I know this is a no brainer for many but only drink from plastic jugs/containers that never contained any chemicals. There was a terrible incident near me years ago with folks having a huge party at their cottage. They thoroughly cleaned plastic jugs that contained anti freeze prior. They filled them with punch. Many folks became very ill and I believe there was a death or two. The plastic released the absorbed anti freeze into the punch.

I have a daughter in Miami and a daughter in West Palm Beach so it's looking like one of them might get a slap in the face from Dorian. Current predictions say it could become a category 3/4 - ugh.
Live updates: Hurricane Dorian path and latest news - CNN
Dorian is now a Category 1 Hurricane, storm forecast to become a major hurricane

The daughter in West Palm has a house guest flying down tomorrow for a visit. He's supposed to go home Monday. Good luck to him, he wants to experience Florida so he may get the full Monty, lol!
Oh wow, what is your daughter's plans? Staying, leaving ahead of the storm?

JerseyGirl, I just read they are moving The Stones up to Friday night.

And I hope that works out for everyone....

From another Jersey girl, here, I saw The Stones in Philly end of July, and let me tell you no one wants to miss this concert. They were so fabulous.

Philly’s fan song choice was *****, from Sticky Fingers. It fits, luuuuvvve, it’s a *****! I really love that they are playing fan favorites all over the USA. Each city chooses their song...

Oh, have a fabulous time. Because I know you will!

My love, prayers, and good vibes go out to Miami for TRS Friday night, and to all our peeps in Florida in the coming days. We love you PR, the US islands, and all points Florida... ❤️

Eta: ha! Philly’s song got bleeped! I love it.
Great way to spend some time waiting for the storm.

Here are 15 ideas from readers to readers, lightly edited for grammar and clarity:

⇒ “Make copies of your pets licenses/tags and vaccinations. Take a picture of your pet and put everything together in a water proof container. Make sure your pets are wearing their ID tags" — Jennifer Kerrick

⇒ “Solar outdoor lights are the best. Put them on the grass to charge during the day. Bring them in at night, put one in each room and the whole house has light.” — Linda Star-Siegel

⇒ “Save gallon jugs, good supply of water. I hang the empties in my utility room ceiling. Clean your garbage cans. You can either take the wheels off and stack them or fill them with your yard stuff.” — Dale Read

⇒ “Fill bathtubs with water. Do all of your laundry before the storm.” — Nikki Lee

⇒ “Freeze tap water in containers or gallon zip lock bags. It’ll help keep your food cold if you lose power and as it melts, you can drink it. Zip locks work well because you can mold them to fit around things in the freezer.” — Paula Edwards

⇒ “Cook meats and freeze. If they thaw, they are ready to eat, or heating them up won’t use so much gas or charcoal.” — Tina Lemons

⇒ “Boil some eggs, make some healthy muffins, get off the internet/news if you start feeling anxiety.” — Jennifer Smith Solomon

⇒ “A supply of fruit juices that go well with rum is essential. And chocolate.” — Elcilene Moseley

⇒ “If you lose power for an extended period of time, fill the garden hoses with water and leave them in the sun for a warm shower at the end of the day. Don’t tell the rest of the family the trick, though, or you won’t be the one to get the hot water.” — Bonnie Bailey Theise

⇒ “Take photos of the inside and outside of your house, it will help tremendously if you have to make an insurance claim later.” — Catherine Martinez

⇒ “Make sure if you live on a boat like we do, that your lines are doubled and proper length is put out to accommodate the storm surge, secure all hatches, make sure your batteries are charged, and bilge pumps are working. Also, you can fill the boat with fuel for the generator if you have one working.” — Joshua Pettis

⇒ “If you have a dog, dig up a divot of grass where you dog has peed. Put it in a litter box (or cardboard box lined with a garbage bag) with kitty litter indoors, so your dog will have a place to ‘go’ while you are waiting out the storm.” — Perry Mudd Smith

⇒ “You can use pool water to flush your toilet. ... One more thing — please, check on your elderly neighbors and single moms. If they need help, now’s the time. Yard toys, grills, lawn chairs. Be kind.” — Cathy McGurk Riess
Hurricane tips from you, our savvy and brilliant readers
LOL, great ideas. You forgot to say to make sure you buy the rum to go with the fruit juices.

1. Penny trick: This is especially helpful if you evacuate. Freeze a cup of water and then put a penny on top. Stash it in the freezer. If the power goes out long enough for the ice to melt, the penny will be on the bottom, signaling that those frozen goods are spoiled and must be trashed. Upside: Clean freezer!

2. Charge your smartphone with a battery: You need 9-volt batteries, a charging cord, a cigarette-lighter type charger, a spring from a ball-point pen and tape. Get directions from this handy YouTube video at Youtube.com/watch?v=noLW8MmTRRM

4. Make hot water: If the power’s off and there’s no hot water, leave a garden hose filled with water out in the sun. Voila! Be careful, the water is super hot!

5. Freeze zip-seal bags: Fill zip-seal freezer bags from the tap about 3/4 full, seal them well and lay them flat in the freezer. They can then be used to keep food cold if the power goes out and double as drinking water.

6. Royal flush. Use pool water to fill up the toilet tank and flush. No pool? Buy or use a clean 30-gallon garbage can. Set it up on the patio near a door. Don’t worry. It won’t blow away because one gallon weighs 8.34 pounds. Line the can with a heavy-duty garbage bag and fill it up with the hose. Put the lid on.

7. Use the washer as a cooler: Right before the storm hits, fill the washing machine tub with ice and beverages. No mess!

8. Store documents in the dishwasher. Put important papers and treasured photos in plastic bags and store them in the dishwasher for safe keeping.

9. Buy a power inverter: Can’t afford an expensive portable generator? An inverter costs about $30 at home improvement stores. They hook up to the car battery and create AC power. You know, to run the coffee maker.

10. Uh oh, gotta go: If Fido or Fifi is freaked out during the storm or can’t go out because of high winds (don’t do it!), line a kiddie pool with sod to create a place for him to do his business.

11. Let there be light: Use the flashlight on your smartphone or buy battery-operated LED light bars. They last a lot longer than regular flashlights.

Oh wow, what is your daughter's plans? Staying, leaving ahead of the storm?
At the moment she plans to stay home. When Irma hit in 2017 she made her husband take my grandson and drive north to "safety" which kind of backfired when Irma followed them up the state. So this time they're all staying put.

Their house is new and while there's a lot of glass it's all impact glass. My biggest worry is that trees could damage the house itself. I think storm surge flooding would be more of a nuisance than danger as long as they have a supply of drinking water and food. I dunno, my preference is that both daughters and their families hop on a plane and fly out here but I trust that they're prepared for this monster coming at them.

110 mph sustained winds. Storm surge predicted to raise water levels as high as 10 to 15 feet above normal on the coast of the Bahamas. Ugh.
National Hurricane Center

Florida urged to plan for 7 days without power as Hurricane Dorian approaches

The intermediate advisory is out:

SUMMARY OF 200 PM AST...1800 UTC...INFORMATION

ABOUT 625 MI...1005 KM E OF WEST PALM BEACH FLORIDA

PRESENT MOVEMENT...NW OR 310 DEGREES AT 10 MPH...17 KM/H
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...970 MB...28.64 INCHES

Most Florida counties have adequate shelters in case of evacuation but many people will stay home regardless. People along the coast and those in mobile homes are at highest risk while many homes built post Andrew have good quality shutters and impact glass.

Latest track puts Palm Beach in 45% to 55% chance for hurricane force winds - where my oldest daughter lives, ugh. Palm Beach county will open the shelters Sunday morning.

From the Sun-Sentinel, some info/advice for those planning to leave their homes:

* In a press conference in Palm Beach County on Friday afternoon, Gov. Ron DeSantis said that once local evacuation orders are issued, shoulder lanes will be opened up. He added that all shoulder lanes on major highways have already been cleared in preparation.

* The Palm Beach County Emergency Management office said Thursday that evacuations in the county had not been ordered and would depend on storm surge, not wind speeds.

* If evacuations were ordered, Palm Beach County officials did not recommend for residents to flee too far. “If evacuations are ordered, residents should consider evacuating miles, not hundreds of miles," a statement read.

CAT 4 is a real monster. I would not stay. I've experienced many hurricanes over the years. I live on the NC coast. Experienced two major hurricanes in three years. Hurricane Matthew dropped a huge oak tree into my bedroom and it took out the entire back of the house, tree feel all the way to the floor, all patio doors, windows, walls and ceilings, gone. Hurricane Florence put my neighborhood underwater, only the roofs of the homes were showing. These hurricanes were not CAT 3 or 4.
CAT 4 is so extremely dangerous. I know you will be worried sick. Stay in touch.

I've always tracked hurricanes since I was a child. I've lived in Florida, Louisiana and now in NC. The top states that have the most hurricanes are 1. Florida, 2. Texas. 3. Louisiana and 4. North Carolina. I would never stay during another CAT 3 (I've been there, done that) and no way in heck would I ride out a CAT 4.
