Relentless: Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills chases a killer In Putnam County, everybody knows Howard Sills, and Howard Sills knows everybody—except who brutally murdered an elderly couple on Lake Oconee last May. After four decades of always getting his man, has the sheriff met his match? - May 6, 2015 by Joe Kovac Jr.

In the minutes after Russ Dermond’s body was found, Sills sent a deputy to fetch security-camera surveillance footage from a guard shack at the entrance to the neighborhood. The deputy came back with bad news. About a month earlier, a storm had knocked out power, and the security camera, unknown to anyone, had stopped recording. Sills cursed his luck.

On Carolyn Drive, a mile and a half into the subdivision, Sills stopped at a cream stucco four-bedroom house. Two American flags were tacked to the mailbox. The front yard was trimmed in crape myrtles, boxwoods, and pine straw. In the driveway was that day’s edition of USA Today. The previous day’s as well. There, in a shaded cul-de-sac that backs up to the water, was the neighbor who had discovered the death. It had been days since he’d seen or heard from the elderly couple who lived in the house. The neighbor had phoned them several times. Nothing. So he’d gone over to check. The door was unlocked.

they would know, could know, but too many riddles, not enough or wrong info has been given all along in this case via media by whomever is feeding the media, so I'm not believing half of what I see or hear anymore. My question is: How can you know who DIDN'T do it, per one recent article, about all the tips they've gotten, and still not know WHO did it. Have they investigated all those tips or are they considered coo coo and brush them off, as that's how one article sounded?

Also, fell asleep the other night reading the latest novel of SS, didnt' finish, pictured with his spectacles and badass look with cigar, Seems he's become a movie star overnight since the D's murder. It was a GREAT ARTICLE DONT' GET ME WRONG, BUT I was kind of appalled. Next thing they'll be making a movie about SS.

I see narcissism in this whole article about HIM, yes the media wrote it but he let them and posed for that picture. Why has it taken this long to give a little bit more info to the public on the D's case, weve been fed morsels for a year. At first it was just personal to the dermonds per SS, lastly this guy is capable of anything and he's still on the loose per SS. SO is the murderer a serial killer or not? Is he from round here or aint he, is he from NJ or not? He's just talking to be talking, whatever comes out of his mouth people seem to want to worship and it's all been so contradictory or vague

How is SS any better than other Sheriffs or investigators who are NOT from a small town who likely have solved more than this man? but it hasn't been reported, all because maybe their case wasn't a beheading or their percentages were lower, only becuase they would likely have way more cases than SS has ever had.

I think he's enjoying the fame and is a little too narcissistic to ask for help from some guys who had bumped heads with him before.

I liked the article for the tidbits we were fed again, and the story, but not for his fame because a couple was brutally murdered and he hasn't solved it

Excellent comment and food for thought, dancinunderthemoon... I agree; too many riddles.. Mysterious riddles; inexplicable ambiguous, and perplexing speech in an attempt to show transparency. But seems to only raise more questions and piques curiosity..

As you are aware, there has been a book by AJC Reporter Bill Osinski, as well as a movie documenting Sheriff Sills's most high profile investigation and claim to fame.. In that bizarre case, unlike the Dermond murders, Sheriff Sills had to restrain himself from asking the question; 'Why'. Ironically, this case was solved primarily due to a citizen's tip.. Guess, the movie was never picked up but there is a trailer available;

I keep imagining it was Shirley in bed and heard a disturbance. She wandered downstairs and into the garage and saw the perps and poor Russell.

If I were in bed and heard something, I would not have taken the time to get dressed before going to check it out. SS said she was dressed for the day. SS also said that Mr. D appeared to not have been up for long, just started his morning routine of drinking coffee and reading. There is SO much that SS has not divulged, but I am guessing that there was an unfinished cup of coffee or coffee maker on or last thing in the garbage was coffee grounds or K cup..that suggested that. Could stomach contents be detectable after 3 or 4 days?
Mail runs there at 4:30 per an early article. Friday mail picked up, Saturday mail wasn't.
Does USA Today deliver on the weekends? An earlier article said that 2 days' papers were in the driveway. That would be Monday and Tuesday.
I read somewhere recently that SS is thinking an extortion gone wrong..What would be the events that would result in them being where they were found?

I read somewhere recently that SS is thinking an extortion gone wrong..

He actually said a robbery extortion. Basically a "give me all your money or I will kill you" type robbery. Seems odd to use the word "extortion" in that context. I have never heard it used that way before, has anyone else?

He and Shirley had RSVP’d that they’d be at a neighbor’s Kentucky Derby party on Saturday. They never showed. Shirley, who played bridge and was a crossword whiz, had worked a puzzle in that Friday’s USA Today. It was still on the kitchen table. The couple’s Saturday mail was in the mailbox out front. -

Hope that helps! Sometimes I have a hard time believing some of the things I read... especially regarding murder cases.

From your link:
http://www.atlantamagazine.com/grea...-county-sheriff-howard-sills-chases-a-killer/

"On the morning of Tuesday, May 6, 2014, Sills took a different kind of call. It came from a house also at the lake. Someone was dead."
"On Carolyn Drive, a mile and a half into the subdivision, Sills stopped at a cream stucco four-bedroom house. Two American flags were tacked to the mailbox. Well, that was Tuesday, May 6th.The Monday and Tuesday's editions of USA Today were in the driveway.
The article didn't mention in the mailbox, (except it mentioned the mailbox), so maybe they did have a postal carrier, after all? Or maybe not?

I take it from this USA Today link, that the paper is published Monday through Friday, with some exceptions.

"Delivery of the Newspaper
How often is USA TODAY published?
USA TODAY is published Monday through Friday with the exception of the following six holidays:

How will USA TODAY be delivered?
Depending on where you live, you will receive USA TODAY by either carrier delivery (to your home or office in the morning) or via the US Postal Service. Although the majority of USA TODAY subscriptions are delivered either by carrier or same-day mail, some areas may be delivered by the US Postal Service on a delay.
What time should I expect my newspaper to be delivered?
Guaranteed delivery times can vary. For carrier delivered orders, you can generally expect the newspaper delivered to your door by 7:00 am each morning.

For mail delivered orders, the newspaper will arrive with your daily mail. Customers receiving their newspaper by US Mail will experience a delay in delivery on Postal Holidays."

If he believes they aren't local, and they came by car, then they were let in somehow through the "gate".
They were waved in, I suppose, or had a sticker on their, (or a) vehicle, or something of that nature, I take it?

Canaille, imo, SS came to this conclusion due to the conditions of the remains; the decapitation ...

In minutes, the mood inside the lake house swung from wild intensity to who the hell did this?

This, the sheriff told himself, ain’t local talent.

Foxfire, I'm still not sure that I get it, although if I put the comment made in the video along with the "ain't local talent" then I'm guessing he's saying that the killer is not local to the area? What, possibly, makes him think that, if that's the case?

I'm puzzled that a "robbery extortion" would end in a decapitation with absolutely nothing taken. Well, unless you include the head.

Canaille, beheadings in georgia are very rare/an anomaly. Especially in secure gated communities in rural GA, to unexpecting elderly victims, and particularily decapitations where the beheading was done with virtual precision. Imo, during size up, Sheriff Sills, due to observations of the crime scene, came to this and other conclusions based on his four decades of experience in cases that he had investigated, and others that he was familiar with from the past..
The modus operandi/method of operation, the absence of forensics/pristine condition of home, SD missing without a trace, lack of clues as to a motive in the murder/s, all played a part in Sills' initial hypothesis, imo.

"Lock your Doors", was the recomendation SS gave to residents of RP/GW. The FBI BAU2 was requested to assist in the investigation immediately by SS due to SD missing, as well as the bizarre nature of this horrific crime.
SS stated in one article that Mr D's beheading was done with precision. Yet in a recent interview, he stated that the beheading wasn't synonymous with the work of a surgeon.. Imo, this indicates an inhuman soulless psychopathic personality with a very dark past and practice/experience in decapitations..

There are many indicators pointing to well planned and meticulously executed crime by organized offenders, imo.. After researching sexual predators/sexual predators for almost a decade, I have learned to never ever underestimate a psychopath. They are very calculating, creative, and will fool even the most seasoned homicide investigator/s. In this case there are multiple forensic and investigative aware sadistic psychopaths involved, imo. Both in the planning, recon, and the seemingly faultless execution of this crime. I would luv to see the criminal behavioral profile of the likely suspect/s provided Sills by the FBI BAU2..

Imo, this is a subliminal laden comment/leakage by Sheriff Sills; “Could it have come from the water? Yes. Could it have come from the street? Yes. Could it come from outer space? Yes. It’s totally unknown,” Sills said. “This is quite candidly the most frustrating [case] that I’ve ever worked.”

So, what the heck has this killer practiced decapitations on? Animals?

I too would love to read the profile on this creep.

Decapitations aren't that rare. Google it, even in Georgia. Deer hunters decapitate.

No doubt the person was skilled; decapitation isn't for the meek, decapitating with one or two moves isn't for the inexperienced.

Personally I think the sheriff knows far more than we do, and if he says it is not "local" he is likely right.

Re: "This ain't local talent." Remember that SS grew up in Putnam Co back when it was low population and rural, before the lake and the resorts and before the interstate. Everybody knew everybody. He also knows the local bad boys in surrounding counties. He knows what they do looks like. The local perps may knock someone in head if they are surprised breaking into house, but they are not going to cut their **** head off.
I thought it was local to begin with because the perps had a boat and knew how cut a head off, like a hunter cutting the head off a deer of hog. But I think SS would have solved the case by now if it was. I now think that it was a transient worker or workers or someone posing as them. Landscapers, construction workers, building trades, etc. are basically invisible. No one notices them and they would be waved through a gate.

Roger L. Depue was Unit Chief of the Behavioral Analysis Unit. After retiring from the FBI, he founded an elite forensics group; The Academy that consults on high-profile cases..

Quote by Roger L. Depue author of “Between Good and Evil" -

My job has been to try to stop human predators before they kill again, and after studying them so closely over so many years, to me their traits seem clearly recognizable.
Evil is more than a vague notion. It is an entity, and it is manifest on the earth. It has reflexes and intuition, senses vulnerability, and changes its form to adapt to its surroundings. Those who do not believe the Devil walks this earth have not seen the things that I have seen.

Evil is not a discrete entity that springs forth fully formed. It is born in the mind, takes root there as fantasy, and prospers when normal human restraint can no longer contain it. I have seen it devour the personalities of men like Richard Speck, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy, turning them into blank-faced sociopaths who clearly know right from wrong, but choose, time and again, to follow their own base urges, with complete disregard for the terrible human suffering they cause.

I believe that every act of homicide causes a slight unbalancing in the world, and that it diminishes life’s universal equation. In the interest of justice, it is imperative that someone try to right that imbalance. But the task of fighting evil can take a terrible toll on the people who are charged with it. It can cost them their families, their equilibrium, their capacity for joy.

This conclusion has always had me baffled.. If Mr D's head has never been recovered, and according to the Medical Examiner, the cause of death was some type of head trauma. How would investigators know the type of weapon used. If my memory is correct and according to the article below, the weapon that was used to murder Mr D was never recovered.
