Yes I think this is part of their ''arsenal'' and it was ready to be implemented in this emergency. It also begs the question for me: "Were they tipped off that this was a bigger issue than what we were all lead to believe from the get go?" (MOO)

I don't doubt for a minute that other governments have this capability as well.

Tipped off ... or not happy for Malaysia to be conducting the investigation. Some countries have always seemed quieter than I expected from them, in allowing Malaysia to conduct the investigation.

I read that there is a meeting this coming week, in Canberra, between Malaysia, China and Australia to further discuss the upcoming search and the costs involved. Could be a bit of a tense meeting with this new revelation.

During the tripartite meeting, Hishammuddin said, the Malaysian delegation would sign a memorandum of understanding between Malaysia and Australia.

“It is important to note that the cabinet appreciates and is thankful for Australia’s contribution in the search efforts for MH370. We are also thankful to the Chinese government for their commitment to the trilateral agreement that has been established.”

It is looking like the search will resume toward the end of September. The survey ships have had to contend with some really bad weather out there during our winter, and cannot survey accurately when being tossed around on waves as high as 13 metres.

"The next phase of the hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet MH370 will be very challenging in places. This is likely to get under way towards the end of September.

It has recorded depths near to 6,000m. Even the shallow regions are more than 1,000m down. But it is the craggy nature of the seabed that will prompt extreme caution to be exercised in the next phase of operations.

"There are areas that are benign and are going to be fairly straightforward. But then there are some areas that we know are going to be really hard work," explained Mr Kennedy.

"There are some huge valleys between big mountains, and it's going to be really hard to tow our device through those areas. We can do it; it's just going to take a bit longer."

The Equator and a second ship, the Fugro Discovery, will use deep-tow instruments. Mr Kennedy likens the deep-tow's capabilities to human senses.

Echosounders are its ears; cameras represent its eyes; and a chemical sensor works like a nose.

This nose will "sniff" for the presence of any jet fuel in the water, down to a few parts per billion in concentration."

MH370 latest: Pilot starved passengers of oxygen; Did he survive?
Believed to have crashed into the southern Indian Ocean far off the west coast of Australia

Ahmad Shah, who allegedly locked his co-pilot out of the cockpit, survived long enough to evade the radar and ‘execute his master plan’ by either repressurising the aircraft or from breathing his own, more extensive air supply, concludes the study.

"Relatives hunt online to solve Malaysia Airlines MH370 mystery"
"...physics student Jimmy Wang had no interest in aviation until March 8, when
Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went missing with his 58-year-old father Wang Lijun on board.
But Wang, 31, now spends evenings combing through aviation blogs for Boeing 777 technical specs, exchanging
what he finds with fellow MH370 next-of-kin."
"The group, with some 300 members and calling itself Voice370, receives and debates advice from aviation, legal and other experts. "
"“It’s really quite a community,” said Sarah Bajc, an American whose partner Philip Wood was on the flight."

I don't think this was ever stated as fact.
We don't have any facts about what happened in the cockpit.
In fact, we don't have a whole lot of anything...

Is it at all possible that ISIS or another jihadist group is behind this? ISIS was under the radar of multiple governments for a very long time and then exploded out of nowhere with astronomical power. Seems as though ISIS is more dangerous than AlQaeda and works hand in hand with them as well as other various militant groups. Maybe taking down or remotely hijacking this plane was a dry run of what could be to come. ISIS is making several million per day from oil fields alone. That could buy alot of intelligence. If a militant group were to do a dry run, I'd think Malaysia would be a safer starting point than elsewhere in the world if wanting to go undetected. Plus, with all of the people that side with the same belief of certain jihadist goals, they'd have unparalleled devotion.

Well, here is someone who thinks that there may be some validity in your suggestion, Jersey Girl.

"This coming Sept. 11 will mark the 13th anniversary of the unforgettable terrorist attacks on the U.S. that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

Ret. Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney suggested that such an attack could happen again with the missing Malaysia Flight MH370 used as a weapon.

While speaking to the news channel, the network military analyst talked about the dangers America is facing in the wake of ISIS, the jihadist group present in the Middle East.

As the former Air Force Lt. Gen addressed the issue of increasing threat from the terrorist group, he suggested that "United States should 'go to DEFCON 1, the highest state of readiness and be prepared'" as the Sept. 11 is soon approaching.

"On the seventh of September, a major news network and publishing network are going to put out a book," Thomas McInerney told the channel.

"It is going to be earth shattering of what's happening and what happened. The fact is we may even see a 9/11/14 MH-370 surface again," he added.

The officer refused to elaborate on the topic but hinted that it is something that is going to be of great significance. He even suggested that Americans should take note of it. He believes that the country is not as safe as it was six years ago."

Details of a new piece of evidence revealed - a satellite phone call from ground staff:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...s-australia-gives-update-on-search?CMP=twt_gu

From this article:

"Malaysia Airlines staff tried to contact the crew of missing flight MH370 by satellite phone after it disappeared from radar, Australian authorities have announced, with details about the failed call now being used to refine the suspected final path of the plane.

Australia’s deputy prime minister, Warren Truss, said analysis of the failed call to the plane, which disappeared on 8 March, “suggests to us that the aircraft might have turned south a little earlier than we had previously expected”.

The airliner disappeared with 239 people aboard after flying far off its original course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Based on a series of satellite signals from its automated systems, it is believed to have gone down in the southern Indian Ocean off Western Australia. The satellite phone call is a new and separate detail.

“After MH370 disappeared from the radar, Malaysia Airlines ground staff sought to make contact using a satellite phone. That was unsuccessful,” Truss said.

“But the detailed research that’s being done now has been able to … trace that phone call and help position the aircraft and the direction it was travelling.”

The minister said investigators still believed MH370 was somewhere on the search zone’s seventh arc, where its flight data communication systems emitted a final satellite “handshake”.

“It remains on the seventh arc – that is, there is a very, very strong view that this aircraft will be resting on the seventh arc,” he said."

So does that mean the call connected to a phone on the plane but it wasn't answered? Where's Mr. Noatak to explain what this means so lay people can comprehend it?

It sure is! :what:

Here is a bit more about it.

Hackers stole classified information from the computers of senior Malaysian officials involved in the hunt for missing flight MH370 and sent it to China ...

Officials at Malaysia's National Security Council and Civil Aviation Department were among the targets ...

The group eventually had the "transmissions blocked and the infected machines shut down ..

"Some of these were related to the MH370 investigation," he added. "It was a very sophisticated attack."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...inese-hackers-target-MH370-investigators.html

This makes me feel that someone did try to hijack the plane. Why else would someone have everything ready to go to get classified info so fast after it happened?

As for it being used against the US or anyone on 9/11; I personally doubt it. I feel it is in the water. I don't think anyone would spend the kind of money they are to search for it unless they had proof it was there. I believe there was military in the water that had it on radar.

Yes; to me it sounds like it connected but no one picked up.

My opinions only, no facts here:

I agree, it sounds like the sat phone connected with a phone on the plane, but no answer was forthcoming. If the connection was with a second sat phone (on the plane), then:

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/02/satphones-syria-and-surveillance

It sounds as if they have developed a way of tracing where the plane was during that unanswered call, by using analysis similar to the analysis used to trace the plane's location from satellite pings.

"Investigators have long been aware of the calls but only recently developed methods to analyse the phone data for hints about the plane's final hours. It was through a similar analysis of satellite data from the plane's jet engine transmitters that investigators were able to define the current search area.

Malaysia Airlines ground staff tried twice to call the crew. The new analysis applies to satellite data from the first call.

The analysis suggested the jet was already flying south when the first phone call was attempted, less than 20 minutes after the plane dropped off military radar."
