"PLAINVILLE - The state's Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments April 7 in the manslaughter case against a local 18-year-old woman who allegedly encouraged a friend to commit suicide."

"The arguments were originally scheduled in May. But Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, said prosecutors filed a motion asking the SJC to expedite the case."

Hopefully the Supreme Court will understand that we will be paying attention and if some would like to not get scrutinized by the public; They will make sure to set a precedent for any future teens that decide to coerce someone to commit suicide while the person has changed their mind for that moment.

The justices made it clear they were struggling with whether Carter's actions met the definition of manslaughter, peppering both side with questions about exactly what she did to encourage or assist Roy's suicide.

Justice Robert Cordy questioned Assistant District Attorney Shoshana Stern about what he called the "$100,000 question" in the case: "When did this cross the line — when did these words cross the line?"

The court gave no indication on when it would rule.

She is guilty because she hid the fact from all while being the one to verbally hound him to do it.

It's one thing to know. But to verbally hound someone to kill is a total different thing. Especially when they confide with you that they really need to stop and reconsider. But one decides to verbally hound the person on. Jmo.

That is conspiring to have a murder committed. Jmo

Agree. This is a premeditated murder. If he had Downs syndrome, would the charges have been different? I think his depression should be seriously considered as a disability. Jmo!

I will be watching this closely!! This could send a very clear message out to teens. They need to be held responsible for their actions and their words. To me, she is guilty of something worse than an extreme case of bullying. She almost took a strange pleasure in his death and in getting sympathy for his death. She needs to be locked up, and other teens need to learn that this behavior is reprehensible!! JMVHO of course!

I will also be monitoring this closely. Will we be able to follow via streaming? Not familiar with MA law.

So glad to have found this thread!!! I'm in the UK and I came across this case when it was being decided if she could be charged or not. I've searched Google several times afterwards to find the outcome but found nothing. Then tonight I thought to look here.

My opinion - she is one unhinged piece of work!!! My blood boiled when I read the messages between them! If that were my son laying in a grave I'd be doing time for getting rid of her!

Michelle Carter(suspect)/Conrad Roy(victim)

An 18-year-old honors student is accused of encouraging her friend to commit suicide.

Michelle Carter of Plainville, Massachusetts is charged with manslaughter for her alleged role in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, who was found dead in his truck from carbon monoxide poisoning in July, 2014, the*Sun Chronicle Reports.

Charges were filed against Carter earlier this month after, cops said, a lengthy investigation revealed she texted with Roy right up to the time of his death.

A police report obtained by the Chronicle said, “Not only did Conrad tell Carter in several of his texts prior to his death that he was scared and didn’t want to leave his family, she continued to encourage him to take his own life, and when he actually started to carry out the act, he got scared again and exited his truck, but instead of telling him to stay out of the truck ... Carter told him to ‘get back in.'"

Carter's Facebook page includes postings indicated she organized a softball tournament last summer to support mental health awareness.

Carter's lawyer, Joseph P. Cataldo, told the Standard*that his client committed no crime and he expects the charge to be dropped.

Carter is free on $2,500 bail,

Time could be running out for Massachusetts prosecutors seeking to put a teenager on trial for encouraging her boyfriend to take his own life (...)

Because she was charged as a youthful offender, she could face up to 20 years in prison, the same sentence an adult would if convicted. But Carter’s lawyer has asked the state’s highest court to either dismiss the manslaughter charge or require prosecutors to try her as a juvenile.

If the Supreme Judicial Court agrees to send the case to juvenile court, prosecutors will have only until Aug. 11 to put her on trial. That’s the day Carter turns 20, when she will age out of the juvenile system.

"Plainville teen accused of encouraging boyfriend to kill himself, to be prosecuted"

"In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Judicial Court approved the prosecution of Carter Friday, according to the Boston Globe.
"We conclude that, on the evidence presented to the grand jury, the verbal conduct at issue was sufficient and, because a conviction of involuntary manslaughter is punishable by imprisonment in state prison and inherently involves the infliction of serious bodily harm, the grand jury properly returned an indictment under the youthful offender statute,'' Justice Robert Cordy wrote for the court"

I'm British and don't understand American laws so in plain speak, does that mean she IS going to be tried for crime that she committed???

What is the min/max sentence if found guilty?
