U.S. officials hold their breath for Iranian cyberattacks

“The cyber targeting of American interests and critical infrastructure that we already see conducted by Iran and non-state actors alike we can expect to get worse if the conflict expands, as will the threat of kinetic attacks,” FBI Director Christopher Wray testified to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Tuesday.

Multiple U.S. federal agencies have stressed that they have yet to see any intelligence suggesting that Iran is planning an imminent attack on U.S. critical infrastructure. But they’re on heightened alert and hoping that new defenses they created after Russia invaded Ukraine — which brought worries about cyberattacks in the U.S. to the fore — will be able to adapt and grow to accommodate threats on multiple fronts.

I think so much of it too is how people frame it in their minds … for instance, the media frames the strike on the refugee camp as though Israel purposely targeted a refugee camp when that isn’t what happened. Israel was targeting the cowardly Hamas fighters who tried to protect themselves by hiding under its most vulnerable civilians. The headline never reads “Hamas cowers behind civilians during Israeli air strike” even though that is what’s happening. I think the framing of these strikes causes many people to see Hamas as a resistance force instead of for what it is, a death cult. Civilian deaths mean nothing to Hamas and in fact, are good for them because these civilian “martyrs” then help them win the propaganda war. It’s sickening.
I don’t exactly think this is a fair way to frame it either. I don’t see how there is any reasonable justification for targeting there knowing it’s full of innocent civilians.

If there was a murderer on the loose and they decided to hide amongst a school, would you be fine with the police going down and gunning everyone to ensure they get the guy?

I feel like there’s something about this happening on a large scale that makes people forget that the people dying are innocent men, women and children who have families who love them.

Report: Biden indicated to Netanyahu he believes his days in office are numbered

US President Joe Biden and his aides reportedly believe that Benjamin Netanyahu’s days as Israel’s prime minister are numbered in the fallout of the war in Gaza.

Biden has even conveyed this sentiment to the prime minister, suggesting to Netanyahu during the president’s wartime visit to Israel last month that the premier think about lessons he’d want to relay to his successor, Politico reports, citing two senior administration officials.

A third US official says that the expectation within the administration is that Netanyahu would only be able to remain in power for a few more months or until the early phase of Israel’s ground incursion into Gaza ends. However, all officials acknowledged the volatility of Israeli politics, which serves as a caveat to their speculations.

Biden thanks Israel, Egypt, Qatar for facilitating exit of foreigners from Gaza

“I personally spent a lot of time speaking with Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel and President Sissi of Egypt and others, to make sure that we could open this access for people to get out,” Biden says during a visit to Northfield, Minnesota. “I want to thank our partners, in particular Qatar, who worked so closely with us to support negotiations to facilitate the departure of these citizens.”

Biden said more work needs to be done to “significantly step up the flow of critical humanitarian assistance into Gaza.” He reiterates that he backs Israel’s right to defend itself “in a manner that is consistent with international humanitarian law.”

But he also acknowledges the suffering endured by Palestinians during the Israeli operations: “We’ve all seen the devastating images from Gaza,” Biden noted. “Palestinian children crying out for lost parents… writing on their hands and legs to be identified if the worst happens.”

Yemen’s Houthi rebels claim to launch major drone attack on Israel

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claim to have launched a drone attack towards Israel, the latest in a spate of such attempts since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

“The Yemeni armed forces launched a large batch of drones during the past hours at several targets… in occupied Palestine, and they reached their goals,” says a Houthi military statement. “The Yemeni armed forces will continue to carry out their military operations in support” of the Palestinian people, the statement adds.

White House calls comments by Hamas official about annihilating Israel ‘chilling’

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby condemns the “chilling comments” made by senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad, who hailed the October 7 massacre and declared that, if given the chance, his terror group would carry out similar assaults in the future until Israel is annihilated.

“That’s what’s Israel faces,” Kirby tells reporters after Air Force One landed in Minneapolis.

White House says prospects of Netanyahu remaining in office not under discussion

The White House denies a Politico report according to which US President Joe Biden and his aides believe Benjamin Netanyahu’s days as Israel’s prime minister are numbered — and the American leader has told him as much.

“This description is false. This topic has not been discussed by the president and is not being discussed. Our focus is on the immediate crisis,” National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson says.

A Letter You Simply Must Read: I interviewed @gershonbaskin. For the past 45 years, he's been a known Israeli peace activist. You can say that he is the only Israeli who has been keeping direct contact with some of the leaders of Hamas, even after the events of 7.10.

In 2006, Baskin used his close relationship with the Hamas leadership, particularly with its international spokesperson, Ghazi Hamad, to help with the negotiations that led to the deal exchanging abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners. Baskin and Hamad kept in touch; The last time they spoke was a few days ago.

Tonight, after seeing yet another interview of Hamad in which he threatened Israel with "a million 7.10", Baskin wrote him this powerful letter you simply must read:

SBM

Of course this would be dreadful. NOBODY would want to kill all the children and teachers in a school in order to capture a murderer. Such overkill, so many innocent deaths.

But let’s adjust this scenario so it more closely resembles the actual predicament in which Israel finds itself. The actual appalling calculus that Israel has to act upon in real time.

So, let’s hypothesize something more accurate…say there are 1,000 murderers embedded in the classrooms, amongst the children, the teachers and the rest of the staff. NO ONE attempting to capture all those murderers wishes to hurt any of the innocent people.

Now, let’s imagine further that those teachers and staff, as well as the principal, were warned for weeks that the police were going to destroy the murderers, because they have vowed to kill again if they are allowed to escape.
Instead of removing themselves and the children to safety, let’s say the teachers actually cheered and rejoiced when the murderers were killing others, and they absolutely refused to leave the school in order to rescue the children.

Let’s say we know with certainty the murderers have every intent of repeating their heinous acts the moment they are freed, once LE retreats.

What should be done?

It’s a very damning choice, either way, but it’s not the fault of the police who are trying to ultimately save the maximum number of innocent lives.
