oh God, I sit here with tears in my eyes for this beautiful little girl. How can someone be so evil as to (possibly) murder a child and then just throw her away in the trash? :( I am so sick of this. When is it ever going to stop?

When every parent realizes that the world is not safe and constant supervision, GPS monitoring, and constant rechecking of the sex offender registries are good things. When it becomes socially accepted that it is better to scare your child with the realities of life than to have them feel falsely secure in a world full of people that will hurt them.
MOO.

Police have started turning away volunteers at the Orange Park Athletic Association because there have been so many wanting to help find 7-year-old Somer Thompson, who disappeared on her way home from school Monday afternoon.

Also on Wednesday, the Justice Coalition is offering a reward for any information that leads to finding Somer. The group will announce the specific amount of the reward later this afternoon.

The award is funded by Allied Veterans of the World Inc., which is dedicated to helping VA volunteers and medical professionals.

Today, 500 people from NAS Jacksonville joined various law enforcement agencies in the area near Gano and Debarry avenues, where Somer was last seen, to assist in the search.

Missing Child Update: Somer Thompson
Posted: Wednesday, 21 October 2009 9:47AM

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler told "Good Morning America" today that police have interviewed nearly 60 of the 94 registered sex offenders that live within a three-mile radius and plan to expand their "circle of interest" to five miles out. But nearly 48 hours after Somer Thompson was last seen, they are no closer to finding her.

97.3 The Sky has learned that Texas EquuSearch will begin a search for Somer Renee Thompson, age 7, on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. The Command Center will be located at Orange Park Athletic Association, 1086 Fromhart St., Orange Park, FL 32073. The website for the park is www.opaa.us.

Hopefully the landfill search is just because LE is covering all of their bases. We've seen landfills searched in several of these cases, and of the ones who were found, they weren't found in a landfill. Wishful thinking.

"Channel 4 learned that a search was conducted at the Folkston, Ga., landfill where Clay County's garbage is dumped. Clay County officials said the search was routine, not the result of a tip, and nothing related to this case was found."

From this article: http://www.news4jax.com/news/21358653/detail.html

Clay County is where Orange Park is located.

Guess thats what they are thinking, no arrests were made
I think the public deserves a little more info than that! Did the witness misunderstand? How can someone say "Your Mom told me to pick you up get in the car" and that not be an abduction attempt. They must know a lot more than they are telling us.

MOO.

Couldn't agree with you more! I have probably scared the S$%& out of my kids but I think it is better than having them think they can trust everyone.

So they are done searching? Glad her body wasn't found.

My youngest is 7 - born 4-24-02 - so close to Somer's bday. This is so scary. I let my child walk to our neighbor's house but it's only 2 doors down and I watch her. I do let my 12 and 13 year old walk around our neighborhood. Maybe I shouldn't!

It also looks like the community has really stepped up to help.

Hard to believe with such intense and seemingly thorough searching, nothing has been turned up.

The perp probably got her in the car - held her down and drove her out of town quickly. It's possible there is nothing around the area she went missing.

I was just involved in a case with a missing person, Ann Marie Kelley (there is a thread on her here.) Investigators came from NE to WY because they got a tip that someone had seen her at my daughter's apartment. IMO the girl at my kids place looked nothing like Ann, and Ann is most likely dead anyway, but they said they have to investigate EVERY tip that they get. The detective told me that the family was not informed of the tip beforehand so they wouldn't get their hopes up, but they were told after they ruled her out. This case is so high profile though, that we will probably see every tip being followed up on in the news. My heart is breaking for this family, they shouldn't have to go through this, too. Mom's anguish makes me cry. God Bless Somer and keep her safe.

ITA, She could be anywhere at this point, halfway across the US for all we know.

This statement seems important:
"She put her hair in a ponytail with a red bow, Thompson said, and told her to try to make it through the day when Somer complained of not feeling well. Thompson said she could not remember if she told her daughter she loved her."

This is the first time I have seen or heard this. Is it possible, she ran ahead and curled up with a fever somewhere and fell asleep. If she was starting to come down with something and had a fever, that would certainly affect her reasoning abilities, and ability to come home on her own. This actually gives me hope.

Strolling down Horton from Daberry to Bartlett...this is Somers neighborhood.

Here is an explanation of the landfill situation. There are actually two landfills (so that explains the conflicting reports) being searched. One is a temporary stop before the final resting place for the garbage. Why can't all the news agencies get the facts straight? So confusing.

"Mary Justino, a spokeswoman for the Clay County Sheriff's Office, said officials are searching the Rosemary Hill landfill near Green Cove Springs and the Chesser Island Landfill in Folkston, Ga.

Trash from the neighborhood where Somer's family lived is taken to Rosemary Hill, then transferred to the Georgia landfill."
