Update: #MH370 search shifting.
Aust. says new info indicates plane was traveling faster than previously estimated. :banghead:

Doesn't traveling faster mean using fuel up more quickly, e.g., getting less mpg?

Would that be as it descended into the ocean or airspeed while flying previous to it's descent?

:waitasec:

Ok, I guess it does... from the report

It indicated that the aircraft was travelling faster than previously estimated, resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance the aircraft travelled south into the Indian Ocean.

But how does that coincide with the radar ping locations?

So with this new info and change of search site, are they still looking for the multiple items of debris that were seen by the satellites. They know where they were and must have some idea if they could have moved from the area they now think the plane crashed. Or are they giving up on those.
Maybe they are doing both.

Well, so much for those meticulous calculations (and peer reviews) in the new analysis by UK aviation investigators and satellite company Inmarsat that caused the announcement that flight MH370 had almost certainly crashed into the southern Indian Ocean with all lives lost.

Does not inspire trust and confidence.

OK, so it only looks like they were only 1000kms off and still in the vicinity yes? I mean if it wasn't for Inmarsat we could still be flailing around not having any idea where it was.

I think that the airplane was going faster than they had previously calculated whilst in flight and therefore used its fuel supply quicker. It would have cashed further north than they expected....still in the Southern Ocean but further up. They have sent some planes and ships to the new location but I believe some will continue in the previously indicated possible debris zones.

Yes, that's why they've changed the searh area:

Yes, but what I'm asking is how that goes along with the ping locations they were so sure about... can't be the same ones, but I don't know how accurate they are. Unless I'm having a dumb moment about all this. Guess I need to see a map.

It is "flights overhead" - say it to Siri. I just tested it too and it works. Even brings up a map!

It doesn't work for me either...I had already tried that...maybe an issue with where we are located (in Australia)?

Nope, that doesn't do anything either.

"I didn't find anything for flights overhead"

Well....
Since 1000km is over 621miles , I suppose in the vast ocean we could call those in the general vicinity. :)

Hijacking by one of the passengers was dismissed in my mind when the identities of the two with stolen passports was revealed, and nothing in their background to indicate any knowledge of flying a 777. In addition a review of the passenger manifest, which I presume the FBI went over in depth, also reveled nothing. So that leaves the flight crew or a very serious mechanical/systems malfunction. It could possibly be the transponder and ACARS was turned off by the pilot/co-pilot in trying to correct whatever the problem was, and perhaps changing direction was also to avoid crashing on land.

MOO

But isn't it possible perhaps some other passengers were travelling on fake passports that they don't know about?

IDK. I hope someone is looking at it, hopefully the FBI?

Oh I get you!

Perhaps because the pings were on that arc and not narrowed down to a specific location it still goes along with the previous information?

:banghead::banghead::banghead: is right!

So what about all these hundreds of pieces they've found on satellite???

If those are from the plane, and they were within the search area designated by whosever's calculations, then wouldn't the plane flying at a faster speed mean that the plane would be farther out, and thus those AREN"T the debris??

:scared::scared::scared:

I thought the reason they were down there was due to the objects they spotted on the sattelite images. Are they are just going to throw that in the trash.

Im beginning to think they are taking guesses like the rest of us.

Wouldnt they want to find some satellite images of debris before they go sending all the search vessels to the new spot.

Right, I'm just glad there are people with the brains and expertise to even make educated estimates. If it were me, I'd still be looking for some paper and a pencil. Probably a compass and a map too because I suck at geography.
