And now we learn that Mr.Savopoulos was experienced in martial arts!

"I don't think this probably has much to do with the crime but a couple of people have wondered about the marital art studio. It does seem to have been a long time personal interest of his. At this link it says Mr. Savapolous is a licensed instructor in 3 Japanese martial arts:

I have a question for those of you in the D.C. Area. What was the weather like on Thursday? It's very warm here in the South..someone wearing that hoodie would look very conspicuous.

Was it warm in D.C. On Thursday or would the perp have just blended in?

Sorry I don't have a link but what I remember is the husband recently got a new job in Puerto Rico. I don't recall anything about the family moving there.
The 2nd housekeeper did say the housekeeper who was murdered, Figueroa, was planning to retire soon and move to her home country. The "job" in Puerto Rico was likely an outsourced job that American Iron Works was hired to do. JMO. (I can't find links to this info now, either, but will link when I find it.)

ETA: <<snipped>> Savvas Savopoulos was the president and chief executive of Hyattsville-based American Iron Works, which played a role in building Verizon Center and *CityCenterDC. His Facebook page says he also worked for Sigma Investment Strategies in Puerto Rico. American Iron Works officials declined to comment.

<<snipped>> Gutierrez, who was close with Figueroa, said her friend had planned to soon return to her native El Salvador.

I can see one person perpetrating this crime only if he disabled and tied up each victim as they entered the house at different times. I remember that happening in at least one other case. To disable SS at all, since he was trained in martial arts, IMO the perp would have to surprise him from behind. With that in mind, I'm guessing SS was the one with blunt force trauma to his head. JMO

And, I think it had to have been planned.

BBM:
I could certainly be wrong, but that is what I thought was stated in one of the many articles.

I understand that the housekeeper of 20 years was at the house on Wednesday, but not Thursday, so it was the other housekeeper that was killed?

I haven't looked at his Facebook page, but earlier today I was looking for information on the martial arts place in Chantilly, VA. I didn't really find anything regarding that but I did find there are already a number of existing martial arts places in Chantilly.

And, I found that Savopoulos and American Iron Works are connected to Sigma Fund LLC, which is located at 13930 Willard Road in Chantilly, Virginia. And, it all falls under Savopoulos c/o Sigma Investment Manager LLC, with an address in St. Thomas, British Virgin Islands. So, maybe the plan was to move Sigma to Puerto Rico? Or maybe they already have? And maybe, just maybe that has something to do with this?

I am thinking the martial arts studio was possibly located in and planning to open in the Willard Road building. I will have to explore Sigma Investment Strategies.

Savopoulos was in real estate and development in Washington DC. His company apparently had a role in the construction of the Verizon Center and the CityCenter. The major players in this business from this area (take a look at Herb Miller, Jim Abdo, Skip Akridge, Jemal Douglas) have their hands in all sorts of projects, locally, regionally, and internationally. These developers typically have 10-20 developments under way, from casinos to hotels. I don't think there's any real back story as it pertains to his business, except for the fact he was very rich and may have made enemies with the wrong people.

Or, possibly, he was opening a new office there. To clarify, in addition to the existing office. I worked for a company that opened offices in France and Germany, and I think another was opening in Ghana but still had offices in U.S.

His Facebook page says that he is the head of Sigma Investment Strategies, a hedge fund and management company, and that he had recently accepted a job in Puerto Rico."

His business dealings are far too complex for me. That's probably why he is/was rich and I am not.

Wow! as a DC resident (out of town the past few days), I'm just finding out about this. Gotta go back and read all about it.

I must say, however, that our Police Chief, Cathy Lanier, is a truly remarkable person and perhaps the best Chief the City's ever had.

New Carrolton is an urban area. Someone wearing all black with a hood drawn would have been conspicuous but not suspicious. I saw a guy wearing a skull cap in that area yesterday. It was 85F.

I've been thinking the same, but if Philip didn't go to school on Wednesday that raises the possibility that the whole horrid situation began Wednesday A.M. Who last saw any of these people? Not heard from them, but actually saw them in person???

If it started on Wednesday, why did his sister say he was in good spirits when she talked to him on Thursday morning!? Neighbor said there was a lawn-cutting crew there on Thursday morning, that raises a red flag to me. JMO

If one were planning to move to Puerto Rico would they take their beloved Porsche with them? Would they sell their house in D.C.? If they were to take the Porsche with them, how would they ship it there? Or, were they preparing to sell it here and advertising it, maybe through an up-scale auto broker?

Wow it is complex! So he owned American Iron Works Co.and he owned a hedge fund and now he was taking a job in Puerto Rico! On the other hand he had a lot of wealth and probably a lot of stuff to steal and maybe he invited someone in from the yard crew at his house to give instructions or pay and they burglarized it, hence that plastic bag that person is carrying.

I found this on Sigma Investment Strategies, LLC:

https://opencorporates.com/companies/pr/325012-1511

It was incorporated 2 years ago, so it's likely a new company SS acquired or is part-owner in, or is just outsourcing services to. He would not have to move to P.R. to have a business interest there. JMO

I thought I saw it in print that they owned a home in the islands somehwere. I'll look back, but did find this.

So, any chance the perp heard about a 'rich guy over in DC' with 'x' in his safe / house via some connection to the martial arts studio and this whole thing was done as a poorly designed robbery by someone with a lengthy history?

That has to be what I read. Still, I should not have assumed the family would be moving out of the country with the new job. I should keep my mouth shut if I do not have it as fact! :blushing:
