Reward for missing Iowa jogger Mollie Tibbetts now more than $277,000, breaking record

The reward for information about missing Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts is now $277,178, breaking a record in that part of the state.

The 20-year-old University of Iowa student disappeared on July 18 after going for a jog, and the search remains in full force.

The reward has been steadily increasing over the past days and weeks, and went up today after the donations from over the weekend were added. All told, 141 donors have contributed, including both businesses and individuals.

Greg Willey, the vice president for public relations for Crimestoppers of Central Iowa, which is coordinating the reward, said that this is the highest in the group's history.<snip>

Mollie Tibbetts video shows her acting ‘totally normal’ the day before she vanished, friend says

A video of Mollie Tibbetts taken the day before she disappeared shows the college student was in good spirits – and that she was her “normal, outgoing, happy self,” Tibbetts' friend tells Fox News.

“She was totally normal that day,” Ritter told Fox News on Wednesday. “All of her actions were the same as they had been previous days. She hadn’t been talking about anyone suspiciously or randomly. She was her normal, outgoing, happy self.”

Reward for missing Iowa student goes up again, which an expert says could help
The reward fund, run through Crimestoppers of Central Iowa, is now $312,997 as of noon on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
About 760 tips about Tibbetts' case have been communicated, either through calls to Crimestoppers or by using their web or app services since the group became involved in the case on July 28, according to Willey.
"A reward helps to draw attention to a case and it helps motivate people to pay attention to it and if they have information, motivate them to share it with law enforcement," Allen said.

Mollie Tibbetts' dad pleads to tech companies to help him find his daughter

Technology now plays a critical role on how a missing person is located, particularly as more and more people are dependent on devices to go about their day. But Tibbets case highlights how those crucial tools also have their limits.

But retrieving that information from social media sites and tech firms is not always easy – the companies are not legally required to do so. Doing so, some believe, undermines the privacy of their users. That has sparked back-and-forth battles between tech firms protective of data and law enforcement officials desperate to solve cases.

“[Mollie] was 20 years old, she lived on those platforms. Everybody knows she was constantly on her phone, and so we really, really need all of that information,” her father told Fox News.

From Oakland to Iowa, Mollie Tibbetts’ family relies on two communities and clings to hope

Mollie Tibbetts was in kindergarten or first grade at Corpus Christi Catholic School in Oakland when her father was robbed at gunpoint in front of their home in the city’s leafy Glenview neighborhood. He wasn’t hurt, and living on the edge of Oakland, Rob Tibbetts chalked it up to big city problems.

But three weeks ago, the day after his daughter went missing from a tiny town of cornfields and grain elevators in America’s heartland, he and his new wife were incredulous as they got off the plane in Iowa from California.

“How does the All-American girl who lives in a Norman Rockwell village and is dating the All-American boy next door disappear from a place like this without a trace?” Mollie’s stepmother, Kacey Auston-Tibbets, asked.

A woman who believed she'd seen Mollie Tibbetts at an eastern Iowa Casey's was mistaken, police say
The call to police came in around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and reported that Tibbetts was seen at the gas station at 680 Lindale Drive. A nearby officer went to the store, watched the surveillance footage and determined that it was not Tibbetts.

"It’s my understanding that she was quite certain she had seen Mollie and called the police department," said Tom Daubs, public information officer for Marion police. "The officer arrived and found it was clearly not Mollie."
