I heard the first report after they had found a body, by the lead detective say that they always did this as a matter of procedure. I wondered then, why they waited to do the search when the trucks were going to the landfill. Why not search the dumpsters and any other garbage immediately? MOO

IMO it would be easier to search one area where 9 trucks were dumped than 9 nine trucks. I don't know if that's why or not. Plus, wouldn't the garbage in those 9 trucks be from individual garbage cans too? So, they would have to search all dumpsters and garbage cans.

Y'know....
Maybe the cops don't want the public to know the exact process of checking the dumpsters...perhaps it would tip off the perp that they know something>
Or....maybe it could be an important tool for future crimes?

So far, I am impressed with the work that the LE there has done.
I am also impressed with the high level of sleuthing here..
but if there is something they are playing close to the chest on this investigation,
it may be because they feel they need to...?
If they can catch this monster...I say...do whatever it takes!

In my ever so humble opinion....that dumpster was not emptied on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday...it looks like it hasn't been emptied in a while.

Here, Here! :toast:
I too think LE is doing an outstanding job. I'm not faulting them in any way...I'm just trying to put the puzzle together correctly, that all.

I don't know how the garbage system works there.

We have a large plastic can from the city/county sanitation department that is picked up by an arm on a truck and dumped. Then the can is put back at the end of our driveway. (if all goes according to plan).

I think it was much smarter to do truck by truck. Then you know you have garbage from house 1-30 versus (with 9 trucks) 1-270.

And I made up that number (30).

LE has said they didn't feel they had a suspect in the pool or SO that they have interviewed - do you think they could really rule that out that quickly or that is more bait for the perp to feel more comfortable?

I may be wrong, but from what I gather is:
It is standard procedure to search the dump but the timeing was perfect in this case because they were aware that the garbage would be picked up in the area that day.
I think the suggestion to follow the trucks so that the location in the dump would be narrowed down was a little different than standard procedure.

Does that sound right????

To elaborate on this a little I agree with you that what they may have been saying is that checking dumpsters and the dump in a missing persons case is standard procedure. But they were faced with the fact that they hadn't had a chance to check all the dumpsters in the area before they were due to be picked up the next morning. The timing of that trash pick up was not working in their favor. It would have been next to impossible to stop all the trash pick up considering all the contractors that would have had to be contacted so this officer came up with the idea to let the trash be picked up but to isolate it so that they would not be searching through all of the county trash a week or so later after Somer failed to turn up. A very good idea on his part.

Investigators have finished interviewing all the registered sex offenders who live near where a slain Florida girl first vanished but don't believe there is a suspect in that group, authorities said Friday.

Forensic experts continued to comb through a vacant house on the route that 7-year-old Somer Thompson walked home from elementary school before she vanished Monday.

That is a construction dumpster and I believe it has been verified that it wasn't emptied on Tuesday. Construction dumpsters are on a separate contract basis and the company doing the renovations would phone the contractor who owns the dumpster to pick it up when it's full and replace it with an empty one. That one appears to possibly be owned by the company doing the renovations and therefore they would be responsible themselves for taking it to a dump site.

Edited to add...Amason's is a contracted garbage disposal company

Just to clarify ... I meant trash in trucks from regular pickup in front of residences.

I think someone found that the large bin at the vacant house would have been picked up by whoever they had contract with.

And thanks for those photos!

Would the vacant house still have regular trash pickup? (I can't see paying for monthly trash pickup when nobody lived there.)

I mean if they had that huge bin there, wouldn't the workers just toss what trash they generated in there?

I know thanks to momtective's sleuthing the trucks first go to Rosehill, and then onto final destinations. But I really doubt the garbage is taken out of the trucks, put into the landfill, taken out of the landfill and put into new trucks to be sent to GA. RH is probably where they load the garbage onto new trucks.

I'll look up waste management procedure later, but just thinking rationally, it wouldn't make sense for those specially designed garbage trucks that pick up trash off the curbs to travel all the way to the ultimate landfill. Those trucks are covered and smaller to avoid stinking up neighborhoods. If garbage is being transfered hundreds of miles, it has to be in huge freight-type trucks. I know in NY a lot of trash is transfered by tanker boats.

Yes, I believe construction dumpters are not emptied like regular dumpsters. I have a residential dumpster here on the ranch with weekly service, but large commercial dumpsters are handled separately here--and probably there as well.

Posted wrong link.

Time to nap.

Residential garbage must be placed for collection in standard 20-30 gallon cans and may weigh no more than 40 pounds each.

Does this mean the garbage cans are picked up manually and garbage thrown into the truck? I guess that is something a local would have to answer.

Where I'm going with this (have to run out for a bit):

I'm asking because Somer weighed 65 pounds or so. And someone would have had to LIFT that can. And might know by feel if a can was over the limit.

I do not think we are supposed to know how these things work....we are only expected to pay an arm and a leg for the pick-up.lol

Maybe someone here that lives in the Orange Park City limits can confirm this....our trash pick up is paid yearly on our property taxes....I live just outside the city limits...not sure it is the same there or not......

I have also confirmed with someone that works in Orange Park, that they are on city sewage, so no septic tanks...and...that big tank on the corner of Solomon is a propane tank....just thought I would share...

sarasota county is done this way as well.

"Tuesday was trash day in Somer's neighborhood, and it was Detective Bruce Owens' idea to track the garbage trucks to the landfill they use in Folkston, Ga., 48 miles way."

http://www.tri-cityherald.com/916/story/763835.html

It may be different in MO, but in NY you're supposed to put your garbage out the night before trash day because collection starts sometimes as early as 3am on the day of collection. If Tuesday was trash day, the trash would be put out monday night? (Is it different elsewhere?)

I still think that she was taken out of that neighborhood and dumped elsewhere....I have just got to believe with all of LE and volunteers working around the clock on Monday evening, she would have been found if she were in one of the locals trash.....
