I see no reports that KM was declared indigent. A hearing/meeting was held in 2017 regarding who was paying for her legal costs (i.e., were they connected to the Adelsons?). Judge: No connection to Adelsons in suspect's legal fees I see no report or court filings after this in which she was declared indigent.
I have repeatedly asked for a link, which indicates CM was declared indigent And the government paid her lawyer fees. Anyone?

@AlferdPacker -- Thank you. The full docket entry says she was declared indigent "for costs". "ORDER GRANTING Order Granting Motion TO DECLARE DEFENDANT INDIGENT FOR COSTS" . https://cvweb.leonclerk.com/public/...scaseid=1129969&defseq=A&chargeseq=1&secret=1
So the State will pay for certain costs but it doesn't mean the State pays her attorney fees. Costs that the State will cover include expert witnesses, court transcription, a mitigation specialist in case the death penalty etc. https://www.justiceadmin.org/faq/Training Modules/GuidetoIndCost.pdf

Thanks for the post!! There is a huge difference between paying for certain costs and paying attorney fees. I had a difficult time believing that the government paid the expensive fees of her high priced attorneys.

Attorneys especially criminal defense ones in high profile cases famous enough to be repeatedly covered over several years on Dateline, 20/20, not to mention social media etc can find the publicity attending certain cases to be absolutely 100% worth not having their usual fee paid. It’s really a level of publicity that money can’t buy. That publicity has value.

Can’t read article
Leon Circuit Judge James C. Hankinson set an April 13 trial date for Katherine Magbanua, whose charges in the murder of Florida State law professor Dan Markel ended in mistrial earlier this month.

Magbanua, wearing a blue Leon County Detention Center jumpsuit, appeared in the courtroom with her attorneys, Chris DeCoste and Tara Kawass. Hankinson asked about her legal representation moving forward; DeCoste said he and Kawass intend to continue defending her.

Magbanua waived her right to a speedy trial; both her lawyers and prosecutors agreed to the trial date. Pretrial conferences will be held March 17 and April 9.

DeCoste also asked Hankinson to declare Magbanua indigent for attorney compensation purposes.

Did the defense get to hear the jailhouse tapes between SG and KM, or did they have to guess at what was discussed?

If someone can point me to an order granting that request -- NOT an order granting indigence for costs -- but granting indigence for attorney's fees -- I would appreciate it. Thank you!
I just looked at KM’s court docket on the Leon County website and see where she petitioned the court on 2/04/2020 to be declared indigent for costs, but scrolled scrolled and scrolled some more and never saw an order granting it or denying it, or an order petitioning the court to grant attorneys fees but I may have missed it. I’m getting sleepy and glazed over.

You can punch in her name and look at the entire docket here:

.

Scroll down to search court records and click that box and go from there.

IMO - CA hired Markus and Markus hired DeCoste and Kawass. Markus set up this legal web and now he's out of the picture just as planned - the plan all along was to stay on until CA was arrested then hand it off to the new attorney Rashbaum - Markus makes himself once removed and it gives CA's new attorney Rashbaum plausible deniability of the legal shenanigans that brought us here and Markus is long gone. These guys know how to play the game and take it right up to the edge.
The possible attorney collusion gives off Alex Murdaugh vibes!

What about leaving town pre warrant for her arrest is released. What contacts could she have that will let her know if an arrest is imminent? The same people who may have tipped off the defense team prior to the announcement of the verdict? Pure speculation on my part.
If that family decides to go sailing this weekend, I would have the coast guard on alert. They have had plenty of time to arrange to disappear.

KM’s attorney fees for the first trial was paid by a third party unrelated to the Adelsons.

“Last July, Kawass and DeCoste volunteered to tell Leon Circuit Judge James Hankinson that her family was paying the legal fees at a financial hardship. That remains the case, DeCoste said.”

dan wasn't at all orthodox -- he didn't wear a yarmaca, he travelled on shabat if needed, he ate at any restaurant at conferences etc - all he wanted is a relatively kosher home and for the wedding he wanted not to have shrimp and bluntly non kosher food, not because of himself but because his beloved rabbi and the rabbi's family was there - he wanted the guests to feel included
Thank you for explaining!!

As someone who knew the relationship quite well - it is absolutely false to say Dan expected Wendi to worship him - he was a good husband, he posted with pride about her idiotic badly written self-published novel, he got her the clinical position at FSU which is hard to do - usually those positions too go to people with more prestigious legal education...

Thank you FO for your friendly observations, which make me understand DM and his family dynamic better.

This last part resonated for me.
I did the same as DM when asked by a former wife - to help her get an academic position at a university that offered me a job, when there was little or no chance she could get it on her own.
She was delighted to make to move to the new university and to set up her operation. I was delighted to have helped.
Yet, as the years went by she held it against me - as if it was somehow denigrating to her that I had helped her.
Her memory had changed, when in fact there was no chance she could have gotten that job, and she knew it.
She even demanded that we have equal salaries -- ha! so I took a pay cut to make that happen.
If there is a psychologist on the board - they could probably describe it clinically.
To me, she was supremely insecure (and ungrateful).

Well, at least she didn't try to kill me... but there were times...
This is a bad spiral in academia.

I recall the Defense mentioning in court that Wendi's attorney was present in the courtroom.

Mr. John Lauro possesses a fine resume' as an outstanding Defense Trial Attorney who has received many awards including but, not limited to, Mr. John Lauro being recognized as Lawyer of the Year 2022, White-Collar Criminal Defense in Tampa, Florida. His legal conquests and accomplishments are also impressionable.

One of Lauro's clients was pardoned by President Trump in 2021
President Trump Pardons Our Client, Paul Behrens.

I'm sure his legal fees are hefty. Wendi does not work any longer does she? I recall her saying something about C19 preventing her from possessing gainful employment. Her LinkedIn page has been removed. Does WA and the boys still reside with her parents?

I feel this is a very strong possibility.

I think suicide is likely too. He would probably feel like he was "saving" his family. (DA and WA) I can't imagine him settling down for a long sentence. Dental professionals have a high suicide rate all around the world, without facing murder charges.
At risk of sounding really mean, I'm pleased with the idea that DA and WA are quite stressed at the moment. I hope they are jumping at shadows. Justice has been a long time coming for Dan.

That makes more sense. I have a hard time believing that the Adelsons are paying the defense.
I believe or have been told by a US person that covers her court costs only (filing fees and the like ) . It does not cover her legal fees.
If she can't find a lawyer she can personally afford then the court appoints a public defender. Clearly she found one she could afford because someone else seems to be paying.
