IDF says it launched raids “along the contact line” with Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out raids “along the contact line” with Gaza overnight to “kill terrorist squads," a spokesperson said, as it ramps up its bombardment on the Palestinian enclave ahead of an anticipated ground assault.

“Armored and infantry raids were conducted during the night. These raids are raids that kill terrorist squads, preparing for our next phase of the war," Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said on Monday.

The "deep raids" were also to locate and search for people taken hostage during Hamas' large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, Hagari added, ahead of "the coming stages of the war."

Israel says it has made the first operational use of "Steel Sting" mortar bombs

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Sunday it has made the first operational use of the "Steel Sting" mortar bomb in its ongoing fight with Hamas.

What is it: The Steel Sting is a mortar bomb (PGM) with dual guidance that enables precise hitting of targets in a built-up area while increasing the lethality of the hit and reducing the risk of hitting non-involved people, the IDF statement said.

More than 10 first and fatal bombs were fired in the territory surrounding Gaza and in the northern sector, the IDF statement added.

"We used it for the first time at the beginning of the war," a captain in the Magellan commando unit said, according to the IDF statement. "It allows us to neutralize threats with greater precision than other types of bombs. We don't shoot and hope to hit — we know we removed the threat."

Dear @DjokerNole, This young Israeli boy called Ohad is a big fan of yours. He has a deep love for sports and plays tennis a few times a week. Unfortunately, not any more. He was kidnaped by #HamasTerrorists on October 7th. Today is his 9th birthday, and he’s probably alone in some dark room in Gaza. Please send him a birthday wish and support the unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, including more than 30 babies and kids!

US does not know the condition of Americans believed held hostage by Hamas, official says

The US still does not know the condition of the Americans believed to be held hostage by Hamas, a US official told CNN Monday.

The presumption is still that these Americans are being held in separate locations, the official said. Israel has previously told the United States government that some Americans held hostage by Hamas are known to be alive, a different US official told CNN last week.

The number of Americans who are unaccounted for remains at 10, which is the same number Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday.

Two Americans were released by Hamas on Friday.

Lebanon does not want war with Israel, Lebanese Minister of Information tells Russian state media

The Lebanese government does not want a war with Israel, Lebanese Acting Minister of Information Ziad Makari said in an interview with the Russian state media RIA Novosti on Monday.

"The Lebanese government does not want war. If, God forbid, this happens, we will work with it," said Makari, as quoted by RIA.

According to RIA, Makari added that such "threats" from Israel have become a "constant occurrence."

"Israel has never refrained from making threats, and almost every week one or another Israeli political or military official threatens Lebanon and promises to return the country 'to the stone age' and so on. Netanyahu's threats have become a constant occurrence for Israel," said Makari.

More context: While the focus of Israel's fighting has been in Gaza, there has been a recent increase in crossfire between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Islamist movement which has its main base near the Israel-Lebanon border, raising concerns about a possible wider war.

An underground labyrinth: challenges await troops in Hamas tunnels

A possible ground offensive or hostage rescue in Gaza will present unique challenges because of Hamas’ extensive underground warren of tunnels.

Military experts warn that the system could be a soldier’s nightmare and caution against sending personnel inside the stuffy, narrow passages, which are low on oxygen but full of twists and turns. Many of the high-tech advantages Israel enjoys above ground disappear when soldiers go underground.

Regular night vision goggles don’t work, communication among the IDF tunnel combatants is highly limited, and soldiers must bring their own oxygen supplies, respirators and chemical protective masks.

“It’s like being underwater,” said retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Mark Schwartz, who ran U.S. security coordination in Israel and the Palestinian Authority from 2019 through 2021.

The lengthy complication pieced together material recorded by Hamas gunmen on bodycams and smartphones, as well as smartphone and dashcam footage of their victims.

Journalists who attended the screening said many viewers began crying when presented with the footage, which included clear recordings of civilians being shot, stabbed, tortured and burned.

Their corpses were arranged for all to see - bound, gagged and riddled with bullet holes and knife wounds.

In one clip, a Hamas terrorist throws a grenade at a father and his son. The blast kills the father, who pitches forward into the turf, while the young boy is covered in his blood.

The child is dragged inside and forced to sit next to his brother, whose eye is a bloody mess after being subjected to horrific torture.

One of the boys sobs: 'Why am I alive?' as the ruthless terrorists stand over the body of his father.

Another dark chunk of footage showed how unsuspecting IDF soldiers were beheaded with their headless corpses left splayed in the streets, while a contingent of female soldiers were incapacitated by a grenade before being shot at near point blank range.

The journalists also shared they witnessed scenes of sheer panic, terror and devastation at the Nova music festival, where more than 250 civilians were slaughtered.

“What level of DEFCON is the US currently at?

As of January 2023, the current DEFCON level is estimated to be at 3 due to the Russian conflict, according to OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) on the website DefconLevel.com.”

DEFCON Levels - Military.com

Thanks. I heard of Defcon, but honestly didn't know what it was. Because there are other similar types of words that float around and there's always TMI to absorb.
Cool. Didn't know it an Open Source Info thing and didn't know how new it was!!

We started in 2013 as an Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) based alerts website, but then expanded into providing more detailed alerts and news to the public after that. We implemented the U.S. military based regional combatant command system from there so that news and alerts could be categorized by appropriate world regions and easier for readers to browse and understand.
