Was it self defense when Reeves killed Oulson that Sunday afternoon three years ago?
A judge will have to decide.
Starting Monday, Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Susan Barthle will begin weighing whether Reeves, 74, should be immune from prosecution in Oulson's death under Florida's stand your ground law.

Defense, prosecution offer different perspectives in Pasco theater 'stand your ground' hearing
Monday, February 20, 2017 3:22pm
DADE CITY — Curtis Reeves sat in the middle of a darkened theater where patrons were watching previews for shoot-em-ups like Sabotage and Robocop. There was an argument about a cell phone, authorities said, then the former Tampa cop shot and killed another man.

But on Monday, in a Pasco County courtroom, a judge heard a different version of the events. In this one, Reeves was an old man in declining health who acted out of fear when another man attacked him.

The first day of Reeves' long-awaited stand your ground hearing in the 2014 shooting death of Chad Oulson was marked by contradictory images. The prosecutor said the 74-year-old Reeves provoked the confrontation. Reeves' attorneys said Oulson's actions made him think he was in danger of serious assault. […]

can anyone tell me what is the point of this hearing...to decide if he can use stand your ground defense? Will it go to trial even if judge decides SYG? Or if this judge decides SYG is it all over?

Basically, yes.

[h=2]CURTIS REEVES STAND YOUR GROUND CASE live[/h][h=3]Curtis Reeves, the man accused in the fatal 2014 shooting in a Wesley Chapel movie theater, is in court for a hearing to determine if he should be immune from prosecution under Florida’s “stand your ground” law. Reeves, 74, a retired Tampa police officer, has argued that he was defending himself when he fired the single shot that killed 43-year-old Chad Oulson. The confrontation began after Reeves asked Oulson to turn off his phone during previews before the movie "Lone Survivor."[/h]http://live.tampabay.com/Event/Curtis_Reeve_Stand_Your_Ground_Case

It is working for me (ipad). Tap on the video. See the speaker at the bottom right, next to the arrow to enlarge? Make sure it does not have a diagonal line through it. The line would mean it is turned off; tap to clear that.
Thanks Spellbound. I’m on my only device – desktop PC. The speaker settings were all ok, but still no sound.
I was away for a few hours, and then clicked the link, but the video wouldn’t even load, just kept spinning. Refreshed a few times. Now the video loaded, but court must be at lunch, because StormTracker10 is on my video.
I’ll try again later.

Yes, they are on lunch break. Sorry about your audio problem. Maybe you can try clearing your history/cookies.

Video is back up, people are gathering in the courtroom now.

Well that video was a lot of blackness ... I could only see tiny snippets after 8 minutes of a black screen. Hope they show a clearer and larger scene.

They could use a better video person to adjust for all these large minutes of blank screens.

Reeves' family members took the stand on Monday to testify about his failing health. A doctor testified about the medical problems people usually develop when they got older.
"They are trying to paint a picture of a polite, feeble old man who did nothing but ask a man to put his cell phone away," Grimaldi told The News. "It's literally his only angle to not be charged with a crime."

This page has a good descriotion of self-defense immunity and Stand Your Ground. There are several videos, including the confrontation between Reeves and Mr. Oulsen. .

Keep your eyes here at Legal Insurrection for further coverage of State v. Reeves.

....., self-defense immunity merely says that if the defender’s conduct qualifies as self-defense, however self-defense might be defined, then the defender is entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution and civil suit.

So, these are two completely different legal concepts. Stand-Your-Ground redefines self-defense by removing one of five elements (Avoidance) but leaving the other four still in place. Self-defense immunity states that if you meet the required elements, whatever they might be, you qualify for legal immunity. You don’t claim Stand-Your-Ground, it simply exists as a legal standard. You do claim self-defense immunity, if you wish.
