Kibbutz Nir Oz announces the death of resident Maya Goren, 56, a kindergarten teacher. Her body is held by Hamas.

Her husband Avner was murdered on October 7. She had been considered a hostage until now. It is not clear from the announcement whether Maya died on October 7 or was killed in captivity.

Maya was setting up the kibbutz kindergarten space early Shabbat morning, October 7, when Hamas terrorists attacked the community.

Maya and Avner had four children, ages 18, 21, 23 and 25. They survived.

'You've been warned': New Israeli evacuation zone map and leaflets raise questions

Yesterday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned Israel that any resumption of military operations in Gaza would need to be very different.

Israel, he said, would need to "clearly and precisely" designate areas where civilians would be out of harm’s way.

This morning, Israeli jets dropped leaflets over areas east and north of the city of Khan Younis.

For the first time, they included a QR code linking to a map of the Gaza Strip, broken down into hundreds of separate blocks with numbers assigned to them.

In a statement, the IDF says the map is designed "to enable the residents of Gaza to orient themselves and understand the instructions, and to evacuate from specific places for their safety if required".

The new approach raises a host of questions.

This morning’s leaflets did not appear to refer to any of the numbered blocks. A message in Arabic merely told residents of four named (but not numbered) areas to "evacuate immediately and go to shelters in Rafah.”

It ended with the words: "You’ve been warned."

A spokesman for the Israeli government has urged civilians in Gaza to use its new evacuation zone map to protect themselves.

[…]

No identified safe routes are included on the map, which breaks down all of Gaza into hundreds of numbered areas, but Levy says the "details are by now familiar to the people of the Gaza Strip".

Kibbutz announces death of elderly hostage

A kibbutz in southern Israel has said one of its elderly residents, who was kidnapped on 7 October, has been killed in Gaza.

In a post on Facebook, the account for Kibbutz Nir Oz says 85-year-old Arye Zalmanovich died in Hamas captivity after being kidnapped on 7 October.

The post paying tribute to the father of two and grandfather to five, describes him as a "man of the earth" who worked in agriculture and with crops for his entire life.

Nir Oz was the site of one of the worst massacres committed by Hamas during the attacks on southern Israel.

Since the End of the Ceasefire earlier this morning and the Resumption of Combat Operations in the Gaza Strip, both Hamas and Hezbollah have begun Rocket Barrages once again against Towns in Southern and Northern Israel.

Let’s put this headline in chronological order: FIRST Hamas “fired a projectile” from Gaza, THEN the truce expired, then Israel resumed the military campaign. The order is 3,1,2.

During the night: Qatari and Egyptian officials did try to extend the ceasefire but at no point Hamas provided Israel with a list of hostages to be released.

"The was no full or partial list given to us", tells me an Israeli official

This morning at the @COP28_UAE Conference I met dozens of leaders from around the world. I spoke with them about how Hamas blatantly violates the ceasefire agreements, and repeated again and again the demand to place the release of the hostages at the very top of the international community’s agenda, alongside respect for the right of the State of Israel to defend itself.

Aisha (17) and Bilal Ziyadne (18) reunited with their families.

Welcome home

Not that my opinion matters but I cannot support that. Civilians are always affected in times of war, but to this extent? No, it’s not OK.

I understand everyone’s feelings, and these feelings (not that my opinion matters either lol), it is beyond brutal and innocents have and are suffering so much. And are likely to continue suffering further at escalated levels now that Hamas violated the truce.

And next time maybe terror groups will think twice about attacking Israel again. Or not. Whatever the case, Israel is going to wipe them out, has chosen to eliminate the future threat to their country after they were slaughtered in a modern-day Holocaust, and it sucks (understatement) for the innocents caught in the crossfire that Hamas put them in.

Rockets fired from Gaza toward Israel

If Hamas wants to keep giving us back hostages instead of VIOLATING A PAUSE AND WAGING WAR, we could all have a Shabbat Shalom.

The denial of Hamas’ October 7 atrocities is now even worse than Holocaust denial. At least in 1945 nobody claimed (AFAIK) that the Jews actually enjoyed abuse, like internet nutjobs now try to paint Hamas captivity as one big summer camp.

The Guardian’s diplomatic editor Patrick Wintour has reported on the schism between Israel and its key backer the USA.

Joe Biden has hitched his wagon to a horse he apparently does not control. According to a Channel 12 leak of Israeli cabinet meeting with Blinken, US and Israel disagreed about modus operandi, political timelines and ultimate objectives.

Blinken: “You can’t operate in southern Gaza in the way you did in the north. There are two million Palestinians there. You need to evacuate fewer people from their homes, be more accurate in the attacks, not hit UN facilities, and ensure that there are enough protected areas [for civilians]. And if not? Then not to attack where there is a civilian population. What is your system of operation?”

IDF chief Herzi Halevi: “We follow a number of principles — proportionality, distinction, and the laws of war. There were instances where we attacked on the basis of those principles, and instances where we decided not to attack, because we waited for a better opportunity”.

Defence minister Yoav Gallant: “The entire Israeli society is united behind the goal of dismantling Hamas, even if it takes months”.

Blinken: “I don’t think you have the credit for that.”

Blinken also reportedly pressed the cabinet over Israel’s plans for a post-war Gaza.
Blinken: “You don’t want the Palestinian Authority on the day after. We understand that. The best way to kill an idea is to bring a better idea. The other states in the region need to know what you are planning”.

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “As long as I’m sitting in this chair, the Palestinian Authority, which supports, educates and finances terror, will not rule Gaza on the day after Hamas.”

Kibbutz Nir Oz announces that Ronen Engel, 54, previously thought to be a hostage in Gaza following the October 7 attack, is dead.

Engel’s family were released from captivity on Monday: wife Karina Engel-Bart, 51, and daughters Mika, 18, and Yuval, 11.

The kibbutz does not say when he is thought to have died. His body is believed held by Hamas in Gaza.

It says Engel was a volunteer in Magen David Adom and loved motorcycles.

“May his memory be a blessing,” it says.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but zoom on the image. There are areas where the numbers completely overlap each other and are completely indecipherable.

IDF says it carried out 200 airstrikes throughout Gaza since Hamas ceasefire violation

The IDF says that since 7 a.m., following Hamas’s violation of the ceasefire, it has carried out airstrikes against some 200 targets across the Gaza Strip.

Several of the strikes took place in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis and Rafah.

Some of the strikes in northern Gaza were directed by forces of the 162nd, 36th, and 252nd divisions.

The IDF says ground troops meanwhile demolished structures that were booby-trapped with explosives, tunnel shafts, rocket launch sites, and other infrastructure belonging to Hamas.

Navy missile boats, tanks and artillery also carried out strikes in Gaza today, it adds.

Iranian-Backed Militias in Iraq and Syria had stated previously that they would Escalate their Attacks on U.S. Forces in the Region if Combat Operations by Israel against Hamas had Resumed; now that the Ceasefire has Ended, we should expect for a Significant Increase in those Attacks over the next 24-48 Hours.

And in the end only dust remained.

The IDF ordered civilians in Khan Yunis, the city where Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is believed to be hiding, to evacuate on Friday morning as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ended, warning "the city of Khan Yunis is a dangerous combat zone," according to Palestinian reports.
