Desantis couldn’t really say how long this first phase will last or if personal care stuff would change when asked (sounded like it may change, wishy washy). He did have a good power point presentation, just wish it had more viable information. As he talked about how we didn’t have the kind of deaths like N.Y, IMO he fell pretty flat on the 1,200 plus lives that were lost (that they admit to). He did seem to spend a lot of time on how well he did, in his opinion.

Gov. Ron DeSantis says most of Florida can begin first phase of reopening May 4

Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties will not open on this date due to a higher incidence of COVID-19 infections in the area, DeSantis said.

Here’s what changes and doesn’t change for Florida on May 4:

  • Schools continue distance learning
  • Visits to senior living facilities are prohibited
  • Elective surgeries can resume (not just OP, but in hospitals)
  • Sports arenas and movie theaters will remain closed
  • Restaurants may offer outdoor seating with six feet of space between tables and indoor seating at 25% capacity
  • Retail stores can operate at 25% of indoor capacity
  • No changes for bars, gyms and personal services such as hair dressers and barbers
  • Vulnerable individuals should avoid close contact with people outside the home

During his presentation, DeSantis did not address when Floridians could expect to see theme parks or major attractions reopen or speak to Florida’s troubled unemployment system. The governor took a few questions from reporters before leaving the room.

Florida governor announces plans to reopen state

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a plan Wednesday to lift the state's stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus crisis that he called "safe, smart and step by step."

The plan will go into effect Monday in every county except Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties, where most of the state's COVID-19 cases have been reported, DeSantis said.
Under phase one, retail stores and restaurants can reopen, but only at 25 percent capacity. Eateries will be allowed to seat people outside, but they will have to maintain 6 feet of social distancing. And elective surgical procedures will be allowed to resume.

But schools, bars, gyms, hair salons, nursing home and long-term care facilities will remain closed until further notice.

People should continue avoiding large gatherings of more than 10 people and don masks whenever possible, the governor said.

Coronavirus Florida: DeSantis launches phased-in reopening

DeSantis is recommending that Florida's most vulnerable population, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, remain sheltered in place.

People who do go out should avoid socializing in groups of more than 10 people in places that don't provide appropriate physical distancing, he added.

Bars and gyms would remain closed and DeSantis has said he has no plans to reopen movie theaters right now. On the job, it's likely that DeSantis will encourage employers to continue emphasizing remote working, while using social distancing among the returning workforce.

Outdoor dining at restaurants will be allowed, with 25% indoor capacity also permitted.

The Florida Department of Health reported another 347 coronavirus cases Wednesday, bringing Florida's total to 33,193. Another 47 deaths from the day before brought to 1,218 deaths in the state from the virus.

Florida has conducted 375,300 tests for the virus, with 8.8% of them coming back positive for COVID-19. DeSantis, though, said that statewide positive rate has declined to around 6% in recent days.

While DeSantis has hailed the expansion of testing, Florida public health experts say the state still falls well short of a scientifically recognized goal of testing about 150 people daily for every 100,000 residents – or about 31,800 people each day out of 21.2 million Floridians.

"It's sort of a 'Field of Dreams,' situation," Herrle said. "When we open, will they come? Will you get your customers back, will you get your workforce back?"

Herrle said that customers and employees both want to feel safe entering a business, and that managers know they have to take very visible steps to assure them. Many companies have been drawing on budget reserves to stay afloat for the past month, and now will be needing to enhance cleaning and personal protection equipment along with their usual supplies.

"For 20 million people in Florida, there's going to be nearly 20 million very personal decisions about what to do next," he added

The drive theaters really are a good thing. Bring your own snack, go potty before you arrive, and stay in your car!

Maybe they will make a come back. No...cars just are not comfy any more. We had a big Bonneville wagon. The ultimate drive-in luxury vehicle. We all piled in there, it was like $3 for everyone.

That was such a Friday night hangout when I was in high school. Everyone was there. You would run around to see your friends in different cars.

Sir Governor:
I would of liked to of witnessed some empathy towards the 1000 + we lost and compassion to the families.

Oh..... how about uneployment Sir ? payments catching up to lighten the heavy load on families.

What about all the Mom and Pop business's.

What about the essential front line responders.
What about the hungry children.
What about those that stand in between us and the virus.
What about all the suicides I am seeing because of mental illness during this Covid 19?
What about the addicts, the victims of child abuse, the DV and murders/
What about the elderly who are alone.

Ok back to my corner.
Tag your turn to vent
I will continue to do my part to not spread this death sentence to anyone.
God speed to safety

If he would have tooted his own horn about how many lives they'd saved in nursing homes, or what they'd done to prevent further infection, I wouldn't have minded. Tell me how you jumped on a solution to save our elderly, save our front line workers, fixed the UI backlog, got the farmers food directly to the hungry, added online education specialists to support our teachers, etc.

I really do not understand this at all. This information tells us so much about what is happening in Florida - what is going on here?

Yes, it does say a lot of what is going on...this is the Sunshine state that has Sunshine laws...guess that has all gone out the window. Transparency has certainly been fogged.

I understand that this is a heavily touristed state and having higher death tolls wouldn’t look good for the BIG businesses here that employ so many...but IMO this goes deeper. I found it quite interesting how the gov was invited to the WH and they held a presser touting all the accolades that Florida had this under control, in their opinion. It is especially interesting how no other governor went to the WH.

(I have appreciated your numbers posting btw)
Yes and why is that? In his press conference he was really focusing on the "fear" that the numbers created and going back to the prediction of the worst case scenarios for hospital beds, etc. Almost like, look we are fine here in Florida - it wasn't at all what was predicted and those predictions created unnecessary fear is the way I took it - I really feel like there is one massive cover up going on right now - and will be curious how the medical examiners handle this - as a side note, his press conference has led many people who were staying in (neighbors, co-workers, etc)- now planning to go out every day to lunch, dinner, parties etc (these are people I personally know and there are 6 law firms in our complex and all have worked remotely except us - I'm waiting to see what they do on Monday) -it's like he wants us all to believe everything is ok - but don't get a haircut, pedicure or go to the gym??

Yeah, that doom and gloom fear dialogue sounded like it was scripted for him.

I understand that cooped up feeling in this quarantine, but there is a reason why we are doing it. Sorry to hear all those folks are ready to start running out. Hope they will at least have their face masks on.

BTW, did you hear that starting Monday Costco is requiring all customers to have face masks on.
