The school handbook is back online. I search the calender for the date of the science fair for next spring, but it's not noted. The talent show is still slated and I see mention of the IB science program. Maybe admin decided against an organized fair this year.

I noticed that there was an interesting mural at the top of the handbook cover, so I zoomed in on it. Among the vehicles moving along Skyline drive was a white pickup truck.:(

I noticed on a floorplan map of the school that there is a gagrage building. It looks to be on the east side of the school, near the covered play area ? Does anyone know who used/uses this garage ? Is it ever unlocked ? I'm curious about it.

All JMO

Talent Show scheduled on Friday, June 3, but I don't see a "science fair" on the calendar at all. Puzzling. jmo

I found Kappy50's post that states the science fair wasn't listed in the previous handbook either.

Kappy50:"Nurse...I do understand...I just based this on looking at their 2008-2009 calendar...where it is stated about the talent show but no mention of the SF...so if this is an annual event at the school it was not on their 2008-2009..so I do understand surprise events for sure..."

Strange to me that the talent show is listed both years, but the science fair is omitted.

I've had kids in school now for almost 20 years, and one thing I've seen year after year is that school handbooks are not automatically updated and neither are websites.

Most school calendars are put together in a hurry by either busy secretaries or PTA volunteers and never updated from the originals. Accuracy might be the norm at some schools, but many handbooks and calendars on websites are done by volunteers and thus are not always a top priority and there are always dates that are changed by teachers but never updated on calendars.

Just my own observations about how these things work.

I can't find it anywhere, and I've been looking for over an hour, but when Kyron first went missing didn't Skyline elementary shut down it's website pretty quickly, or am I dreaming? I remember I was trying to identify the soccer field locations that Kyron's team played on, and when I went back to the school where I had linked to them, it was down. Yes?

Yes. It was down and then a lot was missing from the site. Including mention of the science fair.

Oh, good, I couldn't find my post about that and I thought maybe I was losing it. Okay, I found that curious then, and I find it curious now. WHY did they do that? I can see no reason, other than to be for some reason, covering the own butts. ???

I didn't know they removed stuff from the website but do they have bandwidth limitations? If they got a lot more traffic than usual the site might have been not accessible in the beginning because of it.

I know I couldn't link what I had before from the site. We were all talking about it here, I can't find the posts. Did they remove the school calendar? The handbook link? I can't remember but I remember we all thought it weird.

It was accessible, but items and comments, notices, etc., were not current or recent.

Skyline seems to have a good rep, but I found this comment from 2007 so ironic. http://www.trulia.com/schools/OR-Portland/Skyline_Elementary_School/

We love Skyline. There are many e/c activities to choose from: soccer, basketball, baseball, music, Science, Scouts, Outdoor Club, etc. The teachers, staff, and parents are all extremely dedicated to the education/well being of our kids. When you look around at Skyline, the kids are happy and accepting ... Read more of each other. The teachers know everyone's names, and your child doesn't get lost in the crowd like at a larger school. We chose to live here because Skyline is our neighborhood school.

Sad. But the comment also makes me think: why would a stranger go to a small school to abduct a child where he's more likely to be noticed?

I still think whomever took Kyron from the school had something to do with the school and knew it well. And yes, that could be parental volunteers, such as TH.

Here's a link to the latest Skyline Eagles' Nest newsletter: http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools/skyline/files/mskach/09_27_10_issue.pdf

"Our enrollment counts have been completed and are now being reviewed by District staff. Our final numbers put us at 283 students. This is about 11 students less than we had in the fall last year. This decrease in itself is not significant, but we were staffed at a much higher level than that due to an anticipated 312 students. Our lower numbers could mean that we have potential staffing reductions to deal with in the coming weeks. I let folks know this ahead of time, not to worry folks, but to give people a heads up that we may be in that position."
More at the link.

Anticipated enrollment 312; actual enrollment 283. The previous week's newsletter had enrollment at 290. I'm curious why enrollment dropped.

"Skyline is accustomed to the addition of new staff members each year. This year is no exception. We are happy to welcome all of our new hires. Be sure to say hello to them as you see them around the building. I am sure that they will impress us all with what they add to the wonderful Skyline staff."

New staff? :waitasec:

I noticed on Skyline's Website they have a school nurse. Is that mandatory in schools these days ? It's been awhile since my daughter was in school and they didn't then...just curious....

All schools have staff transitions each year. Some staff move to other areas in the district. Some leave the district for other districts. Some quit and move to the private sector. This leaves vacancies which must be filled.

No biggie. Happens in every school district, and every school in every school district.

I don't know that it's mandatory, and maybe you should ask this in the "locals" thread, but where I live, EVERY public school has a school nurse. The private schools around here don't, but all of the public schools do.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS of the TASK FORCE on SCHOOL NURSES
Submitted to the Interim House and Senate Committees on Education
Of the 74th Oregon Legislative Assembly
September 2008

According to the National Association of School Nurses, Oregon is ranked 49th in the nation for its student-to school nurse ratio.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://law.onecle.com/oregon/342-teachers-and-other-school-personnel/342.455.html

“School nurse” as used in ORS 342.465 and 342.475, means a registered nurse who is certified by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission as qualified to conduct and coordinate the health services programs of a school. [Formerly 678.505]

http://law.onecle.com/oregon/342-teachers-and-other-school-personnel/342.465.html

(1) The Teacher Standards and Practices Commission shall adopt by rule standards necessary for the issuance, denial, continuation, renewal, lapse or reinstatement of certificates issued under ORS 342.475 (1) to (3) and for establishment and collection of fees for certification as a school nurse. The commission may adopt by rule procedures for revocation of a certificate issued under ORS 342.475 (1) to (3) that are consistent with ORS 342.175 to 342.190.

(2) The Oregon State Board of Nursing shall notify the commission whenever the board takes any action on a license issued under ORS chapter 678 which might affect the ability of the license holder to practice as a school nurse. [Formerly 678.525; 1993 c.45 §176]

http://law.onecle.com/oregon/342-teachers-and-other-school-personnel/342.475.html

(1) “School nurse” is established as a category of specialization in nursing.

(2) The Teacher Standards and Practices Commission shall issue a certificate as a school nurse to a person who complies with the rules established by the commission for the certification and practice of school nursing or who has been certified by the Oregon State Board of Nursing as a school nurse practitioner. In establishing rules for the certification and practice of any specialization of school nursing, the commission shall consider the recommendations of the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

(3) The commission may issue an emergency certificate that authorizes a person licensed as a registered nurse in this state who does not meet the requirements of subsection (2) of this section to practice as a school nurse. Such certificates shall be issued for a limited time as set by the commission.

http://law.onecle.com/oregon/342-teachers-and-other-school-personnel/342.495.html

(2) No school or school district is required to employ as a nurse a person certified under ORS 342.475 (1) to (3)

Currently, over 60,023 students in Oregon school receive no or less than half-time school nursing services. It is clear that the school nurse situation in Oregon is in crisis, given the lack of school nurses and the poor nurse-to student ratios in many school districts, increasing numbers of unhealthy and medically needy students in our schools, federal and state requirements, and the overwhelming evidence of the connection between healthy students and being ready and able to learn.
