IMPORTANT - Recalled Pet Food

I went to our local specialty cat/dog store today, the place was a zoo. It seems everyone is feeling like we are.

I ended up buying Innova. It doesn't contain wheat gluten, nor by-products, so I hope this will work. The gal there told me that she thinks there is going to be a lot more product recall, although she said this was just her opinion, so who knows.

Everyone in the store was there for the same thing...trying to find food for their pet that won't kill them. I feel so sad for those of you who have lost your pets.

Thank you for that. I was thinking about people like YOU today, and how horrible it is to know others lost their pets and are frantically looking for a solution for those pets you love. I lost my pet days before the news hit - so I didn't have to frantically search for some way to save her. In some ways it was more merciful (to me) than all the stress you have right now not knowing when you feed your pet if you are poisoning them or not. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I had no idea what to feed my dog. So, even though I lost my friend and my special dog - I think we ALL are sufferring in our own ways. (Tearing up now. I'm so sappy.)

My heart just breaks for you. :(

It is awful. I look at their little faces and I wonder if what I am feeding them is good or bad. I also called the breeder where I got my boys and asked her opinion. She's just as frantic as all of us. Prior to the recall, she sent a kitten to someone, and it died. She sent another one, from another litter, and it also died. They did determine the kittens were being fed tainted food. It so sad...just so sad.

We just love our pets so...and when things like this happen, we all grieve for one another. I'm especially saddend by those like yourself, who have lost their beloved dog (or cat).

Just got in and checked my mail...box filling up with FDA listserv alerts.

I am reading on a private e-mail listing from a reputible source, that some companies who produce human foods are admitting they do purchase wheat gluten from the company that supplied the pet food companies. This is what I fear more than anything. Just called dh & told him not to feed the kiddies anything with wheat gluten in it until we know more. I may have to go to the organic grocers before this is over. Boy, this really irks me, I am sure all these companies HATE the fact that this is being exposed to the media...
I cannot believe how some of the pet food companies are dragging their feet - if the human food companies do the same, someone should be arrested.

I keep looking at the site of Petconnection.com for information and updates.
As of April 2nd @ 7:35AM PT .........2,907 pets were reported to this site as deceased.
1,592 Cats........
1,314 Dogs.........( figures forwarded from the Petconnection site)

Is the company still boldly holding on to the 16 pet deaths? ........
Then they think we are all lacking brains.....
This was way late in getting out and its very sad to see the shelves of dog foods go out, then off.........then out.........then off.
I dare not trust my loved companions to people with dollar signs in their gleaming eyes..........:furious:

I think they are all lacking in brains....

Like I said, the breeder at the place where we bought our kitties told me about losing 2 kittens in the same family.

Our local news station went to a local grocery store (a large chain), and found recalled dog food still on the shelves.

So, what's everyone feeding their pets - am I just to make sure the ingredient wheat glutin isn't in what I buy????

OMG :furious:  I'm heartsick for the owners. I don't know how the company can deny the food killed those animals. Healthy animals do not suddenly drop dead. The vet reports alone can verify what killed the animal.

I'm glad I don't feed my dogs any foods on the list. Tonight they're getting raw chicken with yogurt. Miss BooBooBad will be eating regular tuna & fresh fish for a long while. She was eating Iams cat foods on the list. She's not quite a year old, and was sick 2 weeks ago and wouldn't eat, so I left dry food in her dish. Now I know why she wouldn't eat the stuff and I don't have the empty cans to check.

That's what we're doing, poco. I don't know if it's enough. :(

He slowly looks right up at me, his eyes so large and bright.
He wonders why it took so long to get the answers right.
If he could only speak just then, and say the words he felt.......
About a poison in the food ...and in the treats as well.

Why was this such a secret for many long, long, months?
While pets we loved fell ill and died........."we didn't know"....
we choked and cried.
These tiny creatures needing us......while mighty men held ground...to keep the profits up ..they never made a sound......
"The Holidays delayed us, we're sorry now you know. And day by
day were adding more.....now does that please you so?"

Why do we get our wheat from so far away? ...When our wheat fields
are plenty the farmers might just say.

As we walk to the small mound ...high upon a hill......we tell our little loved ones...these questions we'll fullfill.....

For mighty men with silly grins...can't tell us its ok!
As the earthly ground........our arms surround........hold the loved'
pets we burried today.

a reputable company and they also tell you how to prepare your own:
http://www.flintriver.com/

...cook chicken with rice as you would for yourself, but do not add anything such as spices, sauces, or oils. After the chicken is cooked, you must completely remove all bones from the chicken; this is extremely important as bones can splinter and seriously harm your pet's digestive system. Cut the chicken into small pieces, and mix with the rice. Feed this cup for cup as you would the regular food. Portions can be frozen for later use.

Optionally, vegetables such as carrots, celery, yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, or bok choy can be chopped and added, either cooked or uncooked.

Cats sometimes prefer turkey instead of chicken. And they may prefer this meal blended until coarse...

I have used them before and I will definitely from now on. The only reason I didn't stay loyal was because with 8 shepherds, 1 lab, 1 sibe, and a poodle...I seemed to always be out of it. I might need to take a math refresher course so I can figure how much to order.:o

Kitty needs taurine, an important amino acid, in her food. She can't get that from tuna. You can buy it as a supplement.

I'm so mad. This story should be WAY bigger than what it is, considering how many pets have died, also, what company is it in China that contaminated this food?
Why haven't we heard/seen their name in EVERY story about this recall?
Do they export any human food to this country too??

I guess the news is too involved with Anna Nicole Smith's baby daddy or something.

Why is some of the wheat gluten being trans shipped from Holland?
A Netherlands based company named DMS is the largest supplier of melamine in the world. China uses melamine as a fertilizer. There is another potential player here in the U.S.--an unnamed supplier/distributer of the imported wheat gluten.
