Much the same news as earlier, but the Mail have now put up the two pics side by side, showing the * new * fig tree that was not there when Ben vanished.

I realise that this might just be the angle of the photo, but from where I'm looking, that does seem a rather odd place to plant a fig tree. They grow quite tall ( as is evident from the photo ) but it seems to have been planted between the wall of the farmhouse and a couple of olive trees...almost squeezed in, when there are other open spaces nearby.

British police have discovered an area of decomposition that could be the body of the missing toddler Ben Needham.
Officers from South Yorkshire police have sent soil samples from the area to a laboratory in Aberdeen.

They have found other traces of organic decomposition on the site, but they turned out to be the remains of a pet dog that was buried in a shallow grave, and the body of a bat

“There’s another area of decomposition that has not been ruled out and that is what we are working on,” said Detective Inspector Jon Cousins. “There are nutrients in the soil that are consistent with the decomposition of something. The scientists have been unable to determine what it is.”

I've resorted to lurking cos this is absolutely nerve-wracking, poor Kerry, I can't even imagine.

What type of wild animals do they have on Kos? Just wondering if Ben did die there, and was buried. Over the years animals may have dug up and dispersed remains

This isnt going to help !

Investigators searching for missing toddler Ben Needham have stumbled upon a 1,500-year-old burial site in the grounds of the Greek farmhouse where he vanished.

As many as five adults bodies have been uncovered

Police said the graves could date to just after 500AD - when Greece was considered one of the Balkan provinces of the Roman Empire - and they handed the discovery over to local archaeologists.

'It is a historical burial ground and it is not connected in any way to this investigation,' DI Cousins said.

One rescue worker, wearing breathing apparatus, was even seen being lowered into a cesspit near the farmhouse as part of the search.
DI Cousins said he wanted to 'discount' that the unidentified matter may be human waste from the farmhouse.

The cesspit, which is buried underground, is not believed to have existed on the site 25 years ago.

Wolves and Foxes are the ones that come to mind....they do also have bears - but that would tend to be more in the very mountainous regiions.

I think it's perfectly possible for an animal to have dug up the remains ( oh that sounds awful ) and there may be nothing for them to find now

Have followed Ben's case since it happened in the 90s, didn't realise there was a Websleuths thread for him. Hoping the Needhams get some closure on this.

Does anyone know how near the fabric that was of interest is to the decomposed matter they have found? I wondered if they were found near each other.

Oh jesus, a burial ground!! You couldn't make it up.....

There is a phenomenal effort going into this as well as innovative (and expensive) testing. Dino's mate must have told them Ben is buried on that land. I feel nervous too!

Slightly off topic ... I'm reminded on the 1000 year old skeleton that was found entangled in tree roots when a storm in Ireland knocked over the 200 year old tree last year.

Yes greg, I also wondered how far apart the fabric and the decomposed matter were found. What exactly is "decomposed matter"? Not bones, right?

Speaking to reporters on the fourth day of the renewed search, DI Cousins said: “There were some signs of decomposition.

“One area of decomposition has not been ruled out yet and that is what we are working on.”

He added: “There are nutrients in the soil that are consistent with the decomposition of something. The scientists have been unable to determine what it is.

“It is groundbreaking work. We are able to narrow down the decomposed matter to specific animals.

Police searching for missing toddler Ben Needham have been asked to stop digging by the Kos landowner.

The landowner and his lawyer have arrived at the farmland, saying that there are "issues" over police carrying on digging.

A lawyer who was accompanying the landowner this morning left the site after raising concerns, and was "not happy".

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins, who is leading the investigation, is at the scene this morning and has insisted that police officers will fight for their right to dig in the area regardless of the landowner's concerns.

The landowner was speaking to the Daily Mirror's chief reporter Andy Lines when he raised that there may be "issues".

This is not a good development very disappointing.

Looks as though the digging has stopped

Hearing there may be a positive outcome in negotiations between the land owner and British police
