Fairfax (while not as big as NYC) is a "big" city compared to Charlottesville.

Fairfax is SO not comparable to NYC, Not even by a long shot! Not in size, layout, subway system, culture.... And it differs more strongly because it would have been so far out of his comfort zone.

Its good to explore all theories...but I cat help but feel this one is really really reaching, and really really stereotyping....its not like he committed every unsolved rape by a large black man, on the eastern sea board over the last 10 years!

I guess we will just agree to disagree.

Police in Orange, Va., are reviewing the missing persons case of Samantha Clarke, 19, who vanished after leaving her Orange County townhouse on Sept. 13, 2010.

"We don't' have any leads or evidence at this point to indicate Mr. Matthew is involved," says Orange Police Chief James Fenwick. "However, we were keeping an eye on it and still are just as part of our due diligence due to the proximity of Charlottesville to Orange, Va."

Police in Newport News are looking for any possible links between Matthew and two women who disappeared while Matthew was attending Christopher Newport University in that area. "At this time, we can't link him by evidence to those missing persons cases," Minkoff says.

They have nothing linking him to either of those cases, which likely means he did not do it. Orange simply says they are keeping an eye on it, not continuing some huge investigation.

Add the foot thing. He was alone on the subway in the wee hours of the morning then in an empty station and might not have seen the guy in the booth. But it's the foot thing. And this guy fled when someone approached.

I still think its a stretch. I lived in NYC for 3 years, and I guess I just feel there is no short supply of this type of criminal who live right in NY (for example: in 2005 a bouncer who could match JLM's build and race offered a drunk bar patron a ride home, she was found dead, rapped, slashed, and wrapped in a blanket, it wasnt his only crime), to think it would be someone who traveled 8 hours north....and that he would happen to be JLM, it just feels too far fetched for me to put much weight on it. Also I have never seen where he has any connection, or has even ever been to NYC, or other the Galveston, traveled outside a 2 hr radius from where he grew up.

And It doesn't surprise me in the least that "fetishes" are something serial rapist would share in common. And foot fetishes...I guess as fetishes go...doesn't seem that unusual.

But of course ruling him in or out in this case, with DNA does no harm.

These creeps with foot-fetishes are more common than you may think. Back in college, we had one who once openly, well, let just say when we noticed, we threw our lunches at him in disgust, to make him leave. Strange thing was through the whole scene, as I recall, he didn't say a word and had this dumb blank look on his face, like he was in an other world or it wasn't happening to him, like none of it got to him. Maybe this is wrong to associate, but it's weird how it resonates with the same reaction this perp may have had as reported when people confronted him about the perp sketches that looked like him. I wonder what that kind or reaction is about? And I keep wondering where he bought his shoes or did he cruise mall shoe store and such?

It may well be a stretch, but definitely worth ruling him in or out - assuming her rape kit has even been processed. I've been looking for a description or sketch but can't find onne.

However, his wanted poster does say he has associates/connections in NY, PD, MD, and DC - so he's definitely at least familiar with large cities as those are/contain they on the East Coast. An insider on the case (Paulap) has stated she knows he did travel, particularly in his early college years and the year or two beyond (which would be 2001-2005ish). He's also notably "missing" from Virginia in 2004-2005 and was in Fairfax for some unknown reason attacking a woman in 2005 - seemingly out of his comfort zone/much bigger than Charlottesville/with plenty of NOVA/DC perps to have done that one.

I'm not arguing with you; I agree it's not highly likely, but it is likely enough. I do believe we (LE) should be looking beyond Virginia's borders for victims, particularly during those 2003-2005 years. How better to commit a crime than to do so where you don't live so you won't be seen again to be recognized?

And, yes, as fetishes go, a foot fetish is probably not that unusual (I know you saw the post on the now derailed thread about Ted Bundy and foot fetishes so I won't repost here, at the moment). But, that seems to have been a JM signature/MO. That was this perp's MO. He was licking the feet of a stranger before he attacked her. What?! Who does that? If he's native to NY and has struck again, how easy is that guy to catch with that MO? "The Foot Licking Rapist."

I'm wondering if JLM spent most of 2004 touring around the surrounding states, looking for another college with a football team that would take him.

He has large and influential family with connections in many cities/states.

How do we know his family is "influential" poverty and influence don't usually go hand in hand, and my impression was that JLM's family was not moneyed.

Yes, but I'm not sure i really understand what that even means? Did he somehow have a rich friend? Some kind of wealthy mentor, that took LJ under his wing? Or is it just to be his family would give him money when he needed it, even when it was a stretch for them....I'm not sure what "type" Paulap may have been referencing when using that term.

This probably belongs in the what-do-we-know thread, but perhaps it was a football associate, whether a player or an owner or a team or a scout of some sort. He seemed to have potential to be going somewhere in football. I wonder who he might have met through his award as Charlottesville Athlete of the Year.

There is one logical possibility of who was 'sponsoring/enabling' Jesse Matthew - the assistant Commonwealth Attorney who is known to have persuaded the attorney to cancel the felony assault charges against JM.

The assistant CA's wife is on the faculty at UVA, and was the sexual offender investigative nurse who CHANGED AND LOST RECORDS of examination of a prominent rape case that would make the University look bad. She is also on the board of Piedmont Historical area, that preserves black historical sites.

Another possibility is the defense attorney, James Camblos who goes way back with the family, so he says. An examination of Camblos' past cases as prosecutor does show a link to JLM's relatives.

JM's family is big and prominent with long history in area, some have had schools named after them. There is reason to believe there was a good reason an uncle accompanied him and his mother to the police station. This visit could have been a statement, a warning and a threat if there is political power involved.

There has to be a reason JLM got off from so many traffic violations, misdemeanors and other offenses.

There also has to be a reason, when after the Harrington case was linked by DNA to the Fairfax Rape, and the black community was asked to submit DNA to try to trace the family lineage of the offender - that NONE of JLM's family evidently volunteered to give their DNA.

If they had, there would have been a ‘hit.’

I still think JM may be responsible, especially for the two Newport News women because of the timing. I think the key phrase is that they do not have any evidence linking JM. The women are still missing and as far as I know they just vanished. . .so really no evidence to go on, kwim?
