a new version of the virus which is spreading much faster although it is stated it doesn't make people sicker. Apparently it is even more transmissible. Good grief---

So, do I assume that there will still be long-term bans on letting AMericans travel there?????
Asking for a friend.......

Our international borders are officially closed until mid-March 2021 (that will be a full year of being closed). At that point, they will review the situation.

As we are not planning on starting vaccination until March, I don't know how we can open our international borders then.

We had hoped to get some safe travel bubbles open with other countries by then (like possibly Fiji, China, Vanuatu, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and New Zealand), to test the waters, see if we can keep safe. But that keeps get pushed out and pushed out due to the condition of the world.

This is odd. Maybe the nurse in question didn't want the vaccine, but why not just use a different nurse in that case?

I know I am going to say something controversial here, but I felt like that when I watched them give Pence his shot. I have never seen a shot given so quickly. Then the dr just sort of swiped the site a couple of times with his gloved finger.
I am sure I must be wrong, right?

The purchases were announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the country's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta. The country has signed for 7.6 million doses of an AstraZeneca vaccine and for 10.72 million doses of a vaccine from the company Novovax. Collectively, the double dose system will vaccinate over 10 million people. Every New Zealand citizen will receive the vaccine for free. The excess doses will be distributed in the states within the New Zealand Realm—Tokelau, Niue, and the Cook Islands. New Zealand will also offer the vaccine to neighboring states Tonga, Samoa, and Tuvalu. These nations may choose to accept the vaccine. This effort to spread the wealth is a heartening development as doses of the most promising vaccines are being snapped up by the richest and most populous countries.

The doc was just placing the already-half-installed bandaid (you can see it at the beginning) afterward, that was what the swipe was about. It did seem really fast, but then again, I guess it should be. I recently had a regular flu shot, and it was so fast and effortless and sensationless, that in a moment of conspiracy-theory in my head, I was wondering if the doc actually inserted anything.. until later when my arm was letting me know that it was for real, as it always does (just becomes a bit tender if touched, or if I lie on my arm, or it gets bumped, etc., for a couple days afterward). That was the best injection experience I've ever had, that's for sure. I think some are just better and quicker at it than others.

I was thinking of all totally unexpected things that changed our lives forever Due to this virus. Last year I really didn’t think we had anything to worry about. I just kind of thought it wouldnt really effect us. I rolled my eyes at the panic talk in January. By feb I was starting to get concerned March I was in is this for real mode?

Middle March we got a phone call that our govenor shut the schools Down for the rest of the year. The kids went to school one day thinking nothing different was happening. Those students never returned to those classes. Some will never see the staff or friends Again. This was the first real shock to our little world. The kids I still had at home a teen and at the time 4 yr old. They didn’t leave the house for 5 months. I mean rides in the car was it. We got a pool and a industrial swing set so my daughter who is autistic could also swing etc. since even adults can use it. We couldn’t take them to the pool or parks so we brought it all to them.

School has been off and on and the kindergartener has only gone 2 days a week or been remote. It’s sad though how different he is , he was always a hugger a touching friends. Now you can’t even sit or play near another kid. What really shocked me most was when this child sAw a picture from last year a news article about Walmart shopping .. he was so freaked out because he couldn’t understand why no one had masks on. This poor child is at the critical age when you start retaining long term memory . It’s so depressing that he doesn’t even realize this new normal isn’t normal.

My sons wedding planned for 2 years it was a big all out event was canceled last minute , last month. I hate seeing my kids so down ! My oldest got covid a bad case is finally recovering. My adult kids aren’t wanting to do Christmas this year due to the obvious. Cases in our area are out of control. They actually just closed school until Jan 11 . But only 2 days a week and only for grade school.

My husband works for Pfizer , the plant he works at is sending several people 1000 miles away to MN strictly to work on the vaccine production . So my husband will be going there at the end of Dec. They will have to remain there for 6 to 9 months.
but for this nightmare to be over it’s worth it. At this point our pediatrician has recommended that I nor either child can get the vaccination for covid. My daughter can’t have vaccinations period. Since we aren’t sure yet of the risks with shedding or so forth , he can’t ok it. We have to use the mass- immunity to protect our daughter. So I’m praying everyone who can safely get them do, your helping protect not only yourself but family’s like mine to.

I’m glad to say goodbye to 2020 but I’m honestly not trusting 2021 with open arms. It will be awhile before I trust things can’t get worse
with a new year again.

wouldn’t it be so great if by this time next year this thread is like buried so far back it’s impossible to find. Then when we stumble on it in a few years we can all have a reminder of how good life is again ( I pray )

From what I understand, the plunger was pulled back to the dose amount and should have been place in the vial and depressed then withdrawing that same amount of COVID vaccine - to keep the bottle at the same pressure.
This was not done (or forgotten)
The syringe was recapped and the injection given was Air.
I've seen it happen once in 20 years.
I also ALWAYS change my needles out after withdrawing the vaccine from the plastic stopper- as this dulls the tip of needle and results in a bit more painful shot.
My patients always got a fresh sharp needle!
Since it was on national TV many healthcare professionals witnessed what happened and called them out.
Their response was to bring the patient back in for another shot with actual vaccine in the syringe and not air.
ALL MOO

Thank you for your sincere and eloquent response: sometimes the horror is just too much. Today my friend, who is the office manager of an attorney firm i worked for, told me she had a conversation with an attorney she has known for years: she has always liked him: Somehow the conversation drifted to the pandemic. He said he might come to the office soon: she said as long as you wear a mask and social distance, at which point he got huffy and spewed the language of this administration. He started talking about how doctors are making up statistics of death- and all that kind of stuff: she was so shocked she had to call me and share that conversation: she was astounded because she knows he is not stupid --she now knows she can never talk to him about this subject again. Sigh.Take care and be well.

It sounds like the attorney will put his employee(s) in danger with an unsafe workplace. The terrible realities we face now... Your friend may have to choose between her job and her health.

Fortunately this is an attorney who doesnt come to her office very
often. She is very protective of her boss ( her 83 year old dad)--so
she would not allow anybody in that office without a mask and social
distancing. These days they see very few clients in the office and he is retiring
soon.

That's interesting! I wonder if some people are not comfortable getting the vaccine and so they put on a fake show? You would think they would at least give them a placebo so the viewers aren't suspicious.

You could be right!

I think polio was the sugar cube and smallpox was the gun. I don’t remember the gun but it must have been quite something given the weird scars it left. Circular with little pinpoint scars around it.

I have not stared at my scar for such a long time.... !!..... Those little circles within the bigger circle... are just such a "part of me". ha ha...
I don't think younger folks truly understand what we did faithfully to be safe and healthy....

Graphic photos show blood of boy spattered over hospital walls as he died from COVID-19 | Daily Mail Online

This story is particularly gross-- the pics are horrific. what struck me was this child had symptoms but was not admitted to the hospital initially- that statement is sort of glossed over. When he finally came to death's door step he was hospitalized- he was hemorrhaging blood all over the hospital room- walls included. Later in the article it says the family took all precautions like masks, which leads me to wonder when I keep reading that people say they did everything right and still got the virus-- but did they do everything right? who knows? I think they think they did everything right but they didn't, which is not to say that you can do everything right and still get the virus- which is pretty scary

I don't believe it was fake.

So shocking watching the press conference today, my stomach was in knots. My area, which just a month or so ago had relatively low numbers, is now tier 4. My son has been locked into Tier 3 London with his girlfriend's family for weeks now and was coming home for Christmas. So that's now cancelled. All the treats I bought them, special drinks, candles, Christmas bedding, a tree for their room.. They're just things but I'm still gutted. And I really, really wanted some time with my boy.

Perspective though, unfortunately. Today I had to phone my cousin to tell her no one from our side of the family are attending my aunt's funeral. None of us think it's safe enough to go. Bloody awful.
